We never had a tip jar until things opened up again after the Covid closures. There usually is a cover charge at the door , and people are now encouraged to tip as well. It can make quite a difference.

I picked up a Gretsch hollow body last December. It’s become my go to. I spend a lot of my practice time playing it. It does have a big body. It’s the G5123B model , a Korean made bass with TVJones pickups. Wonderful woody tone.

Who has a killer bass that they've neglected for one reason or another?

Playing mostly shortscales so I have some classics that are not getting played much. -
I was going to mention the Longhorn too. light , sound great , serious fun to play

They’re up to $949 Cdn at L&M today , when they first were reissued in 98 they were $399. I just advise people to pick one up if you see it for a good price. If you don’t like it you can easily sell for what you paid. But most I know that have picked them up hang on to them.

Shortly after the Gretsch arrived , last December. My favourite dive downtown. -
My Longhorn has the original factory strings , it’s from the early Korean run when they were introduced. So since sometime around 98. The Shinkos do not have serial numbers anywhere. The strings are dead. But do have a wonderful woody old school thump. I remember how zingy they were when I was first playing it , but that’s long gone. I have a LaBella Dano set ready in case I lose a string. Until then , the factory rounds are staying on. I have two other short scale Dano basses , a Chinese 56 Dolphin Nose , and a recent Korean short scale DC. They both have LaBella Deep Talking flats. The Longhorn is still my favourite.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
msb replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Many hollow body basses have the bridge set in from the edge of the body , so despite the short scale they are a larger instrument. Try one. -
Re-tubed Monique , I had picked it up used and had no idea how old the tubes were. Noticed a difference in the way the eq responded. And tried out some different cabs. So I’m very glad I did it. The clear winner for cabs was my 112 Bergantino.
-
Check the firmware updates , that’s loaded with bells and whistles. And is a beauty. I originally picked up a Bergantino cab. And understood that Bergantino really do make beautiful gear. Wasn’t long before I became a fanboi. Bought another cab , and then decided that I really should try his amp. no regrets

I’m in the midst of trying to buy an expensive Duo Jet. -
The Forte is simple clean transparent power. I have the older version with a built in compressor rather than the drive. But you can add any gain stage or preamp to your taste. Although there is a more powerful version available the standard Forte packs some serious slam.

There was a Harley Benton hollow body that looked quite similar to the Eastwood Classic series , but was much cheaper. Two pickups. I picked up a Classic IV several years back on kijiji for a good price. Good bass for the money. The HB looked like a deal. I like shortscale hollow bodies. -

I hope they do not have a single pickup at the fretboard. -
Sometimes you pack the room , sometimes it’s quiet.

The Bamp is not on the website. Jim changes his lines frequently. I’m running an old school tube pre with my Forte now. It’s sounding delicious.

I had seen a photo of a modified short scale Ibanez Talman and quite liked the look. So when one turned up on kijiji I picked it up. This was going to be my first mod project. It was heavier than the basses I mostly use , and had a big chunky neck , that had a tendency to dive … after playing it for a while I got quite comfortable playing it. Now I quite like it. It just goes to show you can get used to almost anything if you just spend a little time on it. -
I have two older Rics. They’re a little more to set , but once adjusted are incredibly stable. They both have the original bridges. Both have very slight lift and are a bit of a misery to adjust. Once set , they’re fine. I’ve had my 4001 for around 27 years and only had to adjust it twice. The adjustments were minimal. I’ve only adjusted my 4000 once , but I haven’t had it as long. I think I just had to tweak one saddle on the 4000 when I set it.

I’m always learning different stuff. First I roughly write down the form … intro , A part , B part , chorus , bridge , outro etc. and then work out the various bits , and write them out. After I’ve got the form and the parts down it’s straightforward . If there are variations in the parts I write them out , and note that in the form. Some notes can be brief , others can get complicated. Then it’s simple repetition until it’s committed to memory. I prefer to memorize then be staring at my charts and notes. Sometimes I will need the notes.
