Show us your rig of choice for the weekend ** Basschat edition**
msb replied to bassace97's topic in Amps and Cabs
I usually practice at a very quiet volume , and love playing around with the software and a tablet with the Darkglass e500. I should try Monique through the regular amp input there. Sometimes I do run her through that little GK MB150 combo through the effect return. And sometimes through the Headlite. She’s quite subtle at very low volume. Much of my recent practice time is taken up memorizing a night’s material for a little mostly instrumental project we’re working on. That’s usually done with headphones and that tiny Hotone. I never thought I’d spend the amount of time on that Hotone as I do. Monique shines at rehearsal and gig levels. And completely transforms my hifi Berg head into an old school tube sounding rig. But one with 700 watts at 4 ohms. Or 500 watts with a single cab. And I don’t have to lug around a ninety pound tube head. -

This is what Gibson EB0 basses looked like before they switched over to the SG style in 1961. The shape was from the LesPaul Jr guitars that were made after 1958. This looks like an updated take on a classic design to me. -

This is my little corner at the in-law’s , we spend much of our time there looking after my mother-in-law. I have another little practice rig at home , and then there’s the gigging gear … I’m kinda nerdy about amps and stuff. And I’m hooked on kijiji , I’ve picked up some great things there. Last weekend a slightly older Berg cab went for just under $400. That was a deal! -

JPJ (I managed to get it for $100 Cdn on kijiji) It’s quite a nice little head , but It’s pretty crammed in there. They should have given it a slightly bigger box , but at the time they were obsessed with miniaturization. The only catch with some SWR amps is that some parts are no longer available , so they can be difficult to repair. That said , they were quite famous for being very reliable , and everything in mine works just as it should. They put a lot of stuff in that little head. -

It’s a crime that Gibson discontinued their little DC Jr Les Paul bass , but this pushes many of those buttons despite being a bolt on neck. I’m one that appreciates two knob simplicity and a single big humbucking pickup in the classic sweet spot. And I like the push/pull feature , although I rarely use it on my Jr. I would probably prefer the mahogany body because I love the Jr. I’ve pretty much become a short scale guy , and it’s nice to see something like this. I’m good for now , but wouldn’t be surprised to see one at my door sometime in the future. I like the promise of this bass , and this demo vid is excellent! -

I’m back to the practice rig for several days , much of the time will be using headphones and the little Hotone amp , but this morning for a change fired up the HeadLite. It’s not a bad little head , sounds fine at low volume with the little PhilJones C2. Spending a surprising amount of time playing the HiFlier. -
I liked the Jr so much I bought an SG. Now the SG is a nice bass , but it’s no Jr.

They’ve been discontinued , so if you see one grab it. When they first came out it immediately pushed a lot of my buttons. But I felt it was a bit pricey for what is really a budget instrument. That said … mine is easily one of my favourite things to play. It’s light , balanced , sounds great , fun to play. It’s a great little bass. I bought it from the States when they had some blowout sales going on and there were some issues when it arrived. I didn’t want to deal with long distance cross border hassles so I filed the sprouting frets , placed a heavier foam under the pickup and set the action to my preferences. And discovered that it was a really nice little bass. With a double coil pickup in the sweet spot they work much like the classic Pbass , and your hand position will determine how it sounds. And with two knob simplicity you’re not distracted by the knobs. All business. Whenever I pick mine up it simply feels like home. My only complaint was not buying one sooner. So … if you see one. Grab it.

I’ve been using one at home , fairly quiet practice levels , and occasional rehearsal (louder). It’s not a bother to lug around. Good cab , but not a great one.

Welcome Oog. Keep track of where the exits are , keep an eye on your drink , and keep your derrière to the wall. It’s just like every other place.

Those little MB200s are great little amps. I was using one at home for practice and the fan stopped working. I didn’t realize it at the time , the Ice power module had a meltdown and the pink ring of doom appeared. I looked around for a replacement and decided it really was the perfect little rig for my requirements at the time , so I was going to try and get it fixed , or replace it with another if that did not work out. Some say that you just throw out mini Class D heads when they break down … I used a qualified repair person, and today the amp works perfectly. And I like to hear fans working… -

Is that a GR Bass carbon 212 cab? How do you like it? -
No , I was referring to the guys we used to do gigs with. A B3 with a Leslie cabinet took up a lot of space , and was heavy. Really heavy. Inevitably the organ player had a bad back and everyone else would have to help lift it.

I’ve been waiting for the new edition of Doug Tulloch’s book on Danelectros , in fact I generally email him about twice a year to enquire … he’s delved into the Evets Danos and I’m really curious to see what he’s found. When I ask in the summer he tells me he’s hoping to have it ready for Christmas , when I ask around Christmas he tells me he’s aiming for the summer. I know there was a Pro batch without tape , but those had different tuners and metal adjustable tuners. They’ve done so many runs from quite a number of different factories … god only knows. -

I have an old friend that used to play in the roots scene around Toronto , when he first heard about Jerry Jones he immediately phoned. Jerry said there was a number available in the shop , so he hopped on his motorcycle and drove to Nashville. Came back with a black one. We compared them , and there certainly was a difference , but I’ve always been content with my Shinko. There was a stronger midrange in the Jones , definitely hotter pickup , the Korean one was closer to the original specs. Around town here , if you go see a blues or roots band you’re as likely to see a Longhorn as you are a Pbass. Surprising number of players with them ! -

I immediately ordered the shortscale DC when they became available , and then had to wait about ten months for mine to arrive. The beauty of the Longhorn is its size , the bridge is right at the body edge. This time they took the DC body and moved the bridge a couple of inches forward and put on a 24 fret short scale neck. So it’s similar in size to the single cut 56 Series. It is much larger than the Longhorn despite being the same scale. It doesn’t sound like the Longhorn , but it does have an interesting woody tone. I like it. I replaced the adjustable metal bridge with a Jerry Jones popsicle stick bridge (courtesy of a Dano friend on TB) , for me they sound better , and there is a sweet spot for the wooden bridge where the intonation is fine. (and it doesn’t take long to position it) I strung mine with LaBella flats. Still the original strings and bridge in the pic. -
In the old days it the guys playing Hammond organs that had the bad backs …

I used to be a regular Pbass kinda guy , and then started using Rics. When the first Dano reissues appeared I was excited because I had always wanted a Longhorn , but they were not common around here. So I was happy to see the reissues. The only problem was I wasn’t crazy about the short scale. I got one , and it was fun , incredibly light , and surprisingly versatile. The next thing I knew it had become my main bass. I don’t quite understand just how that happened , but I’ve come to accept it. Danos are weird little things , Nathan Daniel wanted to make cheap playable instruments that anyone could afford. He cut every imaginable corner to keep the costs down. These originals were made in the Neptune NJ factory , by New Jersey housewives with little to zero woodworking experience. They did ok. The reissues were surprisingly true to the originals , except they had adjustable truss rods , Daniel felt the adjustable truss rod was the weakest part of guitar design. He used two steel T shaped rods that were not going to shift. They did a great job of re-engineering the legendary lipstick pickups. And they made the body using a wooden frame and glueing Masonite to it. Genius! I’m still not sure if the Longhorn is cool as heck , or butt ugly. And I’m ok with that too. -

There is a sweet spot for that wooden bridge where the intonation is fine. Those wooden bridges sound better than the adjustable metal ones do. With those early reissues you have to remove the neck to adjust the trussrod , it’s a good thing they tend to be stable , I’ve only adjusted mine once in twenty four years. edit … I’d bet someone removed the tape before you got it. I’m pretty sure it left Korea with tape. -

They were made in various factories , it started in Korea with the Shinko factory in 98 ,I think they moved to another factory before moving to China , and now they’re back in Korea. So they’re all over the map. That first batch from the Shinko factory are said to be the best , and they do fetch a premium price. My Longhorn is a Shinko , my Dolphin is Chinese (I think) and my most recent DC is Korean. The Longhorn is easily the best sounding one. Oh the others sound good , but that Shinko is a beauty. -

My Longhorn has twenty four year old strings , and they still sound great. It’s got one deep, rich, woody thump. I remember it could be seriously twangy with the bridge pickup back when the strings were fresh. I’ve got fairly recent LaBella flats on my other two Dano shortscales , a 59DC and a 56 Dolphin nose. I have a set of LaBella flats on standby in case I lose a winding or break a string. -
I’m usually ok , but my lower back flares up every once in a while. Lightweight modern cabs and heads help. Playing a Dano does too. Mine was initially triggered carrying a monster tv down a flight of stairs about a dozen years ago. It just flares up every once in a while.
