2. Up for grabs is my Anniversary Rickenfaker which i've modded with Rickenbacker Bridge and neck pups- also had a black scratch plate and TRC made for it - i think it looks and sounds like the dog danglies- i'm only selling it as i've just got hold of another Semi acoustic bass, and I think the wife is going to take me out in the garden and execute me!!!! Also I like the idea of having a Rickenfaker made for me to my spec I'll supply the original bits if you want them. Offers please ..... 3.
I normally play a 1970s Fender Jazz, but a few years ago I picked up an odd Rickenbacker copy in a junk shop for about £30. I thought it would be OK to mess about on at home. I never really did use it and put it in the attic. Recently I took it out to have a look. Its a "Hondo II" copy of the classic black and white Rickenbacker, Korean or Japanese presumably. The electrics need a bit of work but it plays really well. The tail piece, fret board and all controls are identical to the original Rickenbacker and only the machine heads look abit cheaper. That said it tunes OK, plays well and feels quite heavy. It should be rubbish but it seems better than it should be. I'm thinking of getting it fixed up as a spare. Normally copies are pretty inferior but this seems unusually good. I know absolutely nothing about this copy - can anybody throw any light on it? Is it worth spending to get it working properly (electrics)? Cheers Eddie
Eddie they're funkin sh1t! If you like i'll take it off your hands for you........;-)

http://tuscanyguitars.com/tuscany_bird_cherry.html Complete with "Professional nut job for maximum left hand comfort"
Love the pick ups on this wouldn't mind trying one- don't like the price tho
 5. looks like a Hondo II to me - I thought Ibanez were thru necks?
 6. You know what, i'm worried my hearing is going! I picked up an Alba p bass recently for nowt as the neck was fecked and replaced the neck with a 21 fret Dr parts Maple neck. What I didn't realise is the fella that had it before me had messed about with the neck pocket so the new neck was a bit out- i've added shims and now the neck seems to be settling in now, i.e. not going out of tune as much. The bass sounds really nice I can't quite believe it..... Anyway I'm rambling a bit.... what i'd meant to say was has anyone tried out the Westfield p bass??? No? Well I have and again been blown away with quality of sound of this bass. I've seen them on the bay for £80 ish and they are well worth the money- just drop in some 1/4 pounders and your off....... Ian.

 10.
Playing chords on BG can be very effective if approached in the right way. My good friend Colin Hodgkinson was one of the first players to try this in the late 60's with his trio Back Door (sax/ bass / drums). You can find him on youtube. Well worth watching ! If you try playing chords in the low or mid region of the instrument, it will always sound muddy, OK for a special effect but limited in reality. Octave double stops work fine anywhere and 5th double stops work in the the mid range and above. I tend to only use chords in the range above the 12th fret and I limit this to 3 note chords for clarity. Minor sevenths (no 5th) and major sevenths (again no 5th) work well. Try this easy little sequence of 3 note chords in C major modulating to A major: Dm7 D (3rd finger 17th fret on A string) F (1st finger 15th fret on D string) C (4th finger 17th fret on G string) G7 G (1st fing 15th fret on E string) F (2nd fing 15th fret on D str) B ( 3rd fing 16th fret on G str) Cmaj7 C (2nd fing 15th fret A string) E (1st fing 14th fret on D string) B (3rd fing 16th fret G string) Fmaj7 F (1st fing 13th fret E string) E (2nd fing 14th fret on D string) A (3rd fing 14th fret on G string ) Bm7 B (3rd fing 14th fret A string) D (1st fing 12th fret D str) A (4th fing 14th fret on G string) E7 E (ist fing 12th fret E string) D (2nd fing 12th fret on D string ) G sharp ( 3rd fing 13th fret G string) A major A (open string or 2nd fing 12th fret ) C sharp (1st fing 11th fret D string) A (4th fing 14th fret G string) Once you have mastered this, you have the basic shapes that you can use in any key. And there are many other options we can look at another time - let me know if you want me to do some more on this ! The Major
Thanks for that your Majorness- bbbbbbbb
 11.
Peter Hook a total dickhead, looks and plays bass like a total t*at.
Been doing it for 30 years tho - how should you look and play bass??
 12. Joy Division........ Hooky may not be the most technicle of players, but what he does quite simply ticks all the boxes for me.. Joy Division were and still are my most favourite band ever ever ever.... But not only that, Hooky opened my eyes to the world of bass so for that i'm forever thankfull....
 13.
I must be some kind of pervert but is this the most disturbing post on Basschat yet?
Funkin hell Steve I laughed so hard at that comment a little bit of wee came out......!!
 14.
You do realise you're going to get known as the 'batty boy' whenever you play it?
Bugger! I didn't think of that
 15. God dammit that is one great sounding bass !!!!! well I was out an about this morning and thought i'd have a look at some basses as i've been thinking of getting a decent cheapish bass for away / sh*t venue gigs so I wouldn't be worrying about my bass getting swiped. Now i'm not a big Fender fan but I thought i'd give the Squiers a go. I had a good play on the VM JAZZ bass which really shocked me as it sounded, really really good!!! So much so that I was going to buy it there and then! Now when I walked into the shop I noticed the Pete wentz bass , but thought it was a kids bass with that funkin big red bat thing on it. So when I was asked I if I wanted to play anything else I was about to say no when my little girl (3) told me to have ago on the 'one with the batty on'.... so I couldn't say no. That's when I started noticing the jazz neck and the one pot .mmmm interesting I thought, plugged it in and was shocked at the sound this bass produces as OUT TOPLAYJAZZ said 'the Wentz bass is a revelation. Truly growly, but with strong, even tone. Sounds exactly how you'd want a passive bass to sound - ie., not making you wish you'd brought an active bass out with you!' That's me hooked - I've found my away bass quite by accident.. thanks to my little girl..
 16. This may sound daft- but does anyone want to trade their Vintage EST 96 4 string Stingray copy for my 5 string version...? just cant get on with the low B. I originaly got it to do some modding on it. It's in good condition but needs a new pot as the bit that keeps the knob on has split ...... I'll post some pics later. I don't mind what conditon the 4 stringers in as long as it plays....
 17. Been doing a bit of research I think I might put in a Nordstrand pick up and maybe one of their pre amps
 18.
Again - over to hooky6stringbass on this, he had a Rockinbetter & as far as I can tell subsequently judged his Anniversary to be a better bass. I have no experience of either but based on hardware it would appear the Anniversary is a more accurate copy - realistically the Rockinbetter is just a bass with a Rick-shaped body & headstock. There's a special mystery prize, by the way, for anyone who can find solid & indisputable evidence of a link between these basses & Tokai. And I don't just mean retailers' website listings. Jon.
Yep I had a Tokai... which I modded. Again it's a well built bass, but the stock pups are a bit weak. I modded that one as well totally transformed it into a snarling growly beast!!! The neck is a bit thicker than the Anniversay's but still a pleasure to play ( well for me anyway) but the Anniversary just feels erm ... right. My Anniversary is in stealth mode i.e. it's all black and the chrome hardware really sets it off. Love it
 19.
That Anniversary looks pretty convincing. The bridge kinda makes me think of the Hipshot replacement bridge for Rics. The bridge pickup cover looks tinny and fragile though, like it will bend as soon as you rest your wrist on it for pick playing.
Just had a look at the bridge pup cover that was on mine - it's quite sturdy, just doesn't look right!
 20.
Saw the Ric copy in Solihull. Superficially they look great, but get up close and they're not brilliant, nowhere near as good as the INDIE brand and definately over priced. Didn't get to plug it in as they didn't do a lefty. The neck seemed rather clumpy as well.
I don't know I'm sitting here enjoying a beer and I see this 'Superficially they look great, but get up close and they're not brilliant, nowhere near as good as the INDIE brand' and spit said beer over my laptop!!!! I've had the misfortune to play an INDIE recently and it's a pile of old sh1te, funkin orrible- the worst of the Rickenfakers... yes i'd rather have a Kay than an INDIE!!! I have the Jetglo version and I think it's a stunnnnnning bass to look at even up close - The neck is superb to play , quite thin and deffo not clumpy and the extra frets are a bonus. The size and shape remind me of my old Hondo II .. maybe just a bit longer. As i've said the build quality is superb but I feel the electrics let it down a tad- don't get me wrong, straight out of the box it sounds great, but with a bit of tweaking it'll sound brilliant. May be that's just me i'm very fussy when it comes to the sound... so far i've changed the stock pick ups to Ricky pick ups.... what a difference, i've not had a chance to change the pots yet ...... was it worth the money before I started modding it...... I'd have to say yes.
 21. I love this thread!!! There are some fatastic budget basses out there. My first decent bass was a Yamaha BB 300, really well built althought pups were a little weak. So I put the active circuitry and pups used on the BB 1200s and a Bartolini j pup, and changed the bridge to a Badass .... what a difference!!! I used that bass for years and recorded with it. I think it sounded much better the BB 614 I had- but the BB 614 is a great bass for the money. I've had a go on the Squier p basses and was really shocked at how good they sounded and i'm not a big Fender fan to be honest, but for £200 wow!!! My guitarist got a Squier strat and it sounds fantastic. I think if the build quality is good that's it for me i'll sort the electrics In time. I've had basses that all I needed to do was to change the pots to decent ones and some that i've had to change pots ,pick ups and maybe the bridge and that has made the world of difference.... The most i've spent on a bass was £550 each for my Shergold 6 string Marathons..
 22. Just picked up a Vintage Stingray 5 copy this morning.... very pleased with it. The body and neck are superb which is the main thing. Although the strings have seen better days and it needs a good setup I don't think the electrics are up to much. My question to you Stingray/ copy nutters ( I include myself) is, is there a decent pre amp and pup kit I could just put it with out tooo much hassle that would bring the sound closer to the Stingray sound we all know and love??? Cheers Ian
 23.
The MXR M80 has this facility and I used to use mine this way until I got my Pitch Black tuner. The Sadowsky preamp/DI has a dedicated tuner out, but this is probably outside your budget.
Yep the Sadowsky is over budget, basically I want to run my Vt bass pedal into a chorus into the di for away gigs that'll be better to travel light to. Did you mean re: the pitch black tuner. That as it is true bypass that you can get away with having it in line instead of in the tuner/ paralel out?
 24. I'm after a decent cheapish DI box with tuner out- can any of you DI experts recommend one???
 25. anyone used any Artec gear?? I've just found this DI box from artec It's an Artec SE D12
