Pfft, melodrama. No-one is saying it's the end of the world - it's not the end of the world if one of my basses gets smashed to smithereens. It's not the end of the world if I die - doesn't mean I'll be happy about it, and if it's caused by stupidity, negligence or carelessness then it's utterly inexcusable in my book. Regarding the gig you mention - if only life was as perfect as that. You don't have to look far on here to find stories of complete lack of respect for gear that has been shared "for the good of the gig" (which could be interpreted as making up for people's shortcomings - you can imagine that I would view with some suspicion a tradesman who came to do a job for me asking to borrow some of the fundamental tools for the job because he didn't have them with him). But gear sharing is another "hot tattie" topic altogether.
Extremes again.

The strangest bass part I've ever had to play.
Our version of Paint it black for who it may concern :-)
Blimey! -
I think we should try to avoid extremes, it isn't between treating like glass or abuse, or between putting a glass on a cab and pouring beer down onto valves etc, no-one is going to do that, just being much more precious about the gear than we used to. (If a glass gets knocked on a cab you'll need a j-cloth, not the end of the world.) Fewer stickers, less lending, more wardrobes of guitars at home cased up in pristine but unplayed condition. Refreshingly I enjoyed a gig in Kent a short while back, several bands all with respect for each other sharing their gear (none pristine) without inhibition for the good of the gig. Nothing got damaged of course. Made for a good evening and without a guitarist/bass player attracting comments about his anality. I'm looking forward to the first dig in my new amp so I can enjoy using it.

Years ago equipment used by bands I used to see was always pretty tatty, well used and often had the band name stencilled on and plenty of stickers on guitars, amps etc. Nowadays, despite the relative cost of the gear being much lower, we seem to be much more materialistic and frightened to even pull off clear plastic protection (reference a member of this site asking whether to take off the US flag sticker from the scratchplate of his new Fender). This went recently on ebay and took me back to those times: you know the sort of thing: I know some will like to keep their expensive equipment pristine etc but this seems to be the norm nowadays but not so much in the past. There was another chap on here describing how he pulled the plug on someone who put a beer glass on his cab (isn't this where they always go? Tea mug in rehearsals). This is definitely not a criticism of at anyone at all, its just I found myself not liking the big advertising sticker which came on the top of my brand new and painfully expensive Streamliner amp and rather than screw it up into the bin, I put it on the bottom. Why did I do that? What am I scared of? Reduced resale? How much have a saved by doing that? Are we more precious than we used to be? Are these our tools or our precious pearls?
-
Fair enough, in which case we're all saying the same thing, using our ears is the best solution.
-
+1 for using your ears. If a cab is struggling turn down a bit and start saving. Otherwise you should be able to play on with no problem. Of course some people haven't benefitting from knowing about Bill Fitzmaurice and his expertise but I can't see how they are better off as a result.
I love what Duck does and how he really propels a song. It's interesting to watch his technique though. Thumb coming over the top of the neck. Lots of hand movement. Fretting fingers flailing away. Like many, I was taught to try and eradicate such 'bad' habits and to use minimal, economic movement, etc etc. So whay am I not a better player than Duck? Just goes to show, whatever works is whatever works...
Yes, but.... we do Green Onions as a 2nd half opener before the singers come on. Playing it as they do in F its a right old stretch on the left hand if you want no hand movement (which is always my own aim). Technique is relevant but not all-important to me, the violin style left hand (with thumb over the top) was driven out of me by my classical guitar teacher who whacked it with a ruler if it ever came over. Put me in good stead for my first Precision which had a much fatter neck than I was expecting. Entwhistle is describes as 'sloppy' in another thread because of this. I wonder if the person has been on so many world tours or ever back Sam & Dave? Anyway, this is my fave (although sound is poor but still get a jist of the screaming organ), such a simple tune but played with such commitment and gusto. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbBcXvKvB08

Best bargain, or has Ibanez been revealed? Some may think it worth the extra for that name on the transfer. Check out the Harley Benton speaker cabs and see if you think they make them for Hartke too. (eg compare their 2x10 with the Hartke 2.5XL - clearly different drivers but not much else).
Have you seen them? The Promethean has a lighter more refined construction whereas the RS is built like a tank.
No, just being provocative!

My money is on the cabs being identical.

American Jazz Deluxe, early version with the original John Suhr pups. Active electronics, original Schaller tuners, the extra fret(!), through-body stringing. Can read about their design and history here: http://en.wikipedia....n_Deluxe_Series Unusual bluey greenish colour - not Lake Placid blue which is a bit more blueish(!), not a refinish, I have seen two others, one a 5 string on a US site and the other went on ebay a month or so ago for (I think) £730 (I kept the pics for reference!). Weight is between 9-10lbs (on our bathroom scales). In excellent condition bar some very minor brushes (tried to show them on the bottom edge and end of the headstock). Wide range of sounds, from very powerful bass to a real snappy twang. Decided I want a Stingray, can't have both so; For sale - £[s]675 ovno [/s] £650 or make me an offer For Trade - Musicman Stingray with cash adjustment Message me for questions, extra pics etc, here's some: http://www.flickr.co...ers/6998614886/ http://www.flickr.co...ers/6998614362/ http://www.flickr.co...ers/7144698769/ http://www.flickr.co...ers/6998612362/ http://www.flickr.co...ers/7144697311/ http://www.flickr.co...ers/7144696465/ http://www.flickr.co...ers/6998610048/ http://www.flickr.co...ers/6998612352/

Barefaced Midget and Compact/GB Streamliner here. Care for nothing else. The Midget has coped with every situation (even if in my doubting way I've taken the Compact along too on a couple of occasions, unplugged it for a song or two for little difference in sound with just the Midget) just needs an amp with enough clean power to get the best out of it. Get the 'T' version. It doesn't give that foundation rumbling depth which can be so satisfying from huge speakers but I've found this also muddies up the overall sound and so get's taken out on the equaliser anyway.

The more I look, the more not for me.

4 Strings replied to SidVicious1978's topic in General Discussion
I'd like to put the 'nome on it, he's rock solid! The clapping is brilliant, seeing as he's got the bass drum going all the way through. -
Loverlee. Let us know how you get on with it in anger. Probably take a month to get used to it properly though. This is pro gear, don't see proper SVTs at pub gigs too often. You know its going to sound immense, they do! Just not so popular with band mates come loading/unloading time! Which bit of the logo, the red V?
Its like some kind of ghastly Dubai hotel edition. I'm disturbed to find myself quite liking it.
Heh! This and the Liberace thing, all it needs is a small candle holder on the end! Not me. I love Stingrays, there's something crudely utilitarian about them, strongly built, solid etc rather than ostentatious. For me, gold bits on them doesn't do it (even if it was JPS) and I feel disturbed at the thought processes at EB that would come up with this.
I posted this a couple of weeks ago in the hope that somebody on here would own up to it, but it's still funny (and a little bit relevant), so here it is again... Does this count or is there nothing new under the sun?
I'm waiting for developments on this here valvey B500 because it sounds wonderful, and failing that I think I'm going to look at the GK MBFusion which is a similar idea. You've piqued my interest, tho...
As I understand it the B500 is an all transistor micro amp. The hybrid valvey one is a one off and will not be micro.

1.5mm2 or 2.5mm2 - so difficult a choice!
Just thought it is worth saying about the internal cab cable, and then the two to the cone probably no more than 0.5mm. so don't get too hung up >>Too true! 4mm is the largest you can get into a speakon terminal. >>You can say that again!
