  1. I have the original Forte with the compressor , not the new drive version. And use Bergantino HDN cabs. This is only 700 watts at 4 ohms , but I’ve never come remotely close to maxing it out , tons of headrooom. It’s a simple , clean , fairly transparent amp , with some serious slam. It was easy to dial in , and sounds gorgeous. I think my stage sound is the best it’s ever been. I’ve become a complete fan.
  2. On kijiji again and a seller has a Gator tweed case/stand for three instruments. The seller is slightly out of the city but might be in town in the next day or so , so I might get it. The Gator stand/case looks exactly like the Fender branded one (Fender has red plush interior , Gator is a dark pink) so I suspect both were made by K&K. So I’m hoping it will come my way … Now it’s not something I really need … however …
  3. I remember Duck Dunn recommending a bucket of fried chicken for new strings.
  4. Lovely bunch! I didn’t really plan on buying any last year , but things came up , and I wondered why not ? … I’m in the twenty somethings.
  5. There’s always a couple in Tokyo. I looked at them for some years , didn’t want the bother of international shipping. I was also seeing the odd one in the UK , and Australia. Well worth picking up if you happen upon one. I was bugging the local Yamaha rep , they’re around , but don’t surface very often.
  6. Some of the usual suspects at the local blues dive.
  7. I’ve been waiting for the Space Ranger to show up.
  8. I think Woody did a similar thing but wanted to recreate the Epi New Yorker mini humbucker pickup for bass.
  9. Many flats are springy sounding when you first put them on , it can take a couple of weeks of solid playing for them to settle down. TIs are a very low tension string , but have a nice middle , they project well in a mix. Some find them too flimsy , I love them on 34 in basses but like something stiffer on the short scales I favour these days.
  10. Always check out the hinges on those , if they have a long piano hinge you’re ok , but if it’s two little inch long hinges they’re probably going to give out if they’re subjected to any abuse , like putting too much stuff in the case …
  11. I just have a cheap uke bass , it was on kijiji and I couldn’t help myself , big rubber Thundergut strings , but it’s got a big old thump. Sounds pretty good. I keep an Ashbory around for times I want to hear iffy intonation.
  12. Mid range on the ugly meter. More on the ugly side that just plain , but a far cry from wretchedly hideous. Wouldn’t be in a rush to use it in public.
  13. Nice amp! … meet me in the basement
  14. I‘ve been asked to bring a specific bass , is that the same? One of the cheapest ones I own , Danelectro Longhorn , with ancient strings. It has a great , old school , woody thump.
  15. I mostly play mid sized bars , and frequently run a single 8 ohm cab. Most gigs only the vocals , and maybe a sax are miked , so I need too fill the room, the band stage mix is what people are going to hear. I do have a second cab for bigger rooms and outdoor gigs. There are times it’s needed. I’ve never had to dime the amp. Lots of headroom. Berg 112 & 210 cab combination , Forte head. It’s got a serious slam.
  16. It was a fairly small run and they quickly disappeared. You don’t see them pop up on the used market much , and when they do , they’re gone. I thought that might encourage Gibson to revisit the concept , but they really concentrate on keeping the guitar players happy , their current bass line is pretty limited. That said , their little DC Jr bass is a wonderful little thing!
  17. I’ve never owned a Tbird , but I like them. I had a couple of almost buys over the years , I don’t know why I didn’t pick one up. At first I found the later non-reverse version ugly , but I came around. I like ‘em now. I’ve heard some good things about the recent batch of non-reverse birds. Over the years Gibson have done around eighty basses , including reissues. They have a fascinating history. If they did a short scale reverse bird I’d buy one in a minute. Even an Epi Pro version.
  18. I’ve been looking at replacing the 3 point with a Hipshot , but have four basses with them , truth is I’ve always been able to set them exactly where they need to go without fuss or drama , so I haven’t done it. Yet … If you drop the nose on the three point the two back anchors can lift , but once you get that they’re fine. but they are kinda ugly looking things
