1. Yeah I'll be keeping the handles and the feet if I bin it
2. I'm going to be doing an 80s thing with the band and instead of having a huge rig I had the idea to make a dummy cab and simply put my one on top for a typical humungous looking 80s setup. Of course I'm forever changing my mind so it gets to now and I actually have a mini stack comprising of a Gallien Krueger MB210 with a 115MBE cab on the way so I'm not going to need this. Chris (Thornybank) was kind enough to give me this gratis. I have mostly used a jigsaw to cut out the back panel and front baffle then got fed up and finished it off with a very large hammer. I then attached a large sheet of 3mm hardboard to the front of it and sprayed it all black, including the tolex and laquered over the top of it. Its turned out quite well as a dummy cab but it could still probably be saved and turned back into a big useful cab of some description Collection only on this. I'll be firing it to the dump at the weekend if there are no takers or donating it to the local bonfire after removing the handles and feet
3. I've been digging around and it could be Russian or Bulgarian. There's a Russian guy on the Forum that has/had lots of Russian basses, he might be able to tell you more about it And it looks like it said 'Craftsman' on the headstock. There is a current manufacturer using this name but I don;t think its the same
4. I had a bad case of Diarrhea the other week There was nothing amazing about that
5. oops, forgot to update this. I've had the new strings on it for a couple of weeks now and its certainly done the trick. Although the strings are 50, 75, 95, 110 they don't actually feel too high tension. I can still play everything I could with lighter strings and they have a brilliant slap tone as well.
6. Slightly different
7. And here's one that I prepared earlier I don't find these EMGs modern sounding. Maybe the actives but these sound lovely and growly
8. I've been thinking about selling the two Crown XLS 602s that we use with the band and getting a couple of Peavey IPR 1600 power amps. I've not read enough about them to make a decision but I know that Peavey have a reputation for building reliable gear from personal experience and a power amp coming in at 3.2kg is mighty tempting
9. I thought I was going to be reading a story about a guy who beat up Michael Jackson but its the other Jaco and a different type of beating
10. Not used that term for a while. I prefer the word beelin as in "that pie was beelin" meaning not very nice. Yeah, get yourslef a set of Roto flats. I first tried them earlier in the year and now its the only string I use. I've got a set of the 50 gauge ones on my Precision
11. I would love to see him live but not anywhere near London I'm still annoyed that I missed Jack Bruce in Glasgow in March
12. Things are moving fast today. You can see my original review of this bass here
13. It was the SIMS custom shop
14. I've decided to put this back up for sale again I'll start from the top. It began its life as a normal Made In Korea Epiphone Thunderbird but I like to tinker and tinker I have. The goth is very different to the standard Thunderbird in that it has a mahogany body and jazz bass width neck. The neck is very slim compared to a Fender and doesn't have the pronounced taper that a Fender does I have added EMG 35HZ pickups which just slotted into the existing pickup routes. There's a bit of a gap top and bottom but its never got in the way of my playing and is miniscule compared to the huge valley of a Rickenbacker with the cover off. I never liked the goth thing on the scratchplate so I attempted to get it off using a stanley blade but it didn't look too good so I got some sticker paper and printed the 1976 Bicentennial Thunderbird logo onto it and stuck it on top. Many gigs later and it still looks remarkably good. It has the much improved Hipshot Supertone bridge which is heavier than the original stilty thing that they come with so it helps the balance and is in full contact with the body rather than the stupid stilty thing. It adjusts very easily for height, intonation and also string spacing. I have added 500k pots to it and changed the jack. It also has a paper-in-oil cap for that vintage snake oil charm. It has Schaller strap locks fitted as well With it being very black and hard to see on stage I added blue Fretfx LEDs to the top of the neck so I can see what I'm doing. The battery has to be in correctly or it flickers a bit. Lastly, I finished it off with a Gibson TRC. I don't think its a real Gibson one but it does the job. I have it fitted with Roto 45 Gauge flats and the bass growls like a very large growly thing. Nearly forgot, I moved the strap button nearest the neck to the front of the heel to aid balance which it definitely helped. One slight downside of doing this is that you need a very thin strap to fit in there so what I did was to buy a strap extension and cut it short, then attach it to my existing strap using nut, bolt and a couple of washers. When worn with a decent strap it actually points up rather than down. If you wanted to do this yourself then you would be looking at: Epiphone Thunderbird bass (now made in China) £199 from Digital Village Hipshot Supertone Bridge £129 delivered from Bass Direct Fretfx LEDs £75 from Fretfx Truss Rod Cover £10.12 from Ebay EMG 35HZ pickups £119.98 from Digital Village Sticker Paper £9.04 from Crafty Computer paper Roksak gig bag £43 delivered from Wembley Guitar Centre Schaller Strap locks £16 from strings direct Rotosound Jazz Flats £25.95 from Strings Direct I'm not going to include the prices for the knobs, pots and cap as I already had them. I'll be taking the Darth Vader knob off prior to sending as it has been on many a bass of mine and will put the original black one back on. In total that comes to £627.09 for you to do all of this yourself but I am going to offer this for sale for the rediculously low price of £350 plus postage which will be around £10 to mainland UK. I really must be off my nut cos this is the longest I have had a bass in recent years and many have been through my hands in the time I've had this. I don't have any of the original parts that were replaced so can't sell bits of it off.
15. Alternatively I have EMG 35HZs in mine and they're ace
16. I very rarely want something I wanted last week as far as gear goes
17. Going by Hartke's website, the 4x10" TP is 300w and the 4x10" XL is 400w so they must be different drivers
18. Maybe someone who's selling it based on the price they paid for it rather than what they go for now. I bought mine around then for £900
19. I used to use the Fender rack one but since moving away from rack gear I've gone back to my trusty Korg DT10. Much better in that as soon as I hit the switch I can tune silently and that also doubles as a mute switch. The Fender was a really good tuner plus it used to do the Knight Rider sweep of the LEDs from left to right if it wasn't getting a signal for a certain period.
20. It will still be UPS that delivers it. Its normally only if you use someone like Royal Fail that it goes to the French equivelant
21. no and no I was guessing that SD would colour code all their pickup wires the same. I might be able to get a hold of a multimeter at some point but I've never used one before. where should I be holding the pointy stick things that come from it to and what am I checking for? You can tell I'm an expert on these kind of things
22. I've got 500k CTS pots, a paper-in-oil cap and a Switchcraft Jack in mine but it was a tight squeeze. There's not a lot of room in there. The normal Epiphone Thunderbird is just wired up the same as a Jazz bass
