1. Wishing I could find a serial number on this but there's nothing - nowhere It's all stripped & cleaned, no scribbles on the neck, neck pocket or in the cavities, not even a pencil mark. No good on the pots either, 2 volume are obviously cheap & nasty replacements & the tone which looks old, I thought might just have been original - turns out to be a RS - none of them with any date codes on Nothing on the back of the pick ups, pick guard or bridge. So I guess it's a '73 then same as my old one until proven otherwise Cheerz, John
2.
... and the pickguard is in the post.
Many thanks Dave, you're a diamond geezer
3. Knock on the door when I was in the shower thismorning (don't it always happen) So Kaz went - "there's a huge box here from Blackpool" - that'll be the tower I ordered I quipped! Well it was big & square & had at least 1/2 a tree's worth of paper packed around my latest ebay bargain! It smells a bit! But it's all there, good & bad, pickguard broken which I knew about, no output apart from crackles, which I expected as the ad said 'non working etc', bit of a ding on the back of neck, more of a crack in the varnish really, which wasn't shown in the photo's. The head has cleaned up straight away, what looked like a fag burn just wiped off! The tuners are all good & working, original string trees are fine, nut - good, especially please that all the neck binding is good, undamaged & all in place. Likewise the MOP inlays, all present & correct, with only a couple requiring gluing back in flush. The body is great, hardly any chips or scratches, just a bit of coming apart at the join to sort, but there's hardly a mark on the back & the neck plate + screws chrome is fine. Original pick-ups in excellent condition, plastic cases shiny & pole pieces rust free. I haven't opened it up yet but I think the pots will need replacing, no problems anticipated sorting the wiring out. The bridge is a bit of a tarnished ugly 1/2 Gibson 1/4 Rick & 1/4 cheap/nasty thing so I'll be looking for an upgrade/replacement bridge. So it's just pick guard, bridge, pots & knobs + a set of strings, with a bit of glue & clamping - should be in business soon! Cheerz, John

NBD!

Wow! Shiny Sparkly Flea-y
5. Terry replied yesterday on his return from holiday as advised above, top marks for that. All in price quoted £185 - seems reasonable. Sims website price guide is a bit unclear (to me) but seems more expensive when you add it all together. Cheerz, John
6.
I'm too old to understand this It can't be Guy Pratt. Did you check out the old WEM cabs they are using. That would be back in the late 60's / early 70's. Is he that old based on fact the guy in the photo looks mid 20's maybe. Dave
Check this out http://www.davidgilmour.com/visual4.htm same cabs, same shirt, August 29th 2006
7. C looks like Guy Pratt in his younger days with his lovely old P-bass. So I'll go with him 'cos I like his extensive range of playing style, like his humour & like his P-bass.
8. Sweet Good stuff & a bargain. Cheerz, John
9. All the Switchcraft sockets I've had lately have been really horrible to get a good solder joint onto. The metal used in them, because of the 'springyness' is not a material that solder takes to easily. The surface plating should make it easier but in some cases the only way to get a good joint is to clean the area with a file or emery paper & use a good flux. Even this doesn't guarantee a good joint, especially with 'modern solders' & you will need a decent soldering iron. Give me a shout if you have problems with it. Cheerz, John
10. That Jaffa Tape ^^^ is superb, I sealed up a cardboard bass box with it for courier t'other day, it's at least a thousand times stronger than 'parcel tape' & it looks good cool Well done Fumps
11. Have a look at the pots, they're date coded & if original give a good clue, or even markings on the heel of the neck.
12. When I first met my Kaz I only had 1 bass, a electro acoustic & a Peavey practise amp, which stood in the spare room, rarely touched. She encouraged me to take it up again so I'm eternally grateful for that & her brother in law plays guitar so we occasionally get together. She loves me playing even if it sends her to sleep sometimes, takes an interest in my gear, I had to name my '57 White Blonde after her, (for obvious reasons), + it's a quality bit of kit She appreciates sound quality like no other woman I've ever known & always knows if I'm playing something that doesn't sound right, she can even tell the difference between basses from another room! All I have to put up with is the odd - "If you didn't buy so many basses we could have a new fence out the front! But that fence has been there for nearly fourty years I say - surely it will last a bit longer? Love her to bits
13.
. . . . Has the G/F come back, and what was the reaction like? . . .
Yes she's home on schedule now & after a brief rundown of the circumstances - - - Yes I've got away with it based on the fact it was the least expensive bass I've ever bought (I think) Yes she's a diamond & excited to see what it's like when it turns up Cheerz, John
14.
Tell me more about the Orange 2 x 18...
It was Mahusive, only just fitted in the back of my Austin A40 Countryman On stage the 1x Hiwatt 100 wasn't quite enough so I soon got another, slaved together it was pure trouser flapping awesome Just a bit heavy IIRC. I've not seen another, don't think they made many of 'em but it was definitely Orange, which was different in those days. Cheerz, john
15. Here's a couple of pictures, plenty of work to do
16.
I had a Gherson jazz a few years ago. Really slim neck which i couldn't get on with, but the pickups were amazing. Weighed quite a bit as well!!
Yeah I don't think my fingers are going to be very happy with, I'm nearly 40 years older, a lot fatter & slower + very used to my C necked P's
17.
Good luck! Sounds like you've got a good one there mate. I have to admit that my wife is also very understanding, especially when I tell her it's an investment, just like some people by pictures, I buy basses!
Yeah I used that excuse last time but I got away with that, I bought a AV '62 but sold 2 Mex's, so according to my maths - I've got room for this one? Yes she's a good one alright - a 100% 19 carat diamond
18. She's home tomorrow, just a short visit to see her Mum on her 80th. So she'll be home before the bass gets here Luckily she's very understanding usually
19.
Good man! Can't wait to see the pics. But what happened to the Duck Project?
Duck project moved onto back burner for now that's a serious project, this is for the memories
20. The g/f goes away for a couple of days & what happens - I've only gone & bought another bass! I blame ebay 100% I couldn't resist, seen a few come & go in the past but this one looked quite tidy a bit of work required but it'll keep me busy for a while. It's a Gherson Jazz, as close as I can remember to the one & only bass I had & gigged with for several years mid 70s, so lots of nostalgia. In '73 I went to that London specifically to buy a Rick, had saved £400 but every one I tried had a action a mile high & felt rough to play. I came home that day with a Gherson Blonde Jazz, Hiwatt 100 & Orange 2x18 cab, no I din't get it all for £400, I had a piece of plastic called Barclaycard as well! I can't seem to grab pictures from ebay on my laptop for some reason so I'll get some pics up as soon as. Cheerz, John
21. Great very pleased for you the op went well, good luck on Saturday & can't wait to see the photo's Cheerz, John
22. Good find, fascinating photo's, can't believe I was 6 in '57 Cheerz, John
23. Cheerz JT, another name I've heard mentioned often, didn't realise they were so relatively close, Ill give them a try.
