I've only been to the shop once - which was disappointing & first impressions count! I 'phoned in advance to make sure a particular bass was in stock, so next day off I went. The bass was on display, to sum it up as "covered in crap" wouldn't be far from the truth. The usual snot & grot + more than a few marks - very off-putting when you're faced by a £899 price ticket! The only one of that model in the shop of course. To be fair, the discounted price matched the online price, but it looked so second hand I weren't interested in them 'giving it a wipe over' - they could have done that before I got there if they cared about a sale. It's one of the closest shops to me, about 30 miles away but I won't bother next time. The pros & cons of online/mail order - you can't see/touch what you're getting but you can be fairly sure it will be brand new & factory fresh, (if you're lucky).
The one made from plastic pipe, was something I have been looking at for myself. The "nursery" is quite small and at the moment I have 5 basses/guitars with another one due in this week, and with them all on seperate stands I am going to run out of room quite quickly. The pipe would mean that it is simple to build and light-weight.......just have to make sure that the wall of the pipe is sufficiently thick to avoid too much flexing/bending under load. It would also be the easiest to bulid - a saw and some pipe cement, and a pair of hands to push it together.
My original thought was to make out of wood (being a carpenter's son) but the plastic tube is something I've used a lot of before, plumbing for koi ponds etc. Now I'm thinking - I've got a stash of 20 or 22mm copper pipe in the loft! Some solder joints & a blowtorch EDIT: I've just seen the prices of solder ring tees & elbows, no chance! Rather get some nice wood
Well it never stops, does it? It does when you are skint, but then with some really good cheap basses around, we are spoiled for choice. I tend to always pay up front for stuff and avoid buying things on credit cause you end up shelling out a lot more and that is never recoverd when / if you sell it on. I tend to save up then spend. that way I know its my money, but cheap basses I get with pocket change and its a right laugh. I hope never to grow up
abso+1lutely! Oh yeah - Frank Bello signature on it's way this week
I'm currently rendered pretty much unable to play due to a nasty infection in my right index finger that's needed two courses of antibiotics to deal with it. My fingertip is incredibly tender, so fingerstyle is out of the question. I've switched to using a pick, but even that's too painful when I grip and, especially, when the edge of my index finger inevitably hit against a string. Has this happened to any other members? I have a few big gigs in a few weeks so whilst i would probably be well advised to simply leave the instrument alone, I feel obliged to do some practicising. Can you get spray on replacement skin or similar to cover up affected area? EDIT: I'm now trying the Eddie Van Halen approach and gripping pick between thumb and middle finger. Feels very weird.
Soak it in hot salt water for as long as you can & often as you like - cures everything then - when it's not so sore, get some surgical spirits on it to toughen the skin up.

Just how important is a decent bridge on a budget bass?
its not to do with width of the BADASS, its just BADASSs are very long, they usually go down very close to the edge of the bass, so there isn\'t enough room for an ashtray. depending on the model, i think your hipshot should be ok with an ashtray, but i can\'t say i\'ve ever tried it, and i don\'t know exactly which bridge you\'re using, so its a very big \"i think\".
I got the cover & as you say it's the length but the width as well. I've only positioned it for trial & it's a tight push to get it down so that it covers the bottom end, but can't go too far or the 'ears' will be over the contoured edge. BTW it's a '51P ri MIJ Sorry - first 2 pics the same & can't seem to delete 1? -

Bump for the weekend
All because I've gone back to black & flat, where I started from many years ago 1 - Rotosound Nexus NXB45, Black coated Type 52 alloy, 45,65,85,105 - £15 off Skjold, 35" scale, 2 a side tuners, used maybe 3or4 hours. 2 - Rotosound Nexus NXB45, Black coated Type 52 alloy, 45,65,85,105 - £15 off Traben Neo, 34" scale, 2 a side tuners, used maybe 1or2 hours. 3 - Fender 9050L Stainless Steel Flatwound, 45,60,80,95 - £10 off Tanglewood Electro Acoustic, 34" scale 2 a side tuners, again only a couple of hours use. All above, carefully removed, cleaned & repacked in original packaging, obviously loads of life left & ideal if you want to try these strings on the cheap! I always leave plenty on my strings for a minimum of 3 wraps around the pegs but obviously the G strings in particular probably won't be long enough for 4 a side heads. 4 - Rotosound SM66N, Swing Bass Nickel Roundwound, 40,60,80,100 - £12 Brand new never taken out of packet. 5 - Ernie Ball Strap Black Webbing with Leather ends + fitted Boston Straplocks black, with posts & screws - £12 As new, not used. All prices include posting in a jiffy bag, UK. Please feel free to ask any questions. Cheers, John

In my constant down sizing/weight reduction I bought a Genz Shuttle 3 10 combo. Quite loud but not quite loud enough (and really toppy). Decided to buy a small 2x10 cab to release the full 300 watts. The Ampeg is the smallest, lightest, cheapest, quality cab I could find, and so far it's great. 26lb (two finger lift )and adds loads of punch to the Shuttle with a really distinctive scooped low end. I've never played through a proper fridge, but I'm presuming this hints at what they sound like. Can't go wrong for £250 and it looks great!! It's here if anyone is interested: http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~A...0AV~id~8876.asp
Good to hear you're liking it, I've been looking at one to go with my Little Bastard (if they ever make 'em, another story!) Don't suppose you've tried it against a decent 1x12?
Hi Funny i was thinking about doing the same as i have a little bastard on order too. Had a mail from lee at ashdown today telling me they will be releasing a cab for the little bastard too It is a 2x12 and looks stunning i have a pic so if you want to see one just mail me also some pics from usa namm here mehttp://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=485143&page=12
Hi spaners, The long wait is not helped by the lack of information from Ashdown. I got email over a month ago - 05/01/10 about the 2x12 cab promising spec to follow but nothing yet. I've seen their picture of 'The Little Bastard Rig' is that the cab you're referring to? TBH the thought of a 2x12 cab just to handle a 30 Watt amp is almost as annoying as their advertising line -"The Little Bastard head partners perfectly with a range of Ashdown US Series cabinets". "US Series" - with the smallest a 500 Watt 1x15 going up to a 1600 Watt 8x10, I wonder how many of them a 30 Watt tube amp will 'drive'? I've been meaning to email Ashdown again, I will now.
