1. Well I started playing bass 50 years ago , made my first bass with my Dad in '64, played in a number of bands from '65 to '76, getting married in '75 sort of messed things up so I retired from the live music scene, having made a fortune that would last me forever always had a bass around the house, my interest in playing took off again when I got divorced in 2000 - I started playing around a bit retired from work in 2002 then in 2008 I found a new partner who encouraged my playing & still does Now my arthritic old bones slow me down a bit but I still play some most every day & fill my time doing a few repairs, set-ups, wiring jobs etc. did I mention looking at basschat occasionally?
2. That's criminal damage in my book - who in their right mind - - - defies belief
3.
This says 1.6 ounces http://www.amazon.co...e/dp/B002HF483G
I see Amazon also give the size as 8 x 4 x 0.8 inches - now thats what I call a cowbell!

8. A real pleasure to deal with Ed, he bought a Jazz Stacked Pot kit with Brass Shielding kit, great comms & instant payment, perfect transaction. Cheerz, John
9. Why not follow the suggestion & try a good cable - before asking more questions?
10. Try a good cable - bass to amp 1st! I remember last year working on a bass with a new Seymour Duncan 1/4lb SPB-3 IIRC, this had nasty noises when you touch the pick up poles, I measured a <2K resistance between the poles & the wires, I believe some of the inner windings were shorting to the poles.
11. I've had my Jaco (VJ96) over a year, bought 2nd hand through this forum, I prefer it over the Squier at similar prices. The playability is top score, I have it setup as good as any much more expensive bass & it plays perfectly. I much prefer the real rosewood fingerboard over the 'paper & resin' of the Squier, I have polished mine with lemon oil & beeswax, looks & feels good. All hardware is Wilkinson, quality components, the company has a good record for these parts, no problems at all & no need to upgrade anything, the pick ups give a strong output & have a wide range of tone with plenty of mwaaaah! Currently using GHS Black Nylon Tapewound strings, it's a delight to play. When I got it, still had the original roundwound strings & appeared to have been played quite a lot with hardly any marking to the rosewood. For a budget range bass I rate it as excellent value for money & would recommend it. It doesn't have the glossy shiny finish like a Squier, fits in with the road worn feel & looks, it's a player - not a looker I don't have any personal experience with the Squier so I won't knock it, I know many love them. HTH, Cheerz, John
12. Jeff is a top guy to deal with, I've made a few wiring kits for him now, every time he's been a pleasure to deal with, great comms & instant payment, a perfect gent. A highly recommended basschatter Cheerz, John
13.
I think you should use exactly the same kit as in 1978, you know, for the sake of complete verisimilitude ...
Good word Jack, +1 & the clothes Good luck Mark
14.
And not being funny it would be a shedload cheaper just to buy a bass like this in good condition you can pick them up complete on ebay for about £100 and it will cost a lot more to buy the parts to do your bass up even if you can source 2nd hand parts
Exactly this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stagg-XB300-Bass-Guitar-With-Case-/171208500823?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item27dcd26657
15. The 5 holes look pretty much standard for a typical BBOT Fender style bridge, check the measurements, plenty on ebay going cheap. As for neck to fit, 63mm across the heel is a common size, again get measuring if it's a 34" neck it needs, you should find the bridge mounting screw holes are approx 280mm from the edge of neck pocket, (as a rough guide) & it looks like the P routing is definitely a 4 string. HTH, John
16. I normally use & recommend CTS pots, they have metal shafts not plastic, the plastic shafts were used in some guitars years ago but mostly in amps. They are also the best 'feel' the best reliability & subjectively - the best for 'tone'. You are not going to hear any difference between comparable pots with any pair of human ears except hiss & crackle, pops & farts, that maybe down to dirty or worn internals. Alpha are the recognised 'Industry standard', a budget version if you like, although higher quality than what you find in most Far Eastern, & many European, origin guitars these days. CTS are basically the same top quality components that have been used in USA Fenders & many others since electric guitars began, failures are very few & far between unless they are mis-treated. In the electronics industry Bourns are very highly regarded, for quality, precision & repeatability - far above any such requirements for our ever so basic needs, which is reflected in the price of some of their pots.
17. I know nothing about Violins but isn't it a left handed model? Interesting restoration project
18. Yes the white is hot in the majority of 2 wire standard pups, the black is earth & the bridge ground goes to the same place as the black - to the pot body or to the jack socket centre. HTH, John
19. Excellent VFM: http://www.guitar-bass.net/reviews/vintage-icon-series-vj96mrjp-fretless/
20. It's worth trying a new wiring kit before lashing out on new pups, IYWMO
21. When did you find out? If it was clear when the booking was made then I suppose you are contractually obliged - but if you only found out today - I would tell them to go look for another band, at one day's notice
22. Yes you can wire direct to the jack socket or to volume pot then jack - no need for anything else - no cap or resistor. The effect will be like having tone control fully clockwise with a normal circuit. All you need is the hot wire from pick up to tag 1 on volume pot, output to jack socket from tag 2 (centre) & black wire from pick up to tag 3 & pot body & centre of jack socket. Hope that's clear enough? Cheerz, John

24. Get in touch with The Bass Doc from this very manor, famed for his custom pick guards, amongst many other things
25. Yep - every now & then, more so on new strings, not so much as they 'mature'
