1. Ashdown ABM 500 III for sale £300 plus £20 P&P. Lovely loud ABM amp for sale. I now have my Ashdown MiBass lightweight head and can't justify keeping both of them. So my ABM must go to a new owner. Comes with footswitch. Specs from the Ashdown website are as follows. At 575 watts RMS the powerful and versatile Ashdown ABM 500 EVO III is the perfect amp head for those wanting faster transient attack, more headroom and low noise, along with extended sound-shaping options. The Ashdown ABM 500’s 7-band EQ is made up of three rotary controls, which offer 20dB of cut and boost at 60Hz, 660Hz and 5kHz, and four sliders giving 15dB of cut and boost at 180Hz, 340Hz, 1.3kHz and 2.6kHz. What’s more you can set your EQ, hook up a footswitch, and switch between a flat fretless sound and your EQ settings hands-free. The options don’t end there as the Ashdown ABM-500 Bass Head features a controllable compressor and a sub-harmonic generator. The generator reproduces your sound at an octave lower than the original signal and is dialled in with an additional rotary controller to give you everything from subtle thickness to bone crushing tone quickly and easily. Connectivity With the Ashdown ABM500 EVO III Head both passive and active instruments are supported via a single switchable input. Additionally the signal to the DI out can be cut to leave the tuner output live, for silent tuning. On top of this you also have a sub-bass output, FX loop and a line input.
2. An Allparts blocked neck cost about £380 new. For that you get the rest of the bass as well and a case. You'd have to provide the correct neckplate screws yourself of course. When you think about it it's a pretty good deal but I doubt he's get more than £380 because people don't like bitsa basses.
3. I would have preferred one of those washing machines he used to use. Mines on the way out.
4. Wish this had been for sale before I forked out £540 for mine. It won't be here for long. Have a bump.
5. Squier VM customer telecasters, which have two P90s in place of the usual single coils, sound great with an average secondhand price of about £140. I know some very good guitarists who own one. They come in black and butterscotch. Here's a review. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiwWeobS2xo
6. Memories......Davie Paton, from Pilot, is still doing his thing up here in Edinburgh and I fell in love with ONJ after hearing Sam as a nipper. Edit - and here he is showing that the bass wasn't just for show, he can really play it. 7. I like it, it's quirky (can't really hear the bass as it's not very high in the mix). I like the singing though and, other than the splash being a bit too loud, the drums have been recorded well.
8. Ashdown Classic Neo 115H bass cab for sale. Now I have my Barefaced Compact this cab is surplus to requirements. I've used it twice and it is in immaculate condition and comes with a padded cover. It's very light for it's size, is very loud and was made in the UK. I may be interested in trades, depending on what you have......try me. If you'd like to buy it's going for £250. I could deliver it within a reasonable distance of Edinburgh, where I'm based. Due to it's size postage would probably be at least £30. This is the blurb from Ashdown's site http://www.ashdownmu...tail.asp?ID=186 And this is what it would cost new http://www.gear4musi...a949240a1258a23
9. Is this your first bass? If it is you're best to buy secondhand and put the money you save towards a decent amp. A good bass will sound crap through a underpowered amp with farty speakers (I know because I've owned a few rotten amps).
10. I used to have super low action on my old Geddy Lee which would play great at home but sometimes, if the room I was playing in was was warm, the neck would move slightly and some notes would end up choking. After playing some other bassists instruments, I realised that it isn't a crime to like a higher action and it does give you a clearer sound without fret rattle. 5 mm is a little high for comfort though and I recommend a little tweak of the truss rod to get the neck a little straighter and allow you to get your strings a bit lower by a mm or two.
11. I got a neck from this seller. The good points were that it was slim, and straight. The bad points were that the nut had not been filed (which means you'd have to do it yourself or get a new one fitted) and the fretboard on the E string side had been over sanded between the 1st and second fret so it looked a bit lopsided. I've never had it on a bass because of the nut but suspect it would play all right if you sorted that out. Better message him first to make sure the nut is ok before you buy.
12. Go your own way has a great off beat bassline over the chorus.

Fave guitar solo?

Has to be Mick Ronson's solo from Bowies's Teenage Daydream. Shows it's not the notes you play but how you play them. The solo starts at 3.10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFDj3shXvco
14. Watch out. Sitting down can mean your wrist is in that nasty curled position. Which can cause all sorts of problems. I have carpal tunnel (which you don't want to get) and I recommend standing up when you're playing so that your wrist is as straight as possible.
15.
Ebay fees aren't applied to the P&P part, only the sale price, I believe..? We've all seen stuff being sold for £1, P&P £250..!
Ha, ha. it's not very subtle way of getting around the fees is it.
16. My MM SUB sounded great through everything. Whether it was my little Ashdown EB 150, my Fender TV15, Hartke Lh500 or even the crappy bass rig at whistlebinkies (whatever it was that night). So there must be something going on for your Markbass combo to sound so naff. The only amp that I disliked instantly was the TC electronic classic 450 I had for a short while. Other people love them I didn't. It may be a case of mutual incompatability with your Markbass and it's time to get yourself another amp.
17. Sometimes it due to lack of monitors and sometimes it's due to lack of ability. If the singer can hear themselves and they still sing out of tune then it's lack of ability and there's not much you can do. Simon Le Bon from Duran Duran couldn't sing to save his life and it didn't stop him.
18. I recently got my compact which I'm pairing with Ashdowns latest micro amp the MiBass. The MiBass has a very warm sound and was great through my Ashdown 1x15 neo cab but even better with the compact. I've never had a punchier sound and both my Jazzes sound fantastic through this combination. The MiBass has a very cunning semi parametric EQ. You pick the frequency with the knob and cut or boost that frequency with the slider. It's very simple and instinctive and makes getting the tone you want very easy. It uses the same power amp as all the other micro amps (Bang and Olufsen I believe). If you get the chance to try the MiBass it at your local music shop I really recommend it. Here's a thread on basschat all about it http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1679480
19.
Got a cab advertised on Gumtree and it was only on for a couple of hours or so before someone enquired. However the second message I got from the same chap has asked for my name and email address.....as gumtree conversations hide your details. Any body else find this as suspicious as me ? Maybe I'm just being paranoid but the person seems more interested in knowing who I am rather than what I'm selling.
Yes I had a few emails like that from a couple of people after I advertised on gumtree. Seemed weird so I ignored them. This is one of them - 'Thanks for the response, kindly get back to me with your email address and your full name and finally your last asking price so as to know whom am dealing with for further discussion.... Hope to hear from you soon...'
20. I find that if I just loosen my strings (so they're all floppy) for 24 hrs and then tune them up it makes a significant difference to the sound. They definitely get their twang back. Of course I don't have sweaty hands which helps me keep my strings sounding good for longer.
21.
It is a bit ambiguous, isn't it ? the whole thing does have implications for a few decisions. i.e. if I have a 300w 8ohm cab (say, a GS112), would that be enough to handle a 500w RMS amp @ 8ohms ? acknowledging that there will be peaks and boosting the lower frequencies may put a GS112 under strain. However, in general, would that be a reasonable idea ?
Be careful and use your ears to listen for distortion. At reasonable volume it should be ok.
22.
Yes, it would be correct that the RMS and peak figures are at minimum load, as for the ohmage situation. On the majority of amps you can expect 50-70% of the quoted specs for 4 ohms, so with a 500w it's usuallly around 300w, as far as i know. Some amps are different, like the Orange Terror Bass says it's 500w at both 4 and 8 ohms, but it's 500w at 8 ohms and something in the region of 520-530 at 4 ohms. In the first example, the figures given are likely RMS as well. Liam
Bit of confusion here. The higher the resistance (impedance) of the cab in ohms the less you'll get out of your amp. I have a 500w ABM and if I hook it up to a 4 ohm cab (which is the minimum resistance it is designed for) I will get the full 500 watts of power from the amp. If I hook it up with an 8 ohm cab I will get less power - about 350 watts (and less volume). Seach for posts by Alex Claber who makes barefaced cabs and he will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about impedance of cabs and it's relationship with loudness.
23. Another bump for a beautiful bass.............sigh.
24. Remember to detune the string you are adjusting the intonation on, to ensure that the saddle has room to move. You sometime have to move the saddle quite a distance. Really the shop should have sorted this for you before they sold it to you.
