  1. I'm quite partial to the CAR/tort combo so that gets my vote.
  2. Starts considering which kidney to sell... Such a shame I'm tapped out at the moment as I'd love this (plus, as a West Kirby native, it'd be good to have a trip back to the Wirral to see how much more of it is covered by retirement flats...). Come on, the lottery win! GLWTS!
  3. It was very similar to that, but it had a P neck pickup
  4. Played a set at the wedding of our guitarist yesterday. Tiny back of a barn so my ABM and Two10S were probably overkill (going to just use the Elf next time in a similar setting, I think), but got some nice compliments on my playing and it was a lot of fun, especially as we got the groom up to play a few of our easier songs. The other band playing did their first set as an Oasis tribute but then did some awesome covers for their second set. Being the nerd that I am I was pleased to see their bassist using a Barefaced cab, but the One10, which was surprisingly loud but struggled a little against two guitars. He was also playing an unusual Fender bass which looked like an Aerodyne but with a pickguard and a control plate – any ideas?
  5. I'd be tempted to just play the open string while having a drink or scrolling on my phone, but would probably try and make it like I was interested.
  6. I've just been in exactly the same position as you and went for the Elf. I don't regret my decision one bit, it sounds lovely.
  7. If you're just beginning and have a really tight budget then you're unlikely to get anything particularly quality brand new, so start looking secondhand. I hate to sound opportunistic but I actually have a cracking secondhand practice amp for sale on here (click on "Trace Elliot Boxer 65" in my signature) which, as it appears you're in my area you're welcome to try, but it will good for home practice, coffee shop gigs, etc. That would leave you £220 for a bass, cables, etc. This package from Thomann would give you what you'd need to complete a very basic setup: https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_pb_20lh_sbk_bundle_set.htm Your can buy clip-on tuners cheaply, and you can experiment with plectrums, strings, etc in due course.
  8. Time for a letter to Dave Grohl? https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/mar/24/dave-grohl-writes-to-cornwall-council-to-allow-local-band-to-practise
  9. Anyone else getting flashbacks of The Mary Whitehouse Experience?
  10. Based solely on the bridge it's a 1st Gen, 2nd Gen have the hand-me-up bridge from the V3 (which is still decent to be fair).
  11. That was also a possibility for me
  12. I think mine will mainly be used to avoid having to drag my ABM to rehearsals
  13. There was some provocation though, I believe. For once we weren't just being bloodthirsty colonisers 😂
  14. I'm happy to meet halfway if it helps, Manchester isn't that far away from me.
  15. Personally I can't stand anything in my ears, eg earbuds, and on the few occasions I have tried them they've had a tendency to fall out. Think I'll be sticking to an old school approach for the foreseeable future.
  16. It's definitely a mood improver for me too. When I was in the depths of depression a few years ago one of the signs of how bad things were was that I didn't want to pick up a bass. Thankfully those days seem to be behind me for now.
  17. If you're playing covers you have more licence to add your own embellishments than if you were in a tribute band where you'd be looking to stick as closely to the original as possible.
  18. Ah, if this had been available a week ago I might have a different new gear post just gone up. GLWTS!
  19. Yeah, when I decided I was going to bite the bullet and get a backup amp, based on reviews and personal recommendations there was only ever going to be one choice to be honest. I've only had the chance to play it through headphones so far but I'm excited to get it loud.
  20. Yesterday was Happy New (Backup) Amp Day for me! It will probably do me for any gigs in smaller or less salubrious venues as well, but even as a backup it'll do nicely for letting me hear myself on stage while being able to DI out to the PA - last time I had to DI out was when the amp blew, and we had no monitors so I could barely hear myself, so definitely don't want to be in that position again! Initial indications are that this is a cracker, and I can't wait to try it out with the band at rehearsal on Sunday!
  21. Yeah, he told me he only works two days a week, and that he'd do the work he and I had discussed for free if he was in the workshop on his own on a weekend and he was bored.
