1.
I find I'm in complete agreement with myself - just checked the 1982 tweed case I still have and all the details you have pictured match mine.
What Howard said Just checked my '57 AV case (came with V s/n P-bass bought last year) & it looks identical to OP's pictures, without the wear, + mine has a G&G - Fender original Case - label inside. I'd say it could be anything from '83ish to present, not much help am I? Unlikely to be '60s though!
2. It must have been '73 through to '76 I had a ephing great Orange 2 x 18 & 2 Hiwatts on top. Trouser/flares flapping No wonder my bones ache
3. One of the salesmen in Bonners of Eastbourne told me "you can't re-fit strings that have been used before, they just break". I don't bother them with my custom any more.
4.
And the '62 AVs are supposed to be replicas of basses that were produced before rounds were even invented - this can't be right......... can it?
I had this conversation with Peter Cook guitars when I bought my '57 AV, they didn't have any decent flats in the shop, got onto Fender & they sent me a set - FOC!
5.
I've played that Pino, it's rather nice despite the rust.
Yeah OK - in a way 'nice', plays nice - but I'll never understand this 'relicing' lark - not for me, it just looks like a bass that's never been looked after - who wants to pay A LOT for that?
6.
(unless you can afford the Pino which has TI flats).
I know exactly how you feel, I went into GAK last week to try a '62 AV P-bass, of course it had rounds on so I was offered the Pino to try - £2399 I believe - yes it had TI Flats on, but it was very rusty in places & had loads of paint missing didn't fancy it
7.
This is getting worse than the BBC
Look on the bright side - at least you don't have to pay £12 a month for the pleasure
8. 215mm 8-1/2". Precisions for ever! Vintage frets, 7-1/4" Radius, 34" scale, made to measure thanks Leo, perfect fit Don't mind 1-5/8 or 1-3/4" Nut width, as long as it's 3/4" spacing at bridge, oh yeah - 4 strings MAX. When I try a Jazz neck it's always fast & comfortable for a short time, then the pains begin.
9. I had great pleasure dealing with Chris - sold him a P-bass wiring set, top guy, great communication & instant payment. Thanks Chris, glad it got to you in time. Cheerz, John
10. Jon bought a couple of replacement looms from me, 1 Jazz & 1 Precision, he's a pleasure to deal with, excellent comms & instant payment. No problemo with jon_kemo Thanks Jon, hope to deal with you again. Cheerz, John.
11.
My question to you guys is, whether there are any flatwounds that can compete with roundwounds for brightness.
Answer = GHS Brite Flats: Also available in other guages
12. Always good for me - bought a pick up from them earlier this month - ordered on the Tuesday 8th = here on Friday 11th. Great service - even still I moan about the 10 euro delivery charge it's worth it Cheerz, John.
13. I'm using flats on everything I play & there's plenty of 'tone range' to be had with different strings. On Precisions I've got LaBella Deep Talkin' 1954 Originals, Fender 9050M, TI Jazz Flats, GHS Black Nylons & GHS Brite Flats. The Brite Flats are Groundwound & do exactly what it says on the packet, I think you'd like them Although they're not common here, Stringbusters do them I believe, usually get mine fron USA ebay, got some GHS Precision Flats on order now. Cheerz, John
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/wem-vintage-wem-sapp...=item2eb35a0917
It looks as if the WEM on the pick guard is upside down I certainly remember the Selmer catalogue from school days!
15. You need to get your money back pronto, don't even think about a £ 100 repair! You ain't going to get a proper job done for a century I'm sure. Total Refund - Goods not as described.
16. I've just fitted a DiMarzio DP127 in my '57 AV & to me it's the mutz nutz! It looks as good as it sounds & as said above ^ it's equivalent to many a active bass in output. The bars instead of pole pieces are very neat & part of the reason for wanting to change - the raised poles on the A string '57 original were a bit of a pain sometimes. My Frank Bello has got Seymour Duncans, both P & J 1/4 lbs - the DiMarzio is clearer, crystal on every note, open string + harmonics ring like a bell, all with no background noise. I've also got SD 1/4lb in my MIM P & my '51 P, so they're my benchmark. Do you want a pick up that costs more than the bass though!
17. First Bass Owned: Tear Drop, Bill Wyman style, Hand made by Dad (woodwork) & me (design & build) 1964/5 'Go To' Bass: Fender '51 RI Precision, GHS Black Nylons. 'Your' Bass: Fender '57 AV Precision, GHS Flats & DiMarzio Pup.
18.
No mention that it's a real Fender but adding tags & stickers in the pictures seems designed to imply it's a Fender, a classic con banned under the sale of goods act. The bass is a dog & a half. That solid black on the forearm contour suggests it's plywood, not basswood but hard to tell given the blow torch relic job. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Precision-Bass-Relic...ac#ht_590wt_922
The bloke is a complete arse if he thinks that tone circuit is going to work at all!
19.
Found myself in a studio with an hour to kill, and started fiddling around. I was playing a P-bass through a 1971 WEM Dominator, so just a simple Volume control, no separate Gain. It occurred to me that I should be able to get "that classic overdriven valve sound" and sensible volumes by turning the WEM up and the bass down. I spent 30 minutes alternating between bass UP / amp DOWN and bass DOWN / amp UP ... and I couldn't hear any significant difference (beyond more hum/buzz from the WEM when cranked). If the volume on the WEM is UP, then presumably both the pre-amp and the power stages will be cranked high. Shouldn't that take any level of input from the bass and overdrive it?
Depends mostly on the output level from the P bass, what Pup is it?
20. Fine for me in Windows Media player, some sweet bass tones there, I'd say a good mix, excellent first attempt, no distortion. Cheerz, John
21. Me Little Bastard Mini Rig, it may be small but FCUK it sounds good
22. Steve had a P-bass 'drop in wiring kit' from me, great communication, instant payment & an all round absolute pleasure to deal with. Nothing fishy? Au contraire mon ami, he's as fishy as they come (Me too ) Cheerz, John.
23. I bought this last year as a 60th birthday treat for Jan 31st just gone I've been itching to do a few mods, just fitted a DiMarzio white Pup, made a Maple thumbrest & sprayed it white to match, I'm loving the look with the gold screws too. The DiMarzio has much more output than the original, it's so clear open strings ring like a bell, harmonics 'shine' & every note is crisp with so much power, yet no nasty noises. It's certainly a step up from the Seymour Duncan 1/4lb I've got in another P. Edit: Last photo added - how it was new/standard/out of the box
