Is it because stingrays in particular are, in my opinion anyway, sort of hard wearing utility type bass and gold and bling just doesn't seem to go for many?

Well, it is making a comeback isn't it? I wonder, as we're all getting fed up with the 'establishment' music, ie X_Factor etc, that this more complex and difficult music will come to the fore, then we'll think it pompous and Punk will have a renaissance. Then, disgusted, we'll get into 'establishment' music again....

If the hit on the strings is intentional effect then fine, but many bassists give a little unconscious hit to keep time and this makes for a messy sound.

I agree, if there is any difference (which I doubt) then the slightly harder the wood on which the metal fret is mounted the brighter the expected sound.

I think Alex did in the past, probably too many going through to be able to do that now, easier to link to a signal for home 'Hellatoning'. I'm suspect the effect of loosening is different with different speaker construction/size etc. Perhaps the foam surrounds are less needing a loosen. (They certainly become loose after 10 years or so when the foam begins it's conversion to dust!).

Yes! Dangerous, but a nice feeling. Did some recording on Saturday, drummer is a perfectionist with a sharp ear and wanted to go through the first track as he heard some bass parts not in time. Ran through with everyone, got to the end, he couldn't find anything and it sounded surprisingly tight to me!

Ok, feel guilty of gossip now. I'm not looking at his ads anymore.
