1. Not had an accident but our drummer has been a lorry driver with loads of several tons behind him and is very aware of heavy lumps in the back and where they'll if he hits something. He tends to pack so that large items go across the car to act like a barrier. We all do the best we can to avoid loose things lieing on the top even though its the favourite place to put guitar.
2. You're struggling with the range of makes suggested? I think people's brains are really cooking to guess this one.
3. 1000W is fractionally louder than 500W (needs to 5,000W to be twice as loud). A cab with an efficiency (ie the energy released as sound for each Watt you put into it) of 103dB/W will be twice as loud as one with 100dB/W measured at the same distance (normally 1m). So, rather disappointingly, you may not notice the improvement of a 750W amp over a 500W amp, but you will certainly notice the more efficient cab. Also, don't forget output ratings are normally associated with speaker impedance, so 500W amp into 4Ω is likely to be louder than 1000W amp into 8Ω. The speaker rating is to do with how much heat it can take without damage, if you're not going to be belting flat out then either of those example combinations you gave will be fine. Generally you're safe if the cabs can take all or more than the output of your head, but I've run bigger heads for most of my life. You hear the speaker complains if you over do it, time to stop and add another cab. Or turn down. (To be picky, its 'W', not 'w' as the unit represents a persons name - Watt).
4. No, they have toaster pickups.
5. For that money, I'm sure the shop could put on a different E string for you? Also, the bridges have mutes don't they?
6. Well, I'd even go on to say there's no uncool bass players (just in case its me!) Ricks uncool? Nope, still cool, just looked.
7.
I saw an interview with Cordell Mosson (from Funkadelic) where he mentioned getting some stick from his bandmates for playing a Rickenbacker as it was deemed to be a Rock bass and not suitable for Funk, so genre stereotyping of instruments is not a new phenomenon.
Yeah, Rickenbacker had been a stereo type bass for a long time.
8. I love the sound of Wurlitzers and Comptons and the idea of what they are. Look at this, from the State cinema in Grays, Essex; No doubting the talent, looks etc of Taylor Swift. Not my pleasure but I can see why she's definitely one for this thread.
9.
I have a tragic soft spot for Taylor Swift. I'll get my coat...
Here it is.
10. Great work, given somewhat a challenge and rising to the occasion is what makes us better each time and you've certainly succeeded, sounds great. Reminds me of this track recorded live by The Fellowship with Seth Govan on bass. When I see him play it either makes me want to get on and practice or stick my gear on ebay. oh dear, ignore that file; how do you attach music?
11. I can't say how it compares with many other amps as I've not played through that many, but I can recommend you give a Streamliner a try. Lots of valves, mines a 900 and has power-a-plenty, is tiny and weighs little. It cost twice what I had budgetted for but I'm not regretting a penny at the moment. (I'm afraid its used with BF cabs, a Midget T and/or a Compact which seem to tick all your boxes, but you've dismissed them. Played an outdoor even on a pretty big stage the w/e with just the Midget. It won't cost you to send Alex an email and tell him what you want, he's about as impartial as a proprietor can be and knows about other cabs. Read his articles to help inform your decision whichever way you go.)
12. Anyway, Abba may not be considered 'cool' but they were certainly world class at what they did, especially those girls.
13. One I admit to no-one (except to the whole world on here) is 'The Organ Entertains' on radio 2. Listen on i-player most weeks. Absolutely no idea why, the music is often dreadful, I think its part fascination with these electro-mechanical organs - about which I know very little.
14.
I haven't read this thread for ages and look again today only to find that Status are still unfashionable....damn it! P.S. I don't play slap, am not particularly a Mark King fan and am not in the midst of a mid life crisis (to my knowledge ).
No need to worry, your Status and Warwick are balanced by the Stingray.
15. I'd try them out before committing with your drill as an American Jazz Deluxe has a shorter body than the 'normal' body and so might start looking a bit busy and with only a small gap for you to actually play. They are nice but there's a reason why most people took them off. In the old days, I suppose it had to do with a little bit of rebellion against 'smart' looking things (bit like boy racers taking hubcaps and bumpers off their cars when I was a lad).
16. Not quite the same but a little more interesting to learn from, Incognito, Brand New Heavies etc. Consider flats strings, also the use of harmony notes in place of roots, esp minor 3rd (if its a minor chord) and also let the snare 'breathe' more often, ie leave gaps on 2 and 4. Great thing to do, I've come the same route for the same reasons from a blues/rock background via funk. Very satisfying to play, as long as the rest of the band allow the same space as you do and can groove. (I often play with a keys player who fills EVERY gap. Frustrating!)
17. A friend of mine told me they come with an 18+ requirement. I've never had a chance to try one. I've always described my 'Ray as being like a big Cadillac; it's typically american, unnecessarily powerful and comfortable with every conceivable extra. I'm imagining a Mack truck.
18. He's also selling this; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MUSIC-MAN-MUSICMAN-SABRE-BASS-1979-EARLY-MODEL-RARE-NEAR-MINT-LEO-FENDER-/290742972921?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43b1a1b1f9 This I would love. But then I suppose I'd be too frightened to do much with it, but I'd love to have it. But when would I use it? I know but its beautiful and the sound... But I already have a pre-EB, but I've always wanted a Sabre. Yeah but...
19. Haven't read all thread, but I'm one of those who can't see why would a pub gig need anything different. Never had any threat of damage. It'd by my current 'go-to' bass which is a cooking (in the bog standard sense) Stingray I got from jcater on this list which I'm thoroughly enjoying. £6-700?
20. Very nice, catch Paul's show on I-player most weeks. Very jealous, sounds great fun! Well played.
21. Write to them, if the place was packed on Monday too they could afford to get in a live band or two. I love the Beatles, quite liked the one tribute act I've seen (on the same bill as my band), but more for appreciating their attention to detail in the music than enjoying other people singing Beatles songs.
22. A sing of the times? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2134905/Church-bell-chimed-world-wars-silenced-complaint-village-newcomer.html (Ok, I know its the Daily Mail, who had to mention 2 world wars...)
23. Just to add my own sadness, held Bob in very high regard, learnt a lot from his playing and he seemed such a genuinely nice fella. Really sorry, would have loved to have seen him play. I'll miss him.
