Sometimes you pack the room , sometimes it’s quiet.

The Bamp is not on the website. Jim changes his lines frequently. I’m running an old school tube pre with my Forte now. It’s sounding delicious.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!

I had seen a photo of a modified short scale Ibanez Talman and quite liked the look. So when one turned up on kijiji I picked it up. This was going to be my first mod project. It was heavier than the basses I mostly use , and had a big chunky neck , that had a tendency to dive … after playing it for a while I got quite comfortable playing it. Now I quite like it. It just goes to show you can get used to almost anything if you just spend a little time on it. -
I have two older Rics. They’re a little more to set , but once adjusted are incredibly stable. They both have the original bridges. Both have very slight lift and are a bit of a misery to adjust. Once set , they’re fine. I’ve had my 4001 for around 27 years and only had to adjust it twice. The adjustments were minimal. I’ve only adjusted my 4000 once , but I haven’t had it as long. I think I just had to tweak one saddle on the 4000 when I set it.

I’m always learning different stuff. First I roughly write down the form … intro , A part , B part , chorus , bridge , outro etc. and then work out the various bits , and write them out. After I’ve got the form and the parts down it’s straightforward . If there are variations in the parts I write them out , and note that in the form. Some notes can be brief , others can get complicated. Then it’s simple repetition until it’s committed to memory. I prefer to memorize then be staring at my charts and notes. Sometimes I will need the notes.

Those set neck 4000 basses are really nice.

I’ve been playing in the house band that hosts a blues jam for over 25 , close to 30 years now. We’ve seen many mature and become excellent players , and others that have not. You’re always dealing with various levels of ability. We try and get everyone up , at times that is simply impossible. If I see a bassist in the house , I try and get them up. I have no issue letting others play my gear. (although these days I’ve been using a big orange Gretsch hollow body and most Fender players are completely thrown by that) (and yet some absolutely love it) It’s not an easy job. And when somebody is playing the wrong chords , do you play it their way , or play it correctly? When somebody that is a great player turns up you want to hear them play a little more. You cannot please everybody. They say a good night has a little heaven and a little hell. A great one does too. I don’t see it as an ego thing.

I was happy with GK gear when Markbass started to become popular. Never had any issues with the GK , if I had I probably would have bought in. When I finally changed from GK , the Markbass heyday had passed and I got a great deal on a GB StreamLiner.

Looks great! Eich is not common around here so I’m always curious.

They are beautiful things , I have a later 60’s shark fin that will be getting a new trussrod. I look forward to getting it back in working condition.

We lost a great keyboard and bass player last month and held a memorial gig last night. Barry Cooke. He’s been an institution in our little blues scene. So our favourite old dive was jammed , and just about everybody that wasn’t out gigging was there. Some even flew in from Ottawa. Players from all over the province. We managed to get most everybody up. Stage was packed. Wonderful night.

Yes. Both are great players , legends. Jamie is more of a Jazz guy despite touring with the Barra McNeils. Was trying to help Bruce track down a part for a Steinberger bridge yesterday.

The flats need a little playing time to settle down , but they sit nicely in a mix. If you like an old school thump they are the ticket.
