1.
bump - need to shift this lot as its taking up space
Then why don't you answer questions that were asked 3 days ago? It might help you shift some
2. That's a big thumbs up from me well done
3. No idea what washburn pups are like but just so happens I've today measured my Gherson Jazz pups & they're 7.7K neck / 7.37K bridge. Mind you they're probably 38 years old Yours could be totally different spec.
4.
Right now.John, the pickups are disconnected completely from the electrics,in fact the neck pickup is completely out of the bass, and on the workbench.Reading is 1.--- as with probes apart. Mark I have already tried the 'tap test' and the neck p/up was giving a very weak reaction compared to the same test applied to the bridge one, also,in use,the neck p/up was not giving the true output that a neck p/up should, in comparison to the the bridge. You're probably right, they're probably passive.(Shows how much I know).I'm presuming then that the neck p/up is u/s,and needs replacing. What does the team think? Thanks.
Well it sounds like a break in the windings then, I don't know how it was giving any output though! I don't know if it's worth asking about a rewind, or is a straight forward replacement easiest?
5. Bit of both really, in truth I suppose none of the inlays are perfect, but it's a 38 year old neck I'll see how it goes. Cheerz
6. Yes but no but - there looks to be quite a bit of gap filling required - under the one I've lifted so far anyway Cheerz
7. There's a couple of 'raised inlays on my J neck, I've carefully lifted one out & it looks like the stuff from a hot glue gun that was holding it in. What's recommended for the job please? Cheerz, John
8. Is that with the pick up wires still connected to the pots/rest of circuit or are they disconnected from everything? edit: When you say no reading at all is that 0.000 (or close) as in meter probes shorted together or a 1.----- as with probes apart?
9.
I've just tested the pickups on my Washburn XB600 as the neck p/up seemed much weaker than the bridge.Readings from my multi meter are thus: Bridge p/up - 16.2.Neck p/up - No reading at all.My questions: Is the zero reading a sign that the p/up is duff?If so,how can it give me an output through my amp?And secondly,is the 16.2 (not sure what the units are.Kohms?) reading normal for what I believe are Active P/ups?Many thanks.
Where exactly or to what are you connecting the meter? I don't know Washburns but 16.2 K sounds pretty high. Cheerz, John
10.
The Spector probably has a stereo socket (like most active basses) as this acts as the switch for the active circuitry when the lead is plugged in.
Well - yes I could have worded it better - the Squire will be as above, I don't know about the Spector but if it's active then a stereo version as suggested will do. Cheerz, John
11. Arrrrrr! a real pirates bass bit different to the norm. Good luck with the sale Gary but most of all best wishes to your daughter, I hope she's feeling better soon. Cheerz, John
12. Wish I was closer, I'd be pleased to help but - too far away. If your Spector is the same as the Fender you'll want Switchcraft mono jack sockets like these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Switchcraft-USA-Jack-Socket-/270828275797?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item3f0e9f8855#ht_788wt_952 but please be warned - they are not easy to solder to. PM me for any more info/help if you like. Cheerz, John
13. Hi, If this bridge is still for sale, can you let me know the overall dimensions please & if possible send me a bigger picture, I can't get it any bigger than this I'd like to see the fixing hole centres too - it's not for a Fender Cheerz, John
14.
I fancy a respray, does that price include stripping a poly finish?
I couldn't tell you - send him a mail
15. Wishing I could find a serial number on this but there's nothing - nowhere It's all stripped & cleaned, no scribbles on the neck, neck pocket or in the cavities, not even a pencil mark. No good on the pots either, 2 volume are obviously cheap & nasty replacements & the tone which looks old, I thought might just have been original - turns out to be a RS - none of them with any date codes on Nothing on the back of the pick ups, pick guard or bridge. So I guess it's a '73 then same as my old one until proven otherwise Cheerz, John
16.
... and the pickguard is in the post.
Many thanks Dave, you're a diamond geezer
17. Knock on the door when I was in the shower thismorning (don't it always happen) So Kaz went - "there's a huge box here from Blackpool" - that'll be the tower I ordered I quipped! Well it was big & square & had at least 1/2 a tree's worth of paper packed around my latest ebay bargain! It smells a bit! But it's all there, good & bad, pickguard broken which I knew about, no output apart from crackles, which I expected as the ad said 'non working etc', bit of a ding on the back of neck, more of a crack in the varnish really, which wasn't shown in the photo's. The head has cleaned up straight away, what looked like a fag burn just wiped off! The tuners are all good & working, original string trees are fine, nut - good, especially please that all the neck binding is good, undamaged & all in place. Likewise the MOP inlays, all present & correct, with only a couple requiring gluing back in flush. The body is great, hardly any chips or scratches, just a bit of coming apart at the join to sort, but there's hardly a mark on the back & the neck plate + screws chrome is fine. Original pick-ups in excellent condition, plastic cases shiny & pole pieces rust free. I haven't opened it up yet but I think the pots will need replacing, no problems anticipated sorting the wiring out. The bridge is a bit of a tarnished ugly 1/2 Gibson 1/4 Rick & 1/4 cheap/nasty thing so I'll be looking for an upgrade/replacement bridge. So it's just pick guard, bridge, pots & knobs + a set of strings, with a bit of glue & clamping - should be in business soon! Cheerz, John

NBD!

Wow! Shiny Sparkly Flea-y
19. Terry replied yesterday on his return from holiday as advised above, top marks for that. All in price quoted £185 - seems reasonable. Sims website price guide is a bit unclear (to me) but seems more expensive when you add it all together. Cheerz, John
20.
I'm too old to understand this It can't be Guy Pratt. Did you check out the old WEM cabs they are using. That would be back in the late 60's / early 70's. Is he that old based on fact the guy in the photo looks mid 20's maybe. Dave
Check this out http://www.davidgilmour.com/visual4.htm same cabs, same shirt, August 29th 2006
21. C looks like Guy Pratt in his younger days with his lovely old P-bass. So I'll go with him 'cos I like his extensive range of playing style, like his humour & like his P-bass.
22. Sweet Good stuff & a bargain. Cheerz, John
23. All the Switchcraft sockets I've had lately have been really horrible to get a good solder joint onto. The metal used in them, because of the 'springyness' is not a material that solder takes to easily. The surface plating should make it easier but in some cases the only way to get a good joint is to clean the area with a file or emery paper & use a good flux. Even this doesn't guarantee a good joint, especially with 'modern solders' & you will need a decent soldering iron. Give me a shout if you have problems with it. Cheerz, John
24. That Jaffa Tape ^^^ is superb, I sealed up a cardboard bass box with it for courier t'other day, it's at least a thousand times stronger than 'parcel tape' & it looks good cool Well done Fumps
25. Have a look at the pots, they're date coded & if original give a good clue, or even markings on the heel of the neck.
