1. I normally use & recommend CTS pots, they have metal shafts not plastic, the plastic shafts were used in some guitars years ago but mostly in amps. They are also the best 'feel' the best reliability & subjectively - the best for 'tone'. You are not going to hear any difference between comparable pots with any pair of human ears except hiss & crackle, pops & farts, that maybe down to dirty or worn internals. Alpha are the recognised 'Industry standard', a budget version if you like, although higher quality than what you find in most Far Eastern, & many European, origin guitars these days. CTS are basically the same top quality components that have been used in USA Fenders & many others since electric guitars began, failures are very few & far between unless they are mis-treated. In the electronics industry Bourns are very highly regarded, for quality, precision & repeatability - far above any such requirements for our ever so basic needs, which is reflected in the price of some of their pots.
2. I know nothing about Violins but isn't it a left handed model? Interesting restoration project
3. Yes the white is hot in the majority of 2 wire standard pups, the black is earth & the bridge ground goes to the same place as the black - to the pot body or to the jack socket centre. HTH, John

5. It's worth trying a new wiring kit before lashing out on new pups, IYWMO
6. When did you find out? If it was clear when the booking was made then I suppose you are contractually obliged - but if you only found out today - I would tell them to go look for another band, at one day's notice
7. Yes you can wire direct to the jack socket or to volume pot then jack - no need for anything else - no cap or resistor. The effect will be like having tone control fully clockwise with a normal circuit. All you need is the hot wire from pick up to tag 1 on volume pot, output to jack socket from tag 2 (centre) & black wire from pick up to tag 3 & pot body & centre of jack socket. Hope that's clear enough? Cheerz, John

14.
Hi, I've checked jack socket and all solder is good and everything tight etc. We I turn the pots up it only makes the hissing louder. ??? Cheers. Chris
You need a tech to look at it, it's likely the pre-amp is faulty from what you say. Where are you?
15. Could be just the jack socket, is it worse when you move the lead in the socket or rotate the pots?
16.
Yep one of the wishers SOHOST or something got 80 votes 80! And still won, oh well.
ordered.is it worth upgrading the pots while I have it apart.if so any recomendations
Definitely - with a quality set of innards you're upgrading the bass to USA spec (internally), where it matters.
