Very nice playing all round. Chord sequence reminds me of Pat Metheney's Phase Dance.

The Formula For The Optimum Number Of Basses...
4 Strings replied to lowregisterhead's topic in General Discussion
So after reading this.. I have come to the conclusion.. that I won't be getting a wife..
Normally just one bass is repellant enough to conclude that. There may be another formula here. If, merely by being a bass player it means most women are no longer potential wives anyway does that mean that the micro-minority of women who pledge allegiance to a bass player is not going to mind whether he has multiple basses or not. (Mine doesn't mind as such, in fact she even provided the wherewithal for a Sabre. I think I just lose a little respect when another one turns up.) So is there a formula for the likelihood of a bass player actually attracting a mate (low probability), and then the mate being sympathetic with his cause (therefore high remaining probability)? -

New basses and beating the Credit Card system...
4 Strings replied to ZenBasses's topic in General Discussion
Since the advent of debit Cards, I've not actually had a credit card. -
Well, here's the other bass I need to sell to realise my custom Ruach 'Utility Bass'. This is my red Stingray that I use all the time and the bass that I'm risking that the custom is going to be all I need it to be! Plays great, sounds great, is great. Proper Stingray sound on bridge pup, big sound on front pup and a load of variations from the coil splitting selector. (Second one in is a killer slap tone!) I do a lot of soul and Motown, hence the second pup, the range of tones on this is, well everything I can imagine anyway. Even does a nice Jazz sound with both selected in the middle. All pots work, neck beautiful, usual gunstock oil finish, Heath at Ruach slimmed it down a little, bit more towards the Pre-EB shape. Finish is amazing! A couple of nicks in the red as shown in the pics, the small crack you may be able to see on the horn just above the neck is just in the lacquer, you only know it's there if you know it's there. The red is truly stunning in reality, bit more translucent and deeper than it looks in the pics. Not sure what else to say, ask any questions, let me know if there's anything else you need to see/know. Comes with original MM case and case candy. The Hipshot shown will come off and the standard tuner returned. Bought it for £750 from a Basschatter who had it from new, selling for same. May consider close offers as definitely need to sell. (I'm sure there are plenty of these around in the world but not come across another!)
I really like that bit of flame maple! Also.. The truss rod from the back is something I've not seen before so that's very interesting
Thanks! I'd love to wipe a damp cloth over to see the how it will look with a finish! Won't be able to move the neck outline too much in the direction desired as there's a bit of a knot to steer clear of. Never have I been so excited about a piece of wood! Just about every Fender designed guitar and bass with a solid maple neck has the truss rod from the rear. Only relatively recently (10-15years?) did they standardise construction by applying maple fingerboards (instead of cutting the frets straight into the body of the neck) and mounting all truss rods from the top. The back of the neck picture in the first post shows what it looks like from the back.

Wood has arrived! The pencilled outlines were put on by the supplier to prove (to himself?) the size to be adequate for a bass. Here's the body, one piece of English Sycamore. Actual body shape still to be decided, I'm thinking something between a G&L and a Wal. I'm currently thinking maybe a reddish waxed burst. However, I'd quite like a finish that an be easily changed. Here's the neck, quarter sawn flame maple. And the top part of the neck, I'd like to see the neck moved up and to the right from the pencil marks to put the light flame into the headstock. Heath suggested an amber wax to give it some colour. This piece of maple is thick enough to allow a laid back head, as opposed to a flat, Fenderesque type. In which case it's likely to be 2+2 rather than one sided. The neck will be one piece without a separate fingerboard, the truss rod mounted from the back with a walnut 'skunk stripe' in the slot. Hopefully Heath will be popping by my place next Saturday evening to talk about body and head shapes. He'll be bringing a pencil.
Loads of very good suggestions here. Speaking of jimmy Johnson (whitecloud) i have 100s of bass related cd's mainly funk, acid jazz, jazz, soul, n soul, rare groove, solo bass.etc i would like to offer one i feel VERY overlooked as bass players album prob not even looked at at all, and its one of my fave bass albums, i have it up there in the top 10 please check out jimmy johnson's playing one of wayne johnson,s album. The Wayne Johnson Trio. Grasshopper.( as well as others) here is a bit i found....Enjoy..
Thanks, enjoyed that. The only Wayne Johnson I could find on Spotify is a different kettle of fish! Shame, will have to look a bit wider.

I used one of these for a while, same colour too. The rad cap came loose on a trip to a gig up the M11 once and it lost its water, poor little thing burnt itself out, but still got me home afterwards with a new load of water and a careful run.

The Formula For The Optimum Number Of Basses...
4 Strings replied to lowregisterhead's topic in General Discussion
Wonderful work, gentlemen. Last night, in a moment of rare clarity, I presented our findings to She Who Must Be Obeyed, and within minutes was handed a sheet of paper with the following typed on it: "Bollocks." I'm not certain what that means, but I'm fairly sure it's not an equation.
It's the answer to the question "What would you say if someone commented that you, as a wife, limited the number of basses in the house?" -

The Formula For The Optimum Number Of Basses...
4 Strings replied to lowregisterhead's topic in General Discussion
Good point so: dx/dt=x - n[sup]2[/sup]/t + 2 for positive integer values.
See, now I failed A Level maths, so I was thinking more n<mt+c where n = number of basses m = rate at which you can accumulate without notice t = time c = the number of basses with which you started when you met her. This would conclude that if the rate at which you accumulate without notice becomes dangerously high you can start again with a new 'er indoors with a higher number of basses with which you started, confirming the previous post which suggested this. -
The Formula For The Optimum Number Of Basses...
4 Strings replied to lowregisterhead's topic in General Discussion
So it is x+1<n-1 for positive integers. Where n is a constant fixed variable dependant on environmental emotional conditions and x is a variable that can increase and decrease freely dependant on volume and pressure of the GAS.
But this doesn't account for rate of change. If the increase in the number of basses per unit of time exceeds 'N' (Notice factor) then the game's up. For safe operation: n/t<N where n=no. of basses t = time (year, for example, in extreme cases, month) If, by joining Basschat, there is an increase in the rate at which the number of basses increases then we have an n[sup]2[/sup] situation and there is no hope for bass player or partner as n[sup]2[/sup]/t will quickly be larger than almost any reasonable value of N -
What do Wals sound like? Wals? Or something else? I'm looking for fretted examples, back and front pup if possible.

Now tuners. We don't seem to be able to make such things here in the Workshop of the World (unless I'm wrong..?) and Hipshot are looking very likely. However an interesting detour was via Rubner products for double basses. These are extraordinary tuners for very reasonable prices. Have a dig about here http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.rubner-markneukirchen.de/&prev=/search%3Fq%3Drubner%2Btuning%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26biw%3D1094%26bih%3D684 However, won't be going there as their standard models do not come with a slotted post (just horizontally drilled) and without the 'Fender' drilling into the length of the post in which the ends of the strings get tucked. They say they do custom designs, I'll see how much it would cost to do that, making them suitable for electric basses. Meanwhile, the wood still hasn't been delivered, been promised on Monday now. I keep looking at pictures of flame maple necks! when it arrives I've been promised pics and I'll put those up.
