1.
As a rule I love the 12 band SMX, it's one of my all-time favourite amps with everything I need in a bass amp and the sound to boot. These days I would stay away from the preshape which scoops too many mids and leaves too much bass and clack. This never bothered me in the 80s! I swapped out the valve for another and with the right EQ and compression the amp did a reasonable job in Ampeg territory. It needn't always sound like 'typical' Trace.
I've owned my 2nd hand Series 6 AH200 head for 16 years now and love it. I too have dabbled with the preshape but in a band situation it is lost (except for some slap). I go for boosting the low mids and it really works and cuts through the mix a treat. I get a lot of positive comments on my sound (ok I also play a Stingray as well). Loads of headroom to boot as well.
2. I much prefer the Pot to the Knob. If I have to deal with knobs there will be endless Knobbing.
3.
Guy Pratt 'My bass and other animals'. He's played with them all Page & Plant, Pink Floyd, Madonna etc etc
+1 It's a great read. In fact I may give it a 2nd reading soon!
4. A few years ago I auditioned for a well known local band as their bassist was unavailable for a gig or 2. A mate of mine was asked first but was not given much time and he passed and so did the 1st gig. For the next gig they asked me. I power learnt the set list and went for the audition. We got through a load of songs and I felt confident I could pull the gig off with minimal trouble. It was at a local pub that didn't have a good reputation and it was only covers. After the practice the singer and his father (who managed the band) went off for 10 mins. They came back and said the pub had called and knew of their predicament and said if they don't want to do the gig they didn't have to. The manager took their offer and cancelled the gig! I was gobsmaked and suspected something. The timing was coincidental and I had just nailed the set. They said that they didn't want to go out not sounding like themselves so passed on the gig. Why bother to ask 2 bassists to try & learn a set for some crappy local pub gig if they felt like that. They later tried to get it on as an original band and failed as that.
5. Hi & welcome. That is one intro. You obviously have been saving it up.
6.

That is so bad!!
7. I have the larger auto grab one which secure my bass very well. This looks ok if you want to keep you kit to a minimum.
8. I will admit to watching bits of I'm A Celebrity & Strictly and the guys from McFly have done well on both. I'm pleased Dougie won, not cos he's a bassist but as he came across really well. Mark Wright, the runner up, also came across well, although I will never watch TOWIE!
9. Any reason why the lefties were photographed upsidedown?
10. Mine died in a similar fashion some time ago. I planned on getting the MP3 version but have not got round to it. They seem difficult to buy now, are they still selling ew ones or do you have to buy second hand? I still use mine as a practice tool as it still functions with the bass ok and I plug my phone or laptop into the input and play along to the song with my cans on. Ok, the functions I liked are not there for manipulating the CD track anymore but this isn't too much of a problem. I edit any track with Audacity first to get any tempo or key changes sorted and if playing via the laptop I cut the bass from the eq to help a bit. £10 +p&p seems a fair price for something you can still work with to a point. Good luck. .
11. Perfect for miming with in the fake backing band
12.
Bit off topîc but this is Paul with a Dutch bass-player who does a great job... Pity that the voice is gone..

Oh so true
A real shame about Paul Young. Without the video you would think it was a cover by someone else. Good bass playing on this. I transcribed this song for some cool fretless playing a while ago. Tasty.
13. I've just put a couple of sets back on 2 of my basses that I soaked in meths for 24 hours. It works a treat, and they sound practically new. Not much meths evaporated either, so plenty left for a few more soaks.
14. Now that is cheap! And free postage to boot. I'm sticking to some middle ground here. I've been using Roto Nickel rounds lately and they have performed fine for me. Instead of changing them after quite a few months playing I cleam them in Methalated spirits, which you can read up upon. It really works, so get the strings that work for you and clean them when you feel you need to.
15. Stick with both and what's best for the song. I love playing with a pick, but couldn't use it all the time.
16. From what I've seen and heard of John Entwistle he had all his basses out in various rooms, not stuck up in the loft. What a load of old tripe! Also, what a crap set of photo's. No full shots of the bass at all.
17. Our covers band uses somehig like this although I can't remeber which make. For what they are they are ok. Lightweight, compact, no heat gain, sound to light you are on to a winner. Our singer bought them and we can tell what sort of gig he had by them. If it was a good gig he is 'networking' with some (female) punters and we have to pack them up. If it was a bad gig he packs them up!
18. Have a great one. As is fairly common with a lot of bands there are no gigs down in the south west peninsula where I live. A shame as some bands will play Plymouth Pavillions which is the nearsest decent venue on some tours.
19. 911tabs.com works for me. They will search a load of tab sites for you.
20. A cheap, but maybe less effective, way to get a passing synth sound is to use the Boss OC2 with more of the effect than the original signal and play the notes an octave higher. It has worked for me on a few tunes.
21. Nice one. I quite fancy a TC amp and this is a bargain, but I will have to resist - for now. Good luck and i'm sure whoever get's it will have a blast.
22. Currently in our set I use the OC2 in 2 songs and the chorus in 2 songs, but not together. I don't feel the need for any distortion or anything else, and that is after years of barely any effects for covers or originals.

Hello!

Hi & welcome to the forum. Where are you from?
24. I did have 4 basses until today when I gave away my old Clarissa electro acoustic to a college friend of our eldest. I haven't played it for a long time. The piezzo pickup died years ago and the neck and action are quite bad after it went on a plane many years ago.The intonation was also bad and you couldn't play along with another instrument as it got more & more out of tune up the neck. I have recently moved house and no longer have a dedicated music room with it and my acoustic guitar hanging on the wall. All my gear is now stored under the stairs. He is a young aspiring bass player so hopefully it has found a new home and will get played. My main gigging bass in my Stingray which is tune down a semitone. I use my Charvel to practise at home in concert pitch. My Aria fretless get's to come along to a gig every now and then when I'm in the mood.
25. Hey, at least you didn't have to give a months notice to quit the band! Good luck in your next project.
