1. So it's going to cost you £883ish - how much is the same bass, best price here in UK?
2. Purchase price & carriage + 3.7% then VAT 20% + approx £12 customs - IIRC
3. Mmmmm-miniatures
4. I'm a long time Floyd fan - since the early days - free concerts & all Saw Think Floyd a few years ago in Hastings & Horsham, can't remember how much tickets were but they really impressed me with the quality, sound, lights, effects, ambience - the lot! I'd say it's worth £33, 'cos you ain't ever going to see the real deal now are you?
5. TBH I really liked the track, playing my 51P along with - sounded fine to me, so I'll go #4 P with a pick Good stuff
6. Great JJB interview & some good video but much too short
7. Has nobody got 400squid for a bargain mini rig? Well worth that all day & night IMHO
8.
Wow some interesting wattages quoted there. I practice with a LB 30w valve amp and the BFB Midget-t 112. You are not shaking the foundations but perfectly audible. IMHO practice shouldn't be about volume and also tends to mask a multitude of sins. I like to practice at just over talking levels so you don't need ear protection and have the clarity and definition of all instruments. I tried this with a rock band once and had some interesting results. I got everyone to try it out for one rehearsal, they were so uncomfortable about the clarity and space given that they thought our playing was "wrong". When I repeatedly questioned what this meant they both could'nt articulate anything specific, just that it was wrong. We then turned up to stupid levels, played the same songs as well if not slightly worse than before and they felt so much better. Doing this made me realise how for some people playing is just as much about the 'feel' rather than the 'technical' part of playing. Whilst I am barely better than a beginner, I try to approach making music with both in mind. Having said that, as the DB is much more of a physical instrument, I do tend to 'feel' playing it more than the BGs I have, but the feeling isn't about volume as amplifying them is a real challenge! Do you need loads of watts to play well?
I couldn't agree more Thurbs! I don't think I could even think at the volume levels some people seem to be suggesting by their recommendations for 'practise' gear
9.
G &L? Sandberg? Lakland? Dingwall? Spector? Not heard many Qc related gripes about any of these. Then there's the likes of Status, Vigier, Modulus, Alembic, Sadowsky and so on. Btw, has anyone ever had a naff Yamaha?
If you add the total sales from all of the above together - they probably don't come near 5% of the numbers that Fender have sold, so the law of averages says - there's bound to be a few slip through
10. Good looking K bass, on the surface - bargain? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-guitar-Kay-Guitars-model-K-20B-any-time-mid-60s-through-70s-/190634577920?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2c62b4d000#ht_772wt_934
11. Yes please - love to give them a go! Cheerz, John
12. Do you or a mate have a multimeter? Like Lozz said above - but you can do some checks without taking anything apart - check the bridge is connected to ground. I'd happily have a look at it for you, but it's a long way between us. Cheerz, John
13. Great informative programme, I saw it 1st time round a couple of months ago. I worked for Vox around that time in the Hastings factory/ies, made a few visits up to Dartford or Erith, those were the days Cheerz, John
14. Looks good shame about the battery box won't show when you're playing though bargain - congrats! As long as it sounds right Cheerz, John
15. If you're thinking of breaking it I'd be interested in the body 1st dibs? Cheerz, John
16. So you paid £250 for a bass unseen, then moan about it? No it wasn't me selling it but I had it watched on the bay. From the trivial amount of 'work' you describe having to do it, sounds to me like you got let off light! I expect to do at least that to any bass bought secondhand. Just my opinion. Cheerz, John
17.
FWIW, I've just bought a set of 4-string Lakland Joe Osborne flats direct from Lakland, for just over £20 posted. They arrived within 5 days. They're re-branded DR strings, apparently very similar to their Precision flats. They seem very nice, too.
I thought I'd been reading they were GHS strings?
18. Howard put some bits out of his spares stash together into a lovely little custom bridge for me, exactly what I wanted & it looks so much better now than what was on my 51P MiJ. Built & posted practically overnight, service with a smile, great guy to deal with. He's a diamond gent that's for sure. Cheerz, John
19.
PM sent - slot saddles were on the original MIJ '51.
I do have the original bridge complete, but wanted to swap the Hipshot for a Fender upgrade from the 2 saddle type. Thanks for the offer - sorted now - PM returned.
20.
Lightweight, fast-playing, fat-vintage-round tone?
Who are you calling a lightweight?
21. Aha! That sounds like a superb plan! PM coming your way Cheerz, John
22. Not very rock & roll is it? Taking a picture next to an empty laundry bin it should be overflowing The P-bass looks great, just stop poking the fire with the head & it'll be fine ATB, John
23. Many thanks Howard, don't suppose you've got one kicking around somewhere? Ouch! + US$27 shipping Cheerz, John
24. Copied across from the Items Wanted in hope of getting more views & even an answer My MIJ '51P came to me with a Hipshot A-style Chrome bridge fitted, which is fine but lately I'm wanting to fit a more suitable replacement for the original 2 saddle affair. The only bridge I can find with the '7 holes in a line' required is the HMV, which apart from the price is a bit unnecessary. Where can I find the right bridge for the job? Does such a thing exist? Through body stringing, 3 hole fixing, 4 threaded saddles, chrome finish. Cheerz, John SORTED NOW THANKS
