Retrovibe RV4 Rickenfaker in red
looks like it although not sure if this guy had to mod it a bit. Cool bass Ian, surprised your selling up given your comments about these! I might take the plunge on a black one soon.
Yeah well I bloody love this bass... but the new Rockinbetter have aroused me... I'm a fairly tall skinny fella and the Retrovibe has I believe the same dimensions as a Real Rickenbacker, which I feel looks daft on me as I dwarf it... For the last few years the Rockinbetters have been improving no end.. This year they've got 22 frets which turns me on as I like to spend time up the dusty end of the neck and to top it all off they're bigger than a real Rickenbackers and so fit me like a glove. I BLOODY LOVE EM!!! I learn't a bit of a lesson with the Retrovibe in that I love the tone of those Humbuckers (nice and twangy) and I won't be buying real Ricky parts for the Rockinbetters..... Plus I could get 3 Rockinbetters for the price of one Rickenbacker -
Haha, good sport! Is this the one on Ebay?
WAS the one on Ebay before I got grassed up to the Rickenf***er police!!!! @Karl - That's what I thought..... I've spent a small fortune on Rickenfakers and the modding them with real ricky parts only to find once I got the Retrovibe that I prefer the sound of that....... so my next projects will be modded with humbuckers MM style or otherwise..b -

Up for sale is my Ashdown Evo 3 C115 combo. As you can see I had Ashdown make me a cab with an extra 2u rack space which I filled with my Vintage Korg DT-1 pro rack tuner. My effects used to sit on top of the tuner. I fitted an Eminence Kappalite 3015 15" Lightweight Neodymium Driver which was a vast improvement over the original driver. In the pre amp section I fitted a Vintage Mullard 12x7 valve. This is the only one of it's kind The dimensions are as follows.... H 80cm W 61 cm D 40 cm The amp comes with the Vintage Korg DT-1 Pro rack tuner and Ashdown footswitch that controls the ... Valve , Eq , Compression and Sub octave
I should really have posted this in here in the first place. "Update. I've just picked the RV4 Rickenfaker up from a service. The E string was rattling a bit behind the fret so I guessed (correctly) that the nut was cut slightly too low on the bass side. They've put in a tiny ebony wedge under the nut that has sorted this completely. Also done were a truss rod tweak, fret dress, all pots, switches and jack upgraded, copper shielding of the cavity and interestingly the neck tone control changed to a variable coil tap. It really has completely upped the performance of the bass in every way. I'm chuffed to bits. The action is now fast and low. There were four Ric's in the shop. Two 4001's and two 4003's and the tech said it blew them all away in playability. He was very impressed with it. Hence him doing lots of extra stuff to it that I didn't ask for at no cost! It still sounds more like a turbo charged precision and nothing like a Ric though which is OK by me. The variable coil tap on the neck is great though gives it far too many useable sounds for a bonehead like me. I'm going to give it another gig outing on Saturday"
Hello Ad, Have you got a link to the fella that services you basses and doe he do mods?? I've got a Tokai Rockinbetter that I had put Riki pups and electrics in only to find (annoyingly after I spent a small fortune on Riki parts) when I got the Retrovibe I prefered the tone on that! Now my plan is to put in some MM style pups in the Tokai ... I'm still very impressed with the Retrovibe. I took it to rehearsals with my Joy Divison tribute and it really did the job... nice and twangy on the high end stuff and nice a bit of growl ..... COME ON THE BEE'S

Well I bloody love mine! I've got the red RV4 and as Ad (come on the bees) said 'it's alot of bass for the money'. I've still got the strings it came with on mine!!! Strange for me!!! Well at least they've stopped making my fingers black... I usually like to mod my Rickenfakers with real riki pups etc, but this one i'm going to leave!!! Yeah you heard right I'm going to leave it stock....! I'm so impressed with the pups that i'm seriously considering removing the riki pups on my Rockinbetter and fitting Musicman stlye pups!! I've asked Probass if there was any thru necks planned in the future and was told that a thru neck would dramatically increase production costs for only a small change in tone over the set neck. So not at the moment.... but you never know. He's got Fireglo RV4's on the way I only hope he doesn't get tooo many colours as i've gone a bit OCD about these basses;-)
A brief review as I haven't had it long. Finish is really excellent. Hardware is good quality. Neck is like a very slightly shallower Precision. Fretwork is good. The frets are low and thin vintage stylee. Weight is about 8 1/2 lbs. It's very easy to play. Pickups have a lot of output. Lots of growl and a nice snarly rasp too if you get my drift. Really pushes an amp without being boomy. The neck took a while to settle but it had been travelling in different temperatures for a while before I got it. Thanks Parcelfarce for the additional 3 days in an unheated depot. Slight niggles. Vol & Tone do nothing much until they hit zero. I'll replace these. Side dots on the neck are tiny and done in MOP so I can barely see them. I'll get stickers. Fingerboard was dry as a bone. Gave it a bit of oil. Apart from that it's great. I'll probably swap the pickups as I can never resist doing this even when I don't need to. A bargain at £249.
I received my red RV4 today and I agree with LEB the finish and hardware are superb. Plugging in,my first thought was this sounds really flat untill I realised i'd left the settings on my amp to flat as i'd been using my Tech 21 VT bass deluxe and Leeds through it ... doh!! Anyway sorted the amp and was chuffed to bits with the sound... really chuffed. As LEB said the pups have a lot of output with a lovely growl. I found the vol/tone to be ok (early days at the mo) and the switching between pups gives you a varity of tones. All this is straight out of the box, no string changes (the strings were alright for a cheap set) no set up no nothing just straight out of the box.... Fantastic! I can't wait untill I get some Elites for it and when I find my Korg Pitchblack i'll give it a decent set up.
Some more photos of the Squier VM 77 jazz bass: The body is done very nicely in black and chrome, neck and body alignment are great looking (no neck troubles, at any rate!), and the bridge seems fine, maybe not the greatest weight or mass. Ted
Nice to see the 77 in the flesh (sort of) your right it's a great looking bass. The action looks nice and low.... I think that is a lot of bass for £259!!!!
