Tomorrow's rehearsal cancelled as the father of our singist and drummist has passed away. I'm expecting next weekend's gig to be postponed as well, but obviously there are more important things in life than that.

I came across Newtone through Jon Gomm who recommended them for his acoustic set. I have a set on my acoustic guitar now and they sound great, even on a cheapy Indonesian Fender. Well, five of them do as I managed to snap one when installing them (the perils of being a bass player who can be a bit rougher, I guess) so one is a used Ernie Ball, but it all adds to the character or something.

My old Squier VM 70s Jazz was made of soft maple and was so heavy small objects would orbit it. In reality it was probably somewhere in the 10-11lb (4.5-5kg) range and it was pretty heavy, but as I weigh over 300lb an extra pound isn't really noticeable when I'm playing standing up. "Too heavy" is all relative, YMMV, etc.

Hi Beams are round core, n'est-ce pas? I think the Diamond in stainless with round cores is the nearest equivalent.

It's been years since I last used Rotos but I recall sandpaper being smoother than their strings...

I can't give you technical reasons, all I know is that, after years of trying different brands (Rotosound, Ernie Ball, D'Addario) the first time I tried a set of their strings my P-bass sounded exactly like I thought it should. I haven't looked back since. I'm still digging D'Addario strings on my Sire, but I'm keen to try Newtone strings on it at some point. They aren't the cheapest but they certainly aren't outrageously priced, and I'm happy to pay a little extra to support a British company that makes a quality product.

Possibly as part of a ply arrangement rather than just a sheet of balsa?

Using my MS Paint-fu it looks like a) the bridge is wonky, but rotating it clockwise about the centre screw should solve that one, and b) that the pickups and pickguard want rotating the other way about the truss rod adjustment wheel.

Interesting with the V3 the preamp is listed as "no mid frequency" but there is a mid control. I assume this means no sweepable mids as there is with the Z7. Also crikey, that's some poor alignment going on there.

Another vote here for it being the bridge being misaligned. Given the body would probably have been cut and routed using a CNC machine I think it's unlikely the pickups would be off, and the strings look slightly out on the neck as well. I imagine this will be relatively easy to remedy but it's still annoying.

I've heard some demos of Bare Knuckle bass pickups and they sounded very tasty. They're more known for their guitar pickups but worth looking into, and based in Cornwall.

I suspect this is a result of both inflation and them artificially suppressing prices during the pandemic when every man and their dog was thinking about learning to play an instrument while stuck at home.

Oh certainly, as well as other factors such as inflation, the myth of "vintage" instruments being better than modern ones, etc.

"Decent" is very subjective though. You could buy what I consider to be a "decent" bass for a hell of a lot less than £1200.

Does iTunes still force you to reformat MP3s to whatever format iPhones use?
