I love my 79 P, despite it weighing so much that my collarbone cringes whenever I look at it. I swapped the pickups for Fender vintage reissues, as the originals weren't for me, and the growl and bite now is amazing - not sure if the weight contributes to that, but worth it if it does!
Hello there, Was it the 62 reissues you replaced the originals with??? Cheers Ian.
Of course you might get away with using some parts of a GT100 for bass but bearing in mind it was designed for guitar a GT10B would be better.
I read on the boss forum ( I think.I'll find the link) that the GT 001 can be used for bass, vocals and keys...this was from somebody from Boss... seeing as the 001 is the no pedals version of the GT100 I feel reassured...also the fella that does the GT editor recons it sounds a lot better than the GT10B... However I really hope Boss include some bass amps in thier next update for the GT100 and GT001....or dare I say it...a GT 100B!!!!

I've been thinking about getting the GT 100 for live work... used to use the 10B which was great... Gumtown on talkbass says it better than the 10B which is good enough for me... Can't believe it hasn't got xlr out!!!! I'd like to try out the GT 001 as well... Nice and small...

I wonder how much the guys at Stompbox will selling these for??

Very nice ...but if I get another one it has to be red...fingers crossed or that

£380!!! I'm a big fan of Tech 21 but I feel that's a bit steep.... If it had delay in there as well, that would be a different matter...oh well.

Can anyone in Basschat land recommend someone to make me a Precision pick guard with the pick ups reversed (think yamaha bb 1200)....has to be B/W/B... many thanks Ian.

If your here looking at this bit of kit you know how good the GT10B is... mine comes with a really solid Swan flight case. The GT10B is stuck firm to the foam inside with velcro and is ready for life on the road... I've use the GT10B live through the P.A. mainly and it is fantastic... so much so I hardly use an amp anymore. The GT10B has lived it's life in its flight case and is great condition... If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask and I'll get back to you ASAP.

hookys6stringbass replied to hookys6stringbass's topic in Build Diaries
Try guitarbuild.co.uk they make custom necks and body`s or for a standard neck try Northwest Guitars . I have just had one piece maple Jazz neck ( satin finish ) from them for £99 , and a Jazz Artic White 2 piece Alder body £150 - free delivery , brilliant . ( see Kit Build forum further down ) Pete
Thanks for that I'll check them out... -
Just getting some ideas for my next project... What I'd like is a 21 fret maple neck...preferably a wide 44.45mm (brass) nut (think Roger Waters signature bass) with the slightly larger 70s headstock Anyone out there know how much this would cost to make??? Cheers Ian.
For routing rectangular holes, it's actually very easy to make a template - my approach is to take a scrap of MDF/ply, carefully mark out the rectangle with a set-square, then use offcuts of pine batten temporarily screwed in to the side where you marked the hole. Then you drill a hole with a spade drill through the waste, run a jigsaw (carefully) around well inside the lines/battens, and drop a flush-trim (bearing on the bottom) router bit through to trim perfectly up to the battens, nice and square with rounded corners (same radius as the router bit). Seems obvious now, but it took me a few tries to figure out this as the easiest approach.
Great idea... I may well use this way.
I have never played through the Tech21 Leeds, but if I had to buy a Hiwatt preamp style, I would buy rather Shift-Line Olympic MKII because it's specially designed for the bass, it has a pure tube circuit and other option as headphone output + effect loop + ground lift switch. But it is true that it's more expensive than the Leeds. http://shift-line.com/card.php?device=60
Oooh that's interesting!!! I'll have to look into that seeing as there's no Tech 21 Leeds deluxe on the horizon...

The Yamaha BB range....vintage or modern you can't go wrong.
You could always butcher a second pickup so you have two D/G halves and switch between them. Alternatively something like a 4-coil split Bartolini pickup might do the job. Just throwing some alternatives into the mix
Not a bad idea...but I'm going to stick with the original plan...
-
Are you wanting to place the E/A half of the pickup the bridge side of the D/G half? If so I'd probably make the hole rectangular and then make a pair of holders for each of the configurations so that it's a slot in module. Are you intending to refinish the bass? It might be awkward to avoid disturbing the existing finish - you're bound to get a few chips. It won't be so much of a problem if you're using a scratchplate, I'd probably chamfer the edge surrounding the "module"
Yes that's right, the EA side moved towards the bridge...think Yamaha BB1200.. I was thinking rectangular as well for that very same reason. Definitely using a scratchplate...

Thanks for all the advice guys...brilliant stuff (bloody love bass chat! ) I was just thinking... How would the experts amongst you do what I want to do... ie enlarging the pick up rout on a precision bass so I can reverse the pick ups... I would like it nice and neat and will take my time to get it so ...
-
I've been looking at Dremmel tools and they look pretty decent for what I need it for...which is to open the pick up rout so I can reverse the pick ups... doing this will give me the option to swap back if needs be... Would like to have a go at making the pickguard any suggestions???
-
Thanks guys that's very helpful... Jez I'll check out your build....

I want to get a few bits together before I start my next project... I'll be doing some routing on a Precision bass...nothing major, but was wondering if anybody could recommend a decent router...hand held or otherwise. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Ian.
Thanks mate, I'll let you know if/when I decide to sell it
Ha!!! Was I really that transparent!
Just plugged it in for a while. It has that lovely and woody pre-CBS Precision tone, very reminiscent of the intro to 'One of These Nights' by the Eagles (and of course someone will now come on and tell me that the part in question was recorded using a Ric, but either way, this bass has that lovely organic tone). I don't know anything about the woods, but closer inspection suggests it's probably not quite the budget instrument I thought it was, I love the veneer between front and back (no idea why it's there though?). Despite having quite heavy flats it's also effortless to play (I believe the term du jour is 'like butter'). So, for the cost of a Squier I've got a rather lovely vintage Precision in lovely condition. Rather chuffed Might think about a black pickguard though!
What a find!!! I've been after one of these for years to add to my vintage Yamaha collection...enjoy.

NBD - 'bespoke' Bass Collection P-bass
hookys6stringbass replied to disgrace of bass's topic in Bass Guitars
My Fender American Deluxe Precision is black and maple...you are right, its a very nice colour indeed - very Roger Waters.
I had a Fender Deluxe in black and maple too...great bass but I prefer my old BB Yamaha's...However I have an urge for a Bass Collection to my own specs...shame they haven't got a maple neck with 21 frets...
