When you think you may have too much gear......?
gjones replied to ossyrocks's topic in General Discussion
I used to be in four bands playing different genres which I saw as a good excuse to accumulate gear for different scenarios/genres. Now I only play in one band and the majority of venues I play provide a decent backline. I have sold a few of my basses but still have seven electric basses, two combos, three cabs, three heads, plus a DB I never play. In reality I could live with the my Barefaced Compact cab plus head and two basses. Will I sell all my other stuff? Hmmmmm.... -
The parametric mid control on the Z7 will come in very handy.

I feel your pain Sometimes I think that the others in the band purposely pretend they haven't got a lead for their guitar, or an extension lead, or a spare set of strings, or tape, or a battery, or a phillips screwdriver, just to make me feel useful for saving the day.......yet again.

Bands you love but dislike one or two of their songs a lot
gjones replied to JottoSW1's topic in General Discussion
I like Tom Waits but went off him when he started growling though a mouthful of broken glass. I liked his earlier period when his songs were jazzier and I could actually make out what he was saying. -
Those are iconic songs with some classic and tasteful bass playing. Nice to put a face to the basslines.

Oooh I said 4 but I've just remembered another one (or two). 3 cabs, 3 heads, two combos. And a guitar combo. Pretty weird really, when the majority of my gigs have rigs supplied????

I like a dark sounding pickup on a Jazz but I bought one of these and it was too dark and I ended up having to sell it on. It might be what you're looking for. https://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/jazz-bass-hum-canceling/dimarzio-model-j

The Supremes version is not so fiddly. It was the Funk brothers playing on it but it doesn't sound like James Jamerson (then it would be fiddly but in a good way). It sounds like the bass was played with a pick, so may have been Carol Kaye. The Rod Stewart version has a bassline that is extremely fiddly, so stay away from that one.

I have an Elite Precision (introduced after the Deluxes and before the new Ultra) which has a wheel, at the body end of the neck, to adjust the truss rod. It's just like the one found on Musicman basses and makes it very easy to adjust when needed. I do wonder why they went back to the old truss rod adjuster?

I believe so as there were lots of complaints about how hot it was.
-
The SUB that Mr Lobster upgraded was one with the original pickup in it. They, originally had very powerful pickups in them that were too hot for some people. The Ray4 SUB I have is the later model which has a pickup with a lower output and sounds excellent to my ears. I compared both the SUB and my USA Stingray, when I first bought it and they sounded very similar but I prefer the SUB because its Jazz neck means it's nicer to play.

I've walked out of gigs, by my favourite bands, that have gone on too long. I guess I have a short attention span.

I used to be in a band where the front man was addicted to the love he got from an audience. He'd make the band go on for ever until the crowd got sick of us. I say, Keep em wanting more. Anything more than a one and a half hour set, or two 45 min sets, is indulgence on behalf of the band. Anything more than that and both the band and the audience start to get weary.

I'm the same, I wasn't too keen on my USA Stingray neck. I saw a really good deal on a B stock, Sterling SUB Ray4, with a Jazz style neck (the cheapest model made in Indonesia) and bought it. When I got it I was really pleasantly surprised how much I loved the neck and the classic 2 band EQ. The USA Stingray has now been sold and the Ray4 is a keeper.

I saw my bass on Ebay, for sale, a couple of years ago. Interestingly, it was an Edinburgh seller and they were very near me. I'd bought the bass from Bass Direct and the seller had used the old website picture. Maybe it was because he had one similar for sale and was too lazy to take a picture of it, but I messaged to tell him he was using a picture of my bass and he ended the sale.

Bought the 350 watt TV15 as soon as they came out. The 6 ft six delivery man refused to deliver it when he found out I lived 3 floors up. I had to go and pick it up from the depo. Loved it, as it was a beautiful looking thing, but that silly handle made it extremely difficult to carry anywhere, especially up 3 flights of stairs. I loved the look on the face of the guy who bought it from me. He gave me the cash before he tried to pick it up. I could see he was having second thoughts but he wasn't getting that money back. Get the little one with the 10 inch speaker if you are just going to use it as a home combo.

You're not the only one but I've found that if I want to play bass in a long term band then those are usually the rules. Of course I could start my own band as the singer......
-
You can't make a singer sing a song they don't want to sing. All the successful bands that I ever joined weren't democracies. It was the singers band and we played what the singer wanted to play. That was the 'unwritten' contract we signed up to. The democratic bands I have been in were all complete failures, because band members would suggest songs and would get cheesed off when they were ignored.

String gauge drop / Lighter gauge strings
gjones replied to BassAdder60's topic in Accessories and Misc
I bought a Precision bass with 45-100 Elixirs and they sounded great, so bought a set for my Jazz. The lower gauge than standard means it's slightly easier to play as well, as I feel there's less tension in the string. No loss in heft either, I definitely haven't turned into a twang monster. -
Laney just isn't very sexy for some reason......but whenever I've played through one in rehearsal rooms, or when supplied as backline at a gig, I've always been impressed by how much clean volume they put out. I'm mostly using my Markbass combo these days and still own GK heads and Barefaced cabs but would have no problem swapping them for a Laney combo if all my sexier gear got nicked at some point in the future.

That's Dave. He works down the local chip shop. One eye, got a limp, smells of vinegar. You must know Dave?

Having had issues with previous cheapo Fender leads, I forked out for their deluxe lead. It's pretty robust and I like the way it's quite stiff and will only coil one way. The 'tweed look' outer sleeve is pretty ragged, after a couple of years use, but it still does the job.

Cheap Markbass CMD 121P combo. Bargain for somebody.
gjones replied to gjones's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Hmmmm.......you're right. Apologies to anybody who had put an offer in, hoping to get a cheap Markbass combo, I might have mucked things up for you 🫤 -
These are great little combos, that are light and loud. It's 15 years old but owner says it has been serviced recently. Presently going for £118. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166843283112?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D777008%26algo%3DPERSONAL.TOPIC%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20240131095853%26meid%3Ddea41da96a7341fd988e9e52c4958a14%26pid%3D101949%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26itm%3D166843283112%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D4375194%26algv%3DRecentlyViewedItemsV2%26brand%3DMarkbass&_trksid=p4375194.c101949.m162918&_trkparms=parentrq%3A87274e4f1900a55f1632d9cafffeb682|pageci%3A82ee8e8d-3b71-11ef-aefc-3eb8cb951d7b|iid%3A1|vlpname%3Avlp_homepage
