1. I'll be using this for gig number 2 on Friday night with the Getback band at 20 Rocks in Falkirk if anyone would like to see or hear it in action. Its £7 on the door. There will be a support act first then we're on about 9:30pm. I've bought one of those black things that go around the pickup when you take the cover off so you don't take the skin off your fingers. If the bass is still here by then I'll be fitting it for the gig. They're anything from £20-40 for these but it will be included with the bass when it sells
2.
Now, do I need a Jazz.........hmmmmm
Not as much as you need a Rick Bumpo
3.
Always fancied a Rick but never took the plunge... :-/
Go on, dive in One of the really good things about Ricks is that they hold their value remarkably well. The prices always seem to be going up as well. I bought a midnight blue one about 5 years ago and it was £1169 from GuitarGuitar, their now about £1849
4. The Rotos are totally smooth, quite high tension and the best sounding of all the flats I've used but I would say that Chromes are the highest tension
5. oh yes If you want grinding Chris Squire tones then with the right EQ/overdrive it can do it but favour the neck pickup and it becomes very mellow but still retains and amazing tone that I've never found on any other bass. Do not think that these are pure clank machines that can't do anything else. There's a huge selection of tones available here. I was using this with a Hartke LH500 and its actually capable of overdriving the preamp valve. I'm also in no rush to sell so won't accept any lowball offers. If its still here by the end of August then it'll be coming with me to Liverpool when my band play the Cavern club amongst other venues as part of International Beatles week.
6. And of course Photobucket has decided to do some of the pictures upside down

9. I haven't had this very long but already I realise that its just not the bass for me. This is a 2010 model so it has the full width fretboard inlays, vintage tone selector and walnut headstock wings. I've had a good look and cannot find a single mark on it which is unsurprising considering its only done 2 gigs since new. I always find the A & D strings on Ricks too floppy so I've fitted a set of Legacy 45 -105 gauge strings which are apparently Roto nickels in a different box. I will be including the original ones as well. It comes in its case with keys, allen keys for the bridge and original Rick polish cloth which is unused. [s]I'm looking for £1350 which includes fully insured postage to mainland UK[/s]. I'm now going to offer this for £1200 plus postage, no offers and no trades. Bank transfer or cash on collection preferred as I don't want any Paypal charges at this price. This is still available for trade but the trade value is £1300 You're not going to find a Rickenbacker in better condition than this one - its in better condition than some 'new' shop basses I've seen. Now for the porn:
10. DId I leave my car keys here? Sorry, my mistake.
11. The big ****** for me is that I really wanted a violin bass to use with the Getback band but could I find a Youtube vid with someone using just their fingers? Could I buggery. Just those big macho pick players I use a pick for maybe 4 songs in a night and the rest is pure fingers. One of my all time favourite bass players is big Chris Squire and guess what? he uses a pick
12. The actual answer is Rotosound 45 Jazz Flatwounds. In fact the only string I can get a great, full sound as far up as fret 11on the G when playing Hey Bulldog. Play them near the neck and they can be quite floppy but next to the bridge they're the epitome of short sharp punchy bass tones/ Still going strong after 19 months. Currently working out at a pound odds per month
13. We're currently getting a few gigs in before we head down to Liverpool International Beatles Week beginning on Friday 24th August which will culminate in the big one on Monday 27th August where we play the Matthew Street Music Festival. Our next gig will be at 20 Rocks in Falkirk on Friday 22nd June - Tickets will be £7on the door -more info about the Getback band available here
14. yes, I had a D string that the windings looked like they had a gap on them but the others didn't so I emailed Rotosound and got a brand new one through the post. Another long time Rotoflats user - that set of strings is now on my Precision and as still good as ever after 20 months and dozens of gigs
15. 5 years ago I went to buy the Robocop Trilogy on DVD and came home with a brand new car
16. The MAG 4x10" is normally 450w and the ABM 600w, is it a 2x10"?
17. And now I'm listening to one of my all time favourites - South Side of the Sky by Yes. I must've listened to this song 1000s of times and never tire of it. There's something about the chorus the way the bass and guitar play almost like a harmonised guitar solo like the solo in Hotel California where Don and Joe are playing together or even the guitar harmony in The Boys are back in town. I've said it before but I must've listened to this whole album start to finish 1000s of times since I first heard it in 1994 Thank you Virgin Radio - had it not been for hearing Roundabout in 1993 I may never have heard Yes
18. I can't get enough of Roll The Bones by Rush on the Different Stages album, even the rap part.
19. Just checked it out. £7.17 a month ( £86.04pa ) with Allianz excluding losses from unattended vehicles for just over £4000 worth of gear and £53 per year for the same with Newmoon Harmonic cover
20. Personally its right down to the setup of my bass. I set the action so that when I play normally it sounds "normal" but when I dig in it gets really gnarly and growly. As far as changing for different styles its all in the positioning of your fingers. For fast, punchy stuff then my fingers are nearer the bridge, for rock I'm nearer the middle between the end of the neck and the bridge, Soul would be nearer the neck and swing I would be right up at the neck. Depending on what type of slap sound I'm after I'm either over the top two frets or nearer the bridge pickup for the more Larry Graham style funk. And then there's how hard I attack the strings......... Basically I'm lazy and can't be ar$ed faffing around with pedals and constantly changing my EQ or basses to suit the song so I adapted my playing over the years so I don't need to. A lot of the time there isn't time to do so anyway in a function/wedding band. Like tonight as an example, we did a run of about 5 songs with the 4th one being Town Called Malice. Now if the video is to be believed it looks like Bruce is playing an EB2 but I still go for the grindy Rick tone but when we got to it I had the Precision which has flats fitted. The solution was to play between the bridge and neck pickup really bloody hard and it was pretty close. It takes time. I've been learning for the past 25 years and still find new ways of doing stuff and getting certain sounds.
21. We usually begin with Tush by ZZ Top. Gives the singer a chance to go out front and check the balance during the guitar solo(s). Occasionally its Changing Man by Paul Weller. The Second set usually begins with Dakota by Stereophonics
22. You really need a 12 string Just look at Cheap Trick - 12 string bass, 12 string rhythm guitar a lot of the time and a lead guitarist with a guitar with 5 necks. I've played in 4 piece bands since I was 18 but my main bands have always had keys as well. I'm quite a widdly player but you just can't do that during a solo or it just sounds too empty.
