I bought a number of things on TalkBass where the ad said “continental US only” , and after asking the sellers were willing to ship to Canada. But the exchange , shipping , and duties seriously jack the cost up.

Musicians develop quite an odd memory. I’ll lose someone’s name while I’m still shaking hands but I can file away changes and form , even when playing something off the cuff that I do not know.

The neck is substantial on a Talman. I saw some mods someone had done and decided it would be a fun project. I still plan to change the tuners and the pots. It has some weight , and the neck is somewhat chunky , but it’s enjoyable to play. I liked the body shape , it reminded me of the Combo guitars Paul Barth designed for Rickenbacker in the late 50’s. -
They’re always changing things. Been doing that forever. It gives the fanatics something to obsess about. I love a nice Ric , and still get a little weak in the knees when I see one. I do think the new ones are among the best they’ve ever made.

I have four basses with the classic three point bridge , and have replaced three of them. I should confess that I was always able to set the 3 points exactly where I wanted things , but thought the Hipshots looked much better. (I suppose that makes me shallow) On the other hand it’s much easier to palm mute , and they are much simpler to set up , with much more control. -
I listen to the material several times before I pick up the bass. And then chart it out , and then write out specific parts , and finally the form. At first I’ll play along to what I’ve written , but try to become familiar enough not to rely on paper prompts. If I find a part that’s difficult , then I go to work on it. I have a considerable amount of material to memorize for three projects. I’m quite comfortable learning new things. Much of that time is spent with headphones.

We played at the school when I was in Grade 7. We were awful , but didn’t know any better.

It’s not going to ship until the 20th , I’m trying to be patient. It will be mostly used as a rehearsal cab , but I’ll certainly drag it out to the in-law’s where I keep the Exponent and try it. The tiny Phil Jones cab will probably remain there. It’s perfect there. I’ve been using an Ampeg 210AV for rehearsals , this will replace that. Also curious to hear it with the little Aguilar head. The 210 is easy to move but I’m looking forward to hauling around the One ten. My gigging rig is not going to change.

I’m mostly looking at an old school rich thump , I’m accustomed to having good tone. (to my tired old ears anyway) I have dedicated practice and gig rigs so this will be for transport to rehearsals. Oh at first I‘ll be trying various amp combinations and getting a handle on it. But once I’ve spent that time it should pretty much just become the rehearsal cab. I’ve been using an Ampeg 210 VR for that.

Barefaced cabs are not often seen on this side of the pond. One came up locally last summer , a compact 12 , a friend snagged it and I was seriously impressed with it. I’ve been running Berg cabinets with my gig rig , and I liked that Barefaced cab. Herself is fine with me buying basses or amps , but she just thinks of cabs as big black boxes. And believes I already have enough. It looks like I’ve snagged a One 10 cab from a seller in Quebec for a good price. This will be mostly dragged off to rehearsals. So I’m looking for something small that sounds good. It will be getting dragged out for weekly rehearsal. Looking forward to hearing this.

Great mod platform too. The neck is fairly chunky though. … but I like it.

Some are good players , and a couple are great ones. All with very different touch. I generally set my basses medium low , not super low , so they are not going to buzz if somebody has an aggressive approach. The bass amp is not in the PA at the jam so the stage mix is what you hear out front. And you are expected to sit in the mix. Not too loud , but very present. And there is a very different sound from different players.

I spend most of my playing time on my practice rigs , and have two. As we help my mother-in-law I have one at her place , it gets the most use. I wanted something small , to be used at a quiet volume. And it has evolved over the last three years. I have a (new to me) Phil Jones Bighead headphone amp for learning new material , and a little Darkglass e500 into a Phil Jones C2 cab. The e500 has a software suite with about two dozen pedals and effects in it. So it’s fun. Home is a simple Aguilar 350 plugged into a SL112. I do not turn it up much. Although I could certainly rattle the neighbour’s windows if I wanted to. I keep my practice rigs totally self contained so I don’t have to touch anything when I throw the gig rig in the car for the drive downtown. Three very different sounding rigs , but I appreciate that they are quite different. And have other amps and cabs that occasionally get brought out and plugged in , but I should trim those down.

It’s quite amazing how our individual touch changes the sound of an instrument. I’m in the house band for a weekly blues jam and have no problem letting other players use my stuff. So four different players might well be using the same bass and amp , with the same settings in the run of a night. And each person will sound completely different.

I’m quite fussy about note duration. Often palm mute , but I generally try to keep a little space between the notes.

I looked at Monique for years before I finally picked one up. At first I thought the bamboo box was the one , but the more I looked at the birdcage , the more I realized it was the one for me. No regrets after getting it , it completely changes the character of the Forte , I go in the effect return and really just use the back end. I love what it does. While I was waiting for mine to arrive I mentioned in another forum that one was on the way , and quickly got an email from Jule himself. He thought he might have lost an order and wanted me to know that he would “make everything ok”. I told him that I had found a used one , and he said I could have kept him going for a while there … So I like Jule. On one gig a while back I somehow forgot to pack Monique. I was fine just running the Forte for the night , but really missed how Monique changes things. I haven’t forgotten her since.

I have a couple of practice rigs , but this is where the BigHead will mostly reside. I use headphones when I’m playing along with a tablet , either picking up new material or just refreshing it. When it’s my happy time to goof around I like to use an amp. Usually a Darkglass e 500 into a little Phil Jones C2 cab. This is an enjoyable little low volume rig. And small.

I was totally happy before adding the preamp. And then everything shifted.

I have a small collection of amps and cabs. For gigs I’ve been happily using Bergantino for about the last three years , and then last January added a tube preamp. My sound completely changed , and I love it. Funny because I had never been happier about things before I picked up the pre.
