1. I'm using an MB210 combo with one of these cabs underneath. IMO they are exceptionally good. I can get some seriously trouser flapping, in fact the last cab to do that was my old heavy trace 4x12". I've had 3 700RB II heads and sold my last one to buy the combo. A wee bit different to set up but once it was how Iliked it, I haven't touched anything other than the volume. Easily the best and lightest rig I've ever owned and part of the reason I'm not on here as often as I used to be.
2. Well in the end I forgot to go to the hardware shop for the washers and whatnot so I very carefully put one of the screws in, put a bit of material around it and tapped all round with a rubber mallet. Each one easily came out.
3. Hey Bulldog, I'm Down, Helter Skelter. In fact there are too many.
4. That looks like the ideal solution. Thanks everyone for the tips
5.
Stewmac in the States sell a dedicated 'knob and bushing puller' (insert smutty remarks here). I'm not suggesting you pay the high price they show but looking at the picture of the device may give you an idea of creating something similar?
The ferrules in the body are flush so I wouldn't get anything under them but if I put the bolts all the way in the that would give me something to pull on. I'll see if I can put something together at the weekend. As far as I know the inserts are splined so it'll be the combined effect of the jaggy bits and the glue that are keeping them from coming out. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I'm going to have another go at the weekend.
6. Yeah, I couldn't think of any other way of putting this. I would like to install a normal bridge onto my Epi Thunderbird but seem to have the opposite problem to most in that I can't get the little ferrule thingies that sit inside the body out. I've tried screwing the screw things in and pulling with a pair of pliers but that hasn't worked. I've thought about heating up the metal with a soldering iron to melt the glue but it would probably also have the effect of making the ferrule thingies expand with the heat. I don't want to exert too much force in case I damage the body. Any ideas.
7. I'm pretty sure they're still the same company like Squier are to Fender and currently being built by either Unsung or DaeWon in China. Epiphones appear on the Gibson website as well as the Epiphone one
8. I'm going to be tinkering with my Thunderbird very soon and fancy some changes. I'll be putting everything from my current bass into a NIkki Sixx Blackbird body. The body has some dings so I plan on repainting it. I quite fancy using this as an opportunity to fit a more regular bridge. So far I've found the Schaller 463, the Kahler 2440, Schaller 3-D4 and Hipshot A-style. Are there any others that I may have missed? I'm more or less ruling the Kahler out cos I had one years ago and remember it being really fiddly. Next up - what colour?
9. Ah cool. thought there would be a brand to get for these Is this the right thing? There are three tags like a normal pot but which on is which?
10. I've spotted some trim pots on Ebay. Would these do the trick? I'll be using a 500k pot for the bridge volume
11.
you replace the wings?
No, it came with the parts that broke off so I glued it all back together and filled in the blanks with wood filler. Its currently primed and sanded. I'm painting it tomorrow in Ford Imperial Blue
12. When I received this bass it was trashed. Completely broken below the control knobs.
13. I'm still awaiting that call when the Galveston 12ver will be mine
14. I use 000 grade steel wool on my basses. It dulls the finish but if its the best bass you've ever played then what they hay.
15. Never though about that. the control cavity is small but I may try this. Cheers
16. I've just changed the title of the thread to see if it attracts anyone who can help me choose a resistor to lower the volume of the neck pickup without using a volume control
17. Yeah, I thought that so. I'll need to figure what value resistor to use
18.
Thanks, its good to get feedback from someone who actually owns and uses Ashdown! What could you add to the comment about them being really heavy?
they're 65kg. I'm a big guy and can lift heavy stuff but the sheer weight combined with the size and shape means that realistically you're looking at a two man lift to move it without doing yourself an injury. I used my two 4x10"s with a band that were seriously loud. 3 guitarists all playing at guitaristy like volume levels and it coped easily with the volume, in fact I could've gone louder. I couldn't believe how loud it was
19. Some people are OK with the weight but for me it was rediculously heavy. I used two of the blue speaker 4x10" MAG cabs and they were capable of stupidly loud volumes but at 35kg each were still too heavy for me. And regarding whether the blue or the black speakers are better, I contacted Ashdown about this and they told me that they are the same speaker, just in a different colour
20. Yeah, I was thinking about a resistor but didn't know which value to use. The neck pickup would be going straight to the jack and the bridge would be going to a volume then to the jack. I would want the neck pickup to sound like it the volume was on 9 without actually having a volume control
21. would lowering neck pickup height have exactly the same effect on sound as turning the neck volume down? I'm asking as currently the bridge pickup stays on 10 but the neck one is on 8. I only change this when I use a pick where I turn the bridge pickup volume down. I've just bought a Blackbird so plan on using the body but with a single volume control for the bridge pickup instead of the switch. Hope this makes sense
22. put the neck one to the front of the heel right behind the neck like this one
23. Nearly a year later and I still love them. That's them been on the bass since about November 2010 and they're still as good as they were when I bought them. I used to buy strings every 2 months so I've saved myself a fortune so far. I've tried using rounds on other basses but they just don't feel or sound right. The strings are still bright and I still get a nice sharp sound from them.
24. Delivery 33-35 days. Is he sailing it around the UK enroute to the buyer or foreseeing a bit of missing time in the sea of holes?
25. Yeah. Same as a Jazz. If both pups are on full then its quieter. For fingerstyle I have bridge on 10 and neck on 8. Using a plectrum I have it the other way around If the pickups are too high they can either be really gnarly or overdrive the preamp. Too low and you can lose a lot of definition
