1. I own several markbass 500w heads and use a 4 ohm std104hf which delivers any tone you want it to. MB gear tends to be fairly transparent so if you want SVT tones you will need something like a tech21 vt pedal. I have a pair of ae112 which are great but for more power the 104hf is the best IMO. (Not for small pub gigs unless you want to blow the windows out though! )
2. True, but I never needed more than the 410, it's a monster! 2 x 210 is the most flexible, but the STD102HF is a more beefy alternative to the traveller.
3. The best cab by far that I have used with my LM3 is a 4 ohm STD104HF. Massive SPL!!!!
4. Current LM3 has the same class D power amp as the Big Bang. This was confirmed to me by Markbass.
5. I gigged hartke xl cabs for 15 years and loved that powerful delivery but got tired of the weight. The hydrive 410s are great light weight cabs and are cheap second hand. Don't see many for sale on here though.
6. Is there a photo of the front of the headstock please? Thanks.
7. Does it have a case? Thanks.
8. When you say 'headroom' do you really mean more volume? If you use two 8 ohm 2x12 cabs the volume would be much more than with a single 2x12. I have a 4ohm 410 and the LM3 drives it to huge volume no problem. Is your cab 4ohm?
9. Thanks for the update. It's strange that you heard chuffing even though you opened the hole to allow the horn to fit flush. To be honest, at the high sound levels I use the combo plus NY121 at, I won't hear a bit of air escaping around the horn.
10.
That's a really good combo, I love the Evo III is it the MAG or the ABM? Even with ear bleeding punk it should keep up. You're not standing too close to it are you? Steve
You haven't answered this question fully Does it say MAG600 on the front of the amp? Is the amp front panel painted blue or silver. I have owned both ABM and MAG amps and they are very different in terms of their 'flat' EQ sound. The ABM has both valve and solid state pre amp section. The MAG is SS only and very clean. The ABM also has a shape button which you need to push in to turn it off ( which seems the wrong way round to me) which adds bass and reduces mids. Turning the shape off should help you get more perceived volume. If you really want to add another cab get an Ashdown 410 from the same model series as your combo. That will be much much better than a 15 and will be loud enough for any occasion. Hope this helps.
11. New LM3s are class D. They have the same power section as the Big Bang head. Buy a second hand SA450 which sounds like a LM but with parametric mids.
12. Take a look at how I installed the HT30 in my combo earlier in this thread (post #26). This will allow you to hear the difference without filing either the combo or HT30.
13. Using two of them should get you close to the 104HF which is the best cab I have owned. They are quite big for a 210 though, which is probably why they sound much more meaty than the traveller series. If I had the space I would get 2 102HFs and use one or both depending on the gig. The older version had ports top and bottom front. I don't know if they are better than the newer bottom only ported version?
14.
I have disconnected the tweeter on mine and I'm so pleased to have got rid of that annoying hissing.....are there any other alternative horns that could be fitted other than the HT30????? I don't mind spending a few extra £££ to get the best result!
It's not so much about the money but the available space for a replacement tweeter. The HT30 is a good alternative that will fit without any mod to either the combo or HT30. For the low cost it's worth trying one to see what you think. I found the piezo really spitty and annoying and the HT30 sounds good IMO. YMMV.
15.
Not a problem , just pointing it out!
Absolutely right to . It was Gareth who thought it may be a problem.
16. The bridge needs a very simple adjustment. The bridge saddles are vintage threaded so the strings should be reseated so they are more evenly spread. This would bring the g string back onto the fret board. I don't think that there is a problem here.
17. I have an SR1200 and the Nordstrands and onboard EQ make it the pick of the range. So if you want a modern 5er my money would go on a secondhand one no question.
18. Greg has just sold me his 2012 USA Jazz. A great guy who kept me regularly updated throughout the shipping process and even popped a brand new set of SS Rotosounds in the case which was a lovely surprise. The bass was exactly as described, extremely well packed in a Gibson cardboard box (care of Nigel at PMT Birmingham - cheers mate) and I would recommend him as a trustworthy and generous Basschatter. Trade without any worries.
19. If you want new and don't need headphone out or aux in then the LM3 is a good choice. If you are happy to go used then I would choose LM3 or SA450 or LMT500. The new power amp used in new LM3 and Big Bang heads does sound warmer to my ears than the F500 class d.
20. I like all of the suggestions with the exception of the fling it out of the bedroom window one!! When I was a lad I worked in a green grocers and more than once exotic spiders would cadge a lift to the UK in banana boxes, so watch out Greg!
