1. Great informative programme, I saw it 1st time round a couple of months ago. I worked for Vox around that time in the Hastings factory/ies, made a few visits up to Dartford or Erith, those were the days Cheerz, John
2. Looks good shame about the battery box won't show when you're playing though bargain - congrats! As long as it sounds right Cheerz, John
3. If you're thinking of breaking it I'd be interested in the body 1st dibs? Cheerz, John
4. So you paid £250 for a bass unseen, then moan about it? No it wasn't me selling it but I had it watched on the bay. From the trivial amount of 'work' you describe having to do it, sounds to me like you got let off light! I expect to do at least that to any bass bought secondhand. Just my opinion. Cheerz, John
5.
FWIW, I've just bought a set of 4-string Lakland Joe Osborne flats direct from Lakland, for just over £20 posted. They arrived within 5 days. They're re-branded DR strings, apparently very similar to their Precision flats. They seem very nice, too.
I thought I'd been reading they were GHS strings?
6. Howard put some bits out of his spares stash together into a lovely little custom bridge for me, exactly what I wanted & it looks so much better now than what was on my 51P MiJ. Built & posted practically overnight, service with a smile, great guy to deal with. He's a diamond gent that's for sure. Cheerz, John
7.
PM sent - slot saddles were on the original MIJ '51.
I do have the original bridge complete, but wanted to swap the Hipshot for a Fender upgrade from the 2 saddle type. Thanks for the offer - sorted now - PM returned.
8.
Lightweight, fast-playing, fat-vintage-round tone?
Who are you calling a lightweight?
9. Aha! That sounds like a superb plan! PM coming your way Cheerz, John
10. Not very rock & roll is it? Taking a picture next to an empty laundry bin it should be overflowing The P-bass looks great, just stop poking the fire with the head & it'll be fine ATB, John
11. Many thanks Howard, don't suppose you've got one kicking around somewhere? Ouch! + US$27 shipping Cheerz, John
12. Copied across from the Items Wanted in hope of getting more views & even an answer My MIJ '51P came to me with a Hipshot A-style Chrome bridge fitted, which is fine but lately I'm wanting to fit a more suitable replacement for the original 2 saddle affair. The only bridge I can find with the '7 holes in a line' required is the HMV, which apart from the price is a bit unnecessary. Where can I find the right bridge for the job? Does such a thing exist? Through body stringing, 3 hole fixing, 4 threaded saddles, chrome finish. Cheerz, John SORTED NOW THANKS
13.
Gareth bought a P-bass wiring kit from me, great communications & instant payment, a great buyer & a real pleasure to deal with.
Same again, great guy to deal with. Cheerz, Jon
14.
Ok been searching for ages and have no idea how you do veneers on basses. Bass's like wals which have the maple strip running on the side and also Foderas which have the black accent lines on the side. Also as am here ha ha. Any one have any ideas how also the cut away on Wals and Fodears are doene? Because i really want to learn how to do this and cant work out how they do this?
Hey Jimmy, I have some plenty big sheets of veneer here if you're looking for some to experiment with - send me a PM if you're interested - I'm not far along the road from you - neighbour Cheerz, John
15. What about the usual warning - "DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME FOLKS!"
16. That's a keeper for sure! Good score Hope it gets Howard's nod of approval
17.
Some of us like having a blend pot. It's nice being able to adjust the balance of the two pickups (or to switch from one pickup to the other) in one movement, without having to adjust two pots simultaneously. Can you explain how separate volume pots gives you more control than a volume/blend set-up?
With a blend pot you have a fixed ratio for example 50/50 or 60/40 of each pick up, wherever you are along the resistance range. As you turn the pot one goes up while the other goes down. With individual volumes you have 0 - 100% of each pick up available in any mix you like. Much easier to find the 'sweet spot' of each pick up & use them together or separate as you like. Compare a blend pot to a bass/treble control in one pot, bass one way treble the other, you can't have maximum of each can you?

19. Why bother with the blend? Simple - separate volume pots give you more control, 250K Audio Taper normally.
20. By the way, 'playability' is 95% in the set-up in my experience & if you don't do/or learn to do your own setting up, you're never going to have the best 'playability'
21.
Hey all. Fairly new on here and I have been reading about Japanese Fenders being imported. I'm just after you opinions on whether or not the japanese models have better construction, sounds and playability than the MIM fenders? Cheers
Don't worry about what it says on the label or where they're made - just get & play it - if it feels right, looks right & sounds right to you - then it's all good
22.
That's more to do with my rubbish photography than anything else! I've added a pic of it now. Cheers Mark.
Nicely done sir
23. Just wondering how come it doesn't appear to have the MIJ/CIJ & serial number on the neck heel? Cheerz, John
