For me it has to have: 1) Rotosound Flats 2) EMGs 3) and be Thunderbird shaped I'll be posting pics during the week of my rebuilt Ibanez Doug Wimbish which will at least have the first two pre-requisites
-
I bought this to try with the Beatles tribute band I'm in but I'm really not a Precision guy. Fitted with a set of Rotosound tapewound strings cos I fancied having a shot of them but they're not for me either. The bass is in practically mint condition bar a couple of tiny marks that your really need to look very closely to see. I literally bought the bass, bought the strings on the forum, used this for one practice and put it back in its bag. Comes with a cheap but functional brand new gig bag for £80 delivered. I'm using some of the proceeds to buy a new charger for my camera cos my wife's one (the one I took these pictures with) is rank rotten.

Aria Pro 2 SLB and Prose Bitsa Fretless ****BOTH SOLD***

I came to the conclusion a few months ago that I don't actually use the neck volume or tone controls so thought it would be cool to get myself an Epiphone NIkki Sixx Blackbird and transfer the EMGs to that body, so I did. What I have for sale now is essentially the same Epiphone Goth Thunderbird that I've been using for the past 18 months but with the pickups from a NIkki Sixx Blackbird. I'll start from the top. It began its life as a normal Made In Korea Epiphone Thunderbird but I like to tinker and tinker I have. The goth is very different to the standard Thunderbird in that it has a mahogany body and jazz bass width neck. The neck is very slim compared to a Fender and doesn't have the pronounced taper that a Fender does I never liked the goth thing on the scratchplate so I attempted to get it off using a stanley blade but it didn't look too good so I got some sticker paper and printed the 1976 Bicentennial Thunderbird logo onto it and stuck it on top. Its starting to look a wee bit marked in places but still does the job. I have added 500k pots to it and changed the jack. It also has a paper-in-oil cap for that vintage snake oil charm. With it being very black and hard to see on stage I added blue Fretfx LEDs to the top of the neck so I can see what I'm doing. The battery has to be in correctly or it flickers a bit. Lastly, I finished it off with a Gibson TRC. I don't think its a real Gibson one but it does the job. I moved the strap button nearest the neck to the front of the heel to aid balance which it definitely helped. When worn with a decent strap it actually points up rather than down. If you wanted to do this yourself then you would be looking at: Epiphone Thunderbird bass (now made in China) £199 from Digital Village Hipshot Supertone Bridge £129 delivered from Bass Direct Fretfx LEDs £75 from Fretfx Truss Rod Cover £10.12 from Ebay I'm not including the price for the sticker paper, pots, knobs, cap, jack, or pickups even though the Deep Sixx pickups would probably cost more than you would get for the standard ones. It doesn't come with a gig bag as I'm keeping my one for the other Thunderblackbird. I'm going to give the buyer two options: 1) The bass with Hipshot Bridge for £260 delivered to mainland UK 2) The bass with standard Epiphone 3 point bridge for £220 delivered to mainland UK I don't have a gig bag for this so I'd rather remove the neck to pack it but if you're local, you're welcome to collect it. The first batch of pics are to show the condition of the bass. I can't find my camera charger so have had to use my wife's which is terrible so ignore the EMGs and Darth Vader badge. The last picture is of the actual bass. The reason there's no strings on it is I don't want to put them on until the buyer has decided which bridge they want to go for. I'll only be putting a set of cheapies on so I can leave them off if you'd rather just put your own ones on it when you get it. The paint on the Made in Korea neck plate is a bit worn as is the paint on a couple of the neck screws. This type of matt finish goes shiny when used so there are shiny sections around the bridge volume, above the pickups and another few places. Not badly noticable when you're gigging but they are visible. There are a few other marks here and there but it has been my one and only bass for the past 18 months so its inevitable.

Fender Precision with Musicman Pickup Modification
Delberthot replied to Davy's topic in Bass Guitars
I briefly had one that had been done before I bought it. Didn't really give me what I wanted at the time -

I'm a big fan of Lollar pickups. If I had the doh ray me's I'd have a set of the Thunderbird pickups. The Precision ones are fantastic. I've had both regular and single coil
-
I had a vinyl covered 7210H in the early 90s so this must be the slightly later carpet covered one. Lovely combo, I had it on top of a 1048H and laterally a 1153

For active TI are the business. I used them on my Ibanez SR1016 but for passive I would say Rotos. Sounds exactly the same after more than a year of use as they did out of the packet.
Coach & Horses, Manchester Road, Linthwaite. Cramped into a corner, Dale Winton on widescreen plasma, not many punters but a friendly crowd. Opening song starts with me playing the riff from the second song. Singer forgets to turn his mic on. Second song starts with guitarist playing the opening riff from the wrong song. Halfway through my amp head vibrates itself off the cab and lands on my pedal board, amazingly no damage but a bent jack plug. Third song guitarist breaks a string halfway through. Fourth song the stand in drummer starts playing the beat from the next song. Guitarist mends string but at solo the string jumps off the saddle notch and detunes itself 3 tones. His face was a picture as he tried to work out why it was out of tune when he was playing the right frets.
Now that's what I call Jazz

Tonight's gig was short. In fact I got in half an hour ago. Local club, usually busy but there was a wedding on and other such stuff so there wasn't a soul there. We ended up getting paid off. The guy wanted to pay us the full amount but we would've felt guilty, plus they want us back again so we still got a decent amount for setting up the gear, playing a couple of songs for sound check then stripping back down again. So its red wine for me tonight Cheers, or as they say in Spain, Cheers.

Here's the link for the Thunderbird with USA pickups I wonder if that means that Rosetti will add the pickups to their spare parts catalogue?
-
I don't have time to find the link but there's a sunburst and a white one that are advertised with Gibson USA pickups for £349 on the website that I linked to at the top

I've had a fair bit of stuff and the outstanding cabs for me were the V-Type ones- 4x12" and 2x15" (the square one as opposed to the tall one) The best amp by a country mile was the Mk V AH150. Don't let the lack of watts put you off. Remember that these areTrace watts.

If you like it then I would keep it. I went through a 5 year period where I bought and sold about 70 basses to find what I wanted. I went from having a Modulus Flea and Warwick Thumb NT5 to now where I have my EpiphoneThunderbird. A bass at a fraction of the cost of the original two but one which gives me my sound and I enjoy playing it more than the other two.

As far as I remember the closest to the "Fender" logo is Brush Script
-
It remind me of a Fender Roscoe Beck with Delano Pickups

A couple of times a year I cross paths with a drummer called Alan Brown who is an amazing player who also plays with Bags of Rock which was a spinoff of The Red Hot Chili Pipers. I call Him Mr Entertainment as he's always got good stories from either when touring Japan or playing at Berkley and meeting drumming monsters like Dennis Chambers. We played recently at a 60th birthday of a singer we've both played for and we were both absolutely guttered yet never missed a beat
Either the Gothic or Nikki Sixx model get my vote, as both are made of mahogany like the Gibsons, so have a deeper tone.
I've currently got both and am in the process of doing a switcheroo. I'm taking the EMG HZs that I have out of the goth, putting them in the Blackbird, swapping necks, fitting a normal bridge, painting silver and having just one volume for the bridge pickup as that's all I use. I'll be selling the Blackthunderbird once its complete - goth body, blackbird neck, deep sixx pickups and volume/tone controls.
Once again thanks for your replies. I was pretty much sold on this until I spotted the mb500, so final question (I promise) what are the pros and cons of the mb500 vs rb700? As I'm really unsure which to go for!!
For me its the weight. 9kg for the 700 versus 15kg for the 2x10" combo. The main differences are that the 700RB is I think made in the USA and the mb500 is made in china, the weight, the ability to biamp with GK cabs which I never used and the size.

woops.sorted now.

Just been online and saw these EB-3 in Pelham Blue, Jack Casady in Silver but the daddy is the new Thunderbirds with Gibson USA pickups for £349. They're also doing a proper silver thunderbird rather than that awful silverburst they did last year which is a huge coincidence as I am painting my own thunderbird silver

I have the MB210 which is a 2x10" combo containing the MB500 so a third option. It was a little bit weird getting used to the controls being on top at the back but even with the 115MBE cab underneath, its still easy to get to them.
