What are you listening to right now?
Delberthot replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
And now I'm listening to one of my all time favourites - South Side of the Sky by Yes. I must've listened to this song 1000s of times and never tire of it. There's something about the chorus the way the bass and guitar play almost like a harmonised guitar solo like the solo in Hotel California where Don and Joe are playing together or even the guitar harmony in The Boys are back in town. I've said it before but I must've listened to this whole album start to finish 1000s of times since I first heard it in 1994 Thank you Virgin Radio - had it not been for hearing Roundabout in 1993 I may never have heard Yes -

I can't get enough of Roll The Bones by Rush on the Different Stages album, even the rap part. -
Just checked it out. £7.17 a month ( £86.04pa ) with Allianz excluding losses from unattended vehicles for just over £4000 worth of gear and £53 per year for the same with Newmoon Harmonic cover

Personally its right down to the setup of my bass. I set the action so that when I play normally it sounds "normal" but when I dig in it gets really gnarly and growly. As far as changing for different styles its all in the positioning of your fingers. For fast, punchy stuff then my fingers are nearer the bridge, for rock I'm nearer the middle between the end of the neck and the bridge, Soul would be nearer the neck and swing I would be right up at the neck. Depending on what type of slap sound I'm after I'm either over the top two frets or nearer the bridge pickup for the more Larry Graham style funk. And then there's how hard I attack the strings......... Basically I'm lazy and can't be ar$ed faffing around with pedals and constantly changing my EQ or basses to suit the song so I adapted my playing over the years so I don't need to. A lot of the time there isn't time to do so anyway in a function/wedding band. Like tonight as an example, we did a run of about 5 songs with the 4th one being Town Called Malice. Now if the video is to be believed it looks like Bruce is playing an EB2 but I still go for the grindy Rick tone but when we got to it I had the Precision which has flats fitted. The solution was to play between the bridge and neck pickup really bloody hard and it was pretty close. It takes time. I've been learning for the past 25 years and still find new ways of doing stuff and getting certain sounds.

Covers bands "openers" what do you start with?
Delberthot replied to witterth's topic in General Discussion
We usually begin with Tush by ZZ Top. Gives the singer a chance to go out front and check the balance during the guitar solo(s). Occasionally its Changing Man by Paul Weller. The Second set usually begins with Dakota by Stereophonics -
You really need a 12 string Just look at Cheap Trick - 12 string bass, 12 string rhythm guitar a lot of the time and a lead guitarist with a guitar with 5 necks. I've played in 4 piece bands since I was 18 but my main bands have always had keys as well. I'm quite a widdly player but you just can't do that during a solo or it just sounds too empty.

Who made you decide "I'm going to play bass!"

I began playing accidentally. Me and a mate were entering a "talent show" at primary school. I was in P7 at the time. Our thing was singing (and dancing) along to Dancing In the Dark by Bruce Springsteen. Mate of mine had the idea of me using an acoustic guitar as a prop. Anyway I started mucking around on it and ended up buying it and an Ernie Ball guitar book off him for £5 (this was 1987). The talent show came and went (we never won surprisingly enough) and on my birthday I was given a brand new student size acoustic as I had tried to fit steel strings onto it where it had previously had nylon and the neck turned into a large wooden banana. At the time I was an enormous Queen fan, having watched Live Magic a gajillion times and slowly bought every album with my pocket money- they were £4 for all the standard LPs at the time and I think £6 for Live Killers. Fast forward to Christmas and I was given my pick of the guitars in the Littlewoods catalogue but I fell in love with a Marlin Slammer P bass copy in red with white scratchplate and maple neck which looked very similar to the bass John Deacon was using at the time, especially on the One Vision video. So I got that, a yellow curly lead like Brian May uses and a 15w Squier guitar amp. Short answer is John Deacon I've been searching for the right Fender P now for nigh on 25 years and I think after tonight's gig, the FSR which I have now fitted with flats is the one -
They don't quote the figure for the 400w one but the figures most companies quote are meaningless anyway. I'm going from experience of running this set up and being told to turn down cos I was drowing out the music from the club downstairs at the last gig I did with it. It would've went a lot louder too

The 210MBE & 115MBE(400w version) are very well matched and loud but I don't know about the MBX range

I haven't played a Fender in a long time and I've never played a Mexican one I liked until yesterday. Its very well put together and finished. I love the laquered finish on the fretboard. -

Definitely Mexican with special edition label on the back of the headstock and the pictures don't do it justice. Much nicer in the flesh and plays really well also -
OK, I've put together another rig that I fancied so I'm going to offer this one final time for £530 delivered to mainland UK or £500 if picked up. I'm away for the weekend so won't be able to answer any questions until Tuesday. If it doesn't sell then I'll withdraw it and have one hell of a Ric-o-sound rig
