1. And now - Precisions: MIM, MIA, CIJ, JV Squier
2. The other Thunderbird that I had last year
3. Fernandes Freltess Limited Jazz Bass with EMGs Ibanez SRX505
4. Now onto the stuff I've sold on with the most recent being an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Beautiful but just far too heavy Antoria Maple Fretless, now owned by another forum member: Epiphone Explorer. I just couldn't get on with the shape of it
5. I've managed to take pictures of most of the basses I've owned over the years but there are quite a few missing. I'll start with what I have currently: From left to right is my April 1981 Ibanez Blazer, next is my modified Epiphone Goth Thunderbird with Hipshot Bridge and EMG HZs, followed by my newest acquisition which is a MIK Shine 8 string.
6.
Hmmmmm, do I?
yes, you do
7. I've decided to sell this as its surplus to requirements First is a set of D'addario string for 12 string bass. I bought these for my last 12 string bass but due to the frequency that I change basses, the strings arrived after I'd already sold the bass on so they've never been out of the packet. Not entirely sure how long I've had these but the strings are still sealed inside their factory bag. Going by the Stringsdirect website, they're £34 delivered so I can do them for £[s]22[/s] £18 delivered. I also have a brand new unused set of Rickenbacker 8 string bass strings. Being Rickenbacker strings, they're slightly lower tension gauge with 45-55-70-90 being the fundamental strings and 20-25-35-45 for the octave strings so a bit easier on the fingers. Again, Stringsdirect are doing these for £49 delivered so I can do them for £[s]35[/s] £27 delivered See post from 2.18pm today for the deal
8. Its a lot easier thanyou think unless you really get your fingers way under the string when popping
9.
Chicken...
Don't mind if I do Chicken and eggs are my favourite
10. The Pog was the one effect that I badly wanted and ended up being the most disappointing. Everyone should do this at some point but get yourself an 8 or 12ver, split the signal so the highs go to a dirty guitar amp and the lows to your bass amp and soak up the filth In the words of the late, great Randy Savage - " Ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah"
11. Yeah, c'mon pictures. I'm standing here with my Thunderbird and a circular saw waiting for something to happen so I can copy you
12. You can't replicate the sound of an 8 string with an octave. I bought a Pog for exactly that but it sounded shrill and terrible. Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell nailed it when they sang 'Ain't nothing like the real thing' If you play clean and simple then a 12ver is even better.
13. Okay so its not to everyone's tastes but this was the first time I ever heard the 8 string bass, however many years ago it was. The mighty Lee Ritenour Ha - and when you get to 6 minutes in, that had to be the reason why I hit the bass like that when showboating. I had totally forgotten about that. Cor Blimey.
14. I couldn't take my eyes off the bass players legs. Last time I saw legs like that, they had a message wrapped round them I just go with the music. Relatively speaking, I only really began moving recently. About 12 years ago I was aware that I was pulling some Flea bass faces and its kind of progressed from there. It depends on the audience and the song we're playing. I do a lot of showboating, making stuff look more impressive and complicated than it is - bit like the drummer at the wrong gig. I would love to be able to do the jump in the air splits that David Lee Roth does in the video for Jump
15. Doesn't it cost about 6p to put a reserve on? People like that are the ones that gives us Scots a bad name for being tight with money
16.
I modded a cheap precision copy to eight string a while ago, and used the existing bridge with additional grooves cut in the saddles. There are some pictures of it here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=98333&hl=eight Because of the position of the intonation adjusting screws, the strings have to travel at a bit of an angle behind the saddles, and I needed quite deep grooves to stop them from popping out. So the grooves in a threaded saddle may not be deep enough to work well. Admittedly mine was a bit of a zero budget, quick and dirty job just to see if it would work. The intonation is a bit rough higher up, but not totally unusable.
Cool. If I decide to keep the bass (I'm already thinking about selling it) I may use the black bridge I have now as the strings enter the bridge quite low down so I've managed to get the intonation screws into those holes meaning that the string pairs will enter the back of the bridge side by side. Cheers
17. Without a doubt - The Foo Fighters The chance to play with one of my favourite drummers, Taylor Hawkins. The legendary Pat Smear, Dave Grohl and Chris Shiflet who also plays in another of my favourite bands - Me First and the Gimme Gimmes Hell yeah
18. Completely amp and cab gas-free. I love the sound and it will cope easily with anything I'm doing just now. I'll never sell the Thunderbird and am loving the Blazer cos its got the Precision tone I'd been searching for for years. Just bought an 8 string yesterday and already thinking about selling it. I really fancy one of those CV 50s Precisions now that they do them in a more eye-friendly colour. Anyone bored with theirs already and want to take a walk on the wild side with a swap?
19. Hanging Around by the Stranglers You can almost imagine that the bass strings are rusty bits of barb wire. Its such a dirty sound
20. If I had the cash I'd buy another Warmoth in a heartbeat. Top notch quality. There's so much choice - you want a Jazz body with a precision and Stingray pickup routes, no problem. Gold coloured fretwire? Of course you can. 8 string neck that will fit a standard Fender body? forget about it
21. The current bridge only has one saddle for each pair of strings and I don't plan on playing very high up on it so a 4 saddle bridge will be fine. I want to get it sorted cos I don't like the strings that are on it but I don't want to put the new ones on until I can get the strings low enough. I've got a set of Rickenbacker strings which are nice low tension to make it easier to fret. They're around £50 for a set so I want to make sure I can get the strings low enough before I fit them
22. I've just bought myself an 8 string bass and I'm in the process of setting it up but I'm having a problem with the bridge. Its one of these chunky ones The problem is that I've lowered the saddles as low as they'll go but the strings are still higher than i like. I've straightened out the neck to see if it would help. It did to an extent but I still want it lower. I've had an idea to use a standard Fender type one and simply drill another hole next to each of the 4 that are already there. I can get over the issue of having to create new grooves for the octave strings by using one of the old threaded style saddle bridges. I have a cheapy bridge in front of me and I can lower the strings to where they should be with one of these - can anyone forsee any issues with doing this? I've had a look at the Schaller and Wilkinson ones and they also stand too proud and I don't want to have to route the body to make the bridge sit lower. The bass is a neck through one cos if it were a bolt on I would just have whipped the neck off and fired something in at the body end of the neck pocket to shift the pitch and get the strings closer to the body
23. I use flats exclusively, except on the 8 string although that's only a matter of time but when I do use rounds I will only use Hartke ones as they feel and sound the best to me. I've tried them all from cheap and nasty Alice ones to gold Optimas and I just prefer the Hartkes.
24. The Rotos are in between the high tension Chromes of the same gauge and the lower tension TIs
25. I'll take a guess that the TBP is a precision pickup in a Thunderbird shaped housing, the TBJ will be similar but a jazz inside, the TBDC will be similar to the 35DC, ditto for the TBCS = 35CS. The TBTW allows you to switch between a CS humbucker and a Jazz.
