1. Saw them at Knebworth in 1990 and was well impressed with them. Some great songs.
2. I have used Dunlop 1mm nylon picks for years. However I was at the Mansons guitar show and bagged these for free from the Ernie Ball stand, they came with a pick tin and they are great. 3. Yeah, Oasis are about the songs, especially Liam's voice (which was great) and the wall of sound guitars. Noel played the bass on all of Definately Maybe and most of What's the Story. I had a quick peek of Tony Carrols biog in WHS and he said Guigsy was a bit wobbly lived but he managed to work with that, but in a studio it didn't cut so Noel deleted all the tracks and did them himself. We do Cigs & Alchohol and TBH I made my own bassline up that I enjoy playing. Best not to mention Oasis & basslines in the same sentance.
4. I agree. I love the look of my Trace UV light and my mirror scratch plate reflecting the lights back.
5. Never bothered me but our guitarist insists on being to the left of the drummer as we stand so I end up the other side. Previously I used to be on the drummers snare side more often than not.
6. I don't shout about it but most people know I play and a few have seen me play. I work with a friend who is a bassist. I have bought my Stingray and speakers off him. I also lined him up with the job.
7.
Hi all - I just got a Google alert about this thread - I think I joined Basschat a few years ago but I'm afraid I haven't visited since! So - silldx - thanks very much for your comment. I've been having a fantastic time on the Gong tour - we started in France in October, went to Holland, Switzerland, the UK and finished in Japan a few days ago. (So sorry Mep - you've missed it) To clarify the equipment I'm using - your right about the Vigier fretless - though the fingerboard is actually Delta metal - it's like brass but is harder - it is an absolutely superb bass! The Markbass gear is a Little Mark Tube 800 and Two 604 cabs - although in Tokyo I used a Momark black 800 and a Standard 104HF cab. The pedal board is a Keith McMillan Softstep - a very versatile MIDI pedalboard that is also very small and light - so perfect for touring. I used a Focusrite Saffire audio interface. On the Macbook Pro I'm using Ableton Live - I have one channel as a bass effects unit - using various plug ins - and other channels of various sound samples that I've programmed to augment some of the songs and provide soundscapes. btw - which gig were you at?
Great to hear from you Dave. Thanks for posting on this thread. There is plenty of love for Gong & Hillage on Basschat. Hopefully you will check in from time to time. I have double checked Dec 14th and it appears that Kangeroo Moon are in Exeter. I'll keep look out for your next tour.
8. I agree about going to last page. I have mentioned this in another post and it would be a great improvement.
9. If you can find a 2nd hand Aria Pro 2 fretless then go for it. I really like mine. +1 on going lined to start. Years ago I had a MM Stingray 5 string fretless that was unlined. A beauty but a bit intimidating at first.
10. Keep an eye out for it's re-listing. Bet it goes for few quid with some of you keen to get your hands on it for spares!
11. Brass fretless fingerboard, wow! I like Gong & have just checked their tour dates and they are in Exeter on Dec 14th, but no tickets left.
12. Yeah forget the comments. Interesting as a school science project thought. No 5 string version yet!
13. Thanks for the update. We appreciate all the work done to keep this great site and bass community running.
14. Odd why it doesn't work after getting fixed only recently. Any update on the issue?
15. Yeah, me too with my Android. Was ok for a few days after all the great work getting the site sorted.
16. Thanks. It's getting a bit frustrating as the home page looks awful at pressnt. Looking forward to buisness as usual soon.
17.
I will be there, working with MSL on the MarkBass stand... come and find me! I'll be the one looking like the semi bald git in my avatar!! I am a dedicated MB user and will have my pair (fretted/fretless) of Lakland 55-02's with me, along with my JV '57 precision... come and have a play on them!
I'll be sure to stop by the MB stand to say hi and check out what's on offer.
18. I thought it might be something like that. Thanks for your quick reply. I'll check again soon. Better play some of my free app games then.
19. I have been happily viewing the site on my Samsung Galaxy S2 since I've had it. I liked the way the pages are viewed on the mobile screen and there was a great slide down menu to log in, view new content, notifications etc. However, today when I loaded the pages they are viewed as if I was on a pc. This is a major hassle as I cannot navigate the site easily and have all but abandoned going on Basschat unless I'm on my laptop (as I am when creating this post). I have checked my settings, but nothing has changed or been updated to cause this. I also tried on my wife's phoned but that was the same. Plenty of other web pages display ok as they should for a mobile. I will admit I don't know much about how web sites or smart phones deal with displaying web pages. Is there anything that has happened to the site that may cause this or am I missing something else? I need my fix of BC on my mobile, so I hope someone can help. Edit. BTW when viewing threads on the mobile there is no way I could find to go the last page, which is a hassle if you start looking at a long thread.
20. I'll be going on Saturday with one of our sons who plays guitar. Any other BC's going?
21. James Jamerson with his 'hook' one finger technique? He made it his own and sounded great. Not sure if you would call it terrible technique, but 2 fingers are generally considered as being 'normal' technique. If I played with just 1 finger I would sound crap. Even with 2 fingers I would struggle to play some of his lines.
22. OK. this is the transcription for the whole song from a 1993 guitar magazine. Our guitarist has shed loads of these mags and always seems to have transcriptions for the songs we need. Enjoy. Edit. I had a look at Evil Undead's tab and it's good, but it's only for the first half of the solo. The second half is different, although you could repeat the first half. I have done a few variations of this when I have forgotten the order and mixed it up and also changed a few notes. It's worth doing it right if you can and also getting the correct rhythm variations between the verses and all the runs. Also we keep the syncopated bit in the 2nd verse the same as the 1st verse to make it easier. That second verse bit is odd! Our drummer did it in his old band and the bass player did some real lame-ass version for the whole song. Don't make that mistake. BTW you need a decent drummer to get the feel right.
23.
Glad I'm not the only one. Remembering the damned part is the most difficult bit
IMO it's better than the guitar solo.
