1.
I had no idea about this, I always thought it was a cute feature of my ASAT. Great bit of info. Bet these basses are amazing, best of luck with the sale.
Thanks, they are! I suppose it's one of those things, why G&Ls are not much more popular .
2. These basses have two piece necks, split vertically so that the fingerboard is actually the neck itself on the L1500. Have a read here: http://www.glguitars.com/features/neck.asp
3. I imported this Wunkay from a Basstalk member who had given money to charity to help a friend by selling this bass. It's a 1981 L1000 in a lovely Tealey sort of blue with a beautifully golden maple neck (I just HAVE to have a maple fingerboard!. For it's age it's in beautiful condition. I'm having a purge on basses, but this one if the keeper. The massive tone (especially in omg mode) you would expect. Got Trubass strings at the moment, maybe a need something a bit less soft sounding. 4.
Status flats will get you those classic tones but take a little while to bed in (like a lot of flats). The E string in particular sounds like it's from a different set until it eventually opens up. I removed the first set I tried immediately because I thought they lacked character but I tried them again a couple of years later and they settled into a more vintage tone than the Labellas that I have. Lovely mids. Good value too...
Do you use flats on your L1000?
5. Lots of interest, but both still here at the moment. There's lots of great reading and pics here: http://www.ggjaguar.com/gnl.htm
6.
What's the exact weight of the L1000 please?
Hi ikay, thanks for your interest, although I was waiting for that question! I have rubbish scales, very imprecise, I'll need to borrow some or make an odd request of a neighbour. Watch this space, I'll get there in the end!
7. Here's a couple of sets of machine heads. You can see the small 'birthmarks' from the jig dowel when the neck was made. L1500 L1000 If you're interested in the 'birthmark' they are explained quite well here: http://www.guitarsbyleo.com/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4288
8. This looks lovely. As a fellow Ruach owner can only commend Heath's enthusiasm and his work. A maker of great basses! Have a free bump!
9. Here's a sound example of the L1500: https://youtu.be/8wA-nPwbs3g and the L1000: https://youtu.be/okO-aXRlMqM (Might be the strings but I think a warmer sound in the flesh)
10.
Great looking basses! The '87 L1000 is an eye catcher for sure. How would you describe the neck on it?
Thanks, there's something about their simplicity I love. Neck on the L1000 is 'Precisiony' I would say. It's not slim like the early Stingrays, but not chunky by any means. Certainly sturdy, unaffected by changing conditions (but then you'd expect that). I can give dims if you're interested. Here's a detail of that crowned fingerboard, apparently to avoid any warping due to varying thickness if the joint was simply flat (as they are now). 11.
Where abouts are you based?
Good question, thanks, Joe, I'm near Romford in Essex (original post edited - not very good at this yet!) nice and near the M25.
12. Fascinated by G&L basses, I bought a red Wunkay from our very own Gareth for £700, loved it and it inspired the purchase of more! I now have too many basses and need to thin herd - as hard as that may be! Both are very nice basses, completely different in character but both have the well documented wide range of available sounds. The L1000 has now been sold. 1996 US G&L 1500 - natural with solid maple neck - £550 It would seem this bass has had an easy life, appearing to have hardly been used in its 20 years of life. It's not perfect, there are a couple of tiny dings in the varnish but is almost mint. This is a powerful bass; you can plug headphones straight into the jack socket and practice without an amp! They have been described as G&L's answer to a Stingray and, yes, definite similarities, but this is more powerful and a very 'modern' sound. Certainly cuts through. This bass plays like butter! It's a beautiful piece of work, the neck is sumptuous! There's not much else I can say, other than it you're G&L curious this is a very cheap way into their 'professional' range of basses. Everything works perfectly, the range of sounds is amazing for a single pup. Pictures below. I'll weigh and add weights when I can. Pickup preferred (from Romford, Essex) but can post/courier etc at your cost. Open to trades for a Stingray or a Fender. 13. The Roto Trubass tape wounds are smooth sounding, an element of 'clack' if you're not careful but no treble to speak of. I have these on an old Precision, sound is lovely for soul and Motown
14. G&L JB bodies are smaller than the original. Arguably better made too and certainly cheaper.
15. Musicman, Stingray if you can afford it, SUB if you can't. Has a boost at very high frequency (if you turn up the treble) making it mountainous for slap. If you wanted to move away from Leo, who not buy a Jaydee? The active Roadies are slap machines and beautifully made and specified.
16. That clip doubled its value!
17. Ha, oh well, glad it's being seen and enjoyed by others, thanks!
18. Here's one I've not seen before thought might be new to others too. I'm always delighted to see something new from one of my biggest heroes and influences. Note is almost obsession with using open strings (that intro, not 5th fret on the D for the G?) fed, I think, from his background on the upright. Anyway, if it's new to you or otherwise, hope you enjoy it. (Is that Smokey in the background conducting his song?) https://youtu.be/vh_Qg4CbM8Q
19.
Some info for you http://www.glguitars...atures/neck.asp
Thanks, Gary, that's the kiddie, very interesting. Just had a look at the old ('87) Wunkay and, sho'nuff, same, never noticed, you have to look really hard! Seems to work well, not that the other methods don't, but G&L seem to have a thing about avoiding twisting necks, the reason for their crown shaped fingerboards too.
20. NBD! A G&L L1500 imported from the US. All sorts of nice comments relevant (amazing neck - hugely powerful sound etc). But, the unexpected thing was the neck construction. Maple fingerboard, no skunk stripe, natural assumption would therefore be..... yes, you got it, separate fingerboard, as if it was rosewood. No! Looking closer there is no separate fingerboard. How did they get in the truss rod and its anchor? Looking really close, really close, you can see that the neck has been split vertically, just off centre. Presumably the rod and anchor inserted sideways and the two halves stuck back together. Even when necks are made as a sandwich of different woods I understood the truss rod to be inserted under the fingerboard. For the record I can get the action impossibly low for a bass with no buzzing. New one on me...'Mazing!
21. I maintain I Want You Back by the Jackson Five has one of the best baselines in any song. How much of it he created I don't know but it is superbly played and, not being a fan of the use of picks, this is one of my very favourite performances. A sad loss.
22. I saw this in Currys recently. Various colours in various states of supposed wear and tear. Funny how some items seemingly need to be shiny, others, seemingly, need to have been owned for years and well used.
23. Strings more lively than the solo. How does that scratch plate work though?
24. Nothing wrong with a decent P, is all you actually need and many famous players seem to gravitate to them eventually. Congrats! I notice yours has a skunk stripe at the back. Is it a one piece neck or a separate maple fingerboard? Also, that G string position away from the edge would bug me also. The older Fenders used to have multiple grooved string saddles. I wonder if you managed to get one as a spare part (or even all four) you could space the strings as you pleased. https://www.allparts.com/BB-0355-001-Vintage-Bass-Bridge_p_590.html for example
