Antoria PJ Maple Fretless For Sale or Trade
Delberthot replied to Delberthot's topic in Basses For Sale
I'm not sure about the finish - as you say there's no burst where the scratchplate would be but they probably didn't bother as they thought no one would see that part of the body anyway. There's no burst over the forearm contour probably to make it easier to paint or something. Its definitely not a refinish. The neck at the body end is about 3mm narrower than a Fender one so if you fit a scratchplate, there will be a small gap either side of it. -
Antoria PJ Maple Fretless For Sale or Trade

I've only just bought this but I've decided that I think that's me finished with fretless basses for the forseeable future. This is an Antoria bass and is Fujigen Gakki made, which are the magic words apparently, in 1977. Bassassasin is your man if you want more information on these. This is my first foray into Japcrap which is a bit of a misnomer in this case as it is a very solid bass. I've always wanted a maple fretless and this one's a cracker. Its had what looks like a Di Marzio J pickup added. It has the 4 wires, hex pole pieces and the pat applied for sticker on the underside. The J pickup has a higher output than the P so you may want to adjust the pickup height or change the P for another Di Marzio or something with a similar output. I am puzzled what the body wood is, probably alder or similar but in the control cavity it looks like mahogany which I doubt, probably just years of use or some mystic force. The J pickup route has been done very well like it was done by someone who knows what they were doing, so clearly not me then I've spent a few days replacing the electronics and giving it a good clean to remove 33 years of funky deposits - don't get me wrong, the bass is still funky and looks like a well played bass. I've also fitted brand new strings, I just need to adjust the intonation and action and it'll be ready to go. Some of the laquer on the maple board has worn through and the bass is covered in what I'd call natural dings from years of use. The porn thread can be viewed here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry952758 It comes with a hard case made in England by the Freestyle Case Company if that means anything to you and all the catches, hinges and handle work I didn't pay a lot for this in the grand sense of the word so I'm not going to rip anyone off on here, Ebay yes but here no so it could be all yours for £160 which will include shipping to mainland UK. I have plenty of cardboard to fire around the the case so I'm not going to be charging you to pack it. I may be interested in trades but would prefer a straight sale

I've decided that its not for me so I'm offering this for sale now.

Finished for now - There's a huge difference in output between what I assume to be the original P pickup and the much hotter J pickup which I'm not happy about but being Japcrap I'm not about to spend a great deal rectifying it. I have thought about buying a cheap set of pickups or even disconnecting the P pickup and fitting a Bartolini 2 band active EQ which I have going spare at the minute. I may also get myself a nice cheap cream scratchplate ( I don't do tort ) in the future, we'll see.

Some pictures taken during cleaning Don't get your hopes up too much for a completely transformed bass - I just wanted to get rid of the funk As you can see, some helpful chappie has added lines to the side and top edge with their finest magic marker or similar. it would originally only appear to have had side dots.

As a Chris Squire fan myself I lusted after the Rickenbacker sound for many years until I bought one and discovered that no matter what I did, I could not make it do 'that' sound. The closest I got was with an Epiphone EB-3. Try as many as you can - you have had 5 so far so have much to try before you decide on what you like. You may find that the next bass you try is the one for you or, like me, you may find that you need to try an excessive amount (70odds and counting) to find what it is you want. Or maybe like me, you discover that regardless of what bass you own, you end up sounding like yourself.
Nice, that. I was watching that one - just curious, no intention of pulling the trigger. Anyway K77 prefix on the serial makes it November 1977 - these were from Fujigen, identical to the equivalent Ibanez/Greco etc models. Antorias have the same model numbers as Ibanez too, I think they're originally factory designations, and this will be a 2367B. It would once have had a nice tort plate - and no J pup! Speaking of which, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that turned out to be a DiMarzio. Jon.
I think it may very well be a DiMarzio - it has the hex pole pieces and the patent applied for sticker on the underside. I've changed the cover as it was a tad funky and the poles were a bit rusty to reveal that it is a humbucker with 4 wires

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Delberthot replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I've fired a couple over in the gear porn section. I'm making a few alterations but nothing significant other than new pots and pickup covers. Once I've given it a good clean I'll take some better ones -
Sold for £124. So much for my estimate of £180. With a hard case too! Jon may over-rule me , but I'd prefer this Antoria to the fretless Maya being sold for £199 at the moment. But I think someone got a real bargain with the Antoria.
Yes I did -
I spotted this going on Ebay and managed to win it. Its just arrived so I've taken some pictures before I take it apart to clean it. It is very funky so I'll be getting the metal parts into some cheap cola to clean them up then put it back together. I have no idea how old it is and haven't had a chance to have a rake around to see if I can find a close approximation. especially now that the ar$e has fallen out of the price for used Epiphone Thunderbirds. they're going for silly money now which is bad if you're selling but great if you're buying
-
Go with whatever feels most comfortable to you. Your amplification can make a big difference as well. I've been playing for 23 years, gone through 70 odd basses and currently I am playing an Epiphone Thunderbird through choice as I like the sound, the feel and they're cool. Of all the basses I've regretted selling, there are only a couple but when you look back and really think about it, were they really that great or is it just nostalgia? Just go for it.
Apparently the original demo version of the song had much more of slap-type bass line and very busy, but Trevor "Buggles" Horn pared it down to the bare minimum. Proof that less is more I guess.
That'll be this then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhdlEf_4BU0

If you're going to have the fretboard laquered then you'll need to remove it from the frets. If you can find my old thread showing me putting together my '56 Single Coil Warmoth in the build diary section from about a year or so ago then there's loads of pictues on there. It is very easy to put together - just be careful if you buy Gotoh tuners, the screws have a habit of snapping regardless that you've already drilled a pilot hole big enough In fact, here it is: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=warmoth

Bass Collection 461. Japanese built early 90's .SOLD.

I've had 2 now, both of which are on the user photos section thingy and would've had more but when i bought mine, the exchange rate was around $2:£1. They are exceptionally welll made. Everything fits perfectly. They wipe the floor with anything Fender could do. The only trouble some have with them is the necks can feel a little clubby due to the steel reinforcement rods that they fit to strengthen the neck.

only 60 models, pah I had at least double that tonight - Airfix something or other Last night it was Baldy Jim's retirement doo in Glasgow. Jim is the singer in my pub band and he retired last week after 40 years service doing something on the railways involving trains funnily enough. It was downstairs in Waxy O'connors - 40 minute set so Jim could have a retirement party with a difference instead of having a bunch of boring old C U Next TuesdayS talking about work and other assorted pish. Really good night. Tonight was a wedding where the bride and groom had got married abroad so everyone turned up to the reception sober meaning that it took most of the first half to get the audience on the dance floor. The Thunderbird is a dirty dirty bass. It can do Jazz bass burp and fart but also heavy overdriven preamp, clanky, rattly harmonicy - well you get the idea. If you ever get a thunderbird - fire on a set of Hartke strings and drop the action as low as it will go.

I'll meet you on the other side - OK the drunk thread - I'm in the process of resurrecting it as we speak
No no no... this is Jazz bass growl....played lower on the E string, gets the growl goin even more IMHO its both pups up..the back pup sound is burp not growl.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d9eydCfTdw...feature=related
I don't hear any growl - I'd call this 'parp' growl to me is when you're overdriving the preamp in your amp so its distorting in a nice way - either that or you've got a GK head with the boost up at about 1 o'clock. The action has to be low enough to get some fret buzz as well. Take tonight for instance - I've got the action on my Epi T-Bird as low as it will go until I get the Hipshot on it so that when I dig in it turns into a snarling animal. The only bass I've managed to get an action as low was my Modulus Flea Bass. I tried to lower the pickups a shade but they only go down so far. Anyway, growl is mainly heard on the E string and if you want to hear my definition of it you need to come and listen to my band. The growl is undeniable, it sounds like a dirty chainsaw with mucho rust going on 4:52 is where you hear it most but the sound in general is how I'd define growl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voBODG8kvLw

I agree - total sh*te I love my setup. Its probably the longest I've kept a hold of anything in the last few years. Until someone comes up with a better version of the 2x15" and 4052H they're here to stay. Nothing beats a GK head to give me 'my' tone Being absolutely honest I couldn;t give a monkeys about amps and cabs any more. I have exactly what I need and until I get too old and feeble to lift the 2x15" its going to be staying with me. Its quite unique to be in the position of having no gas for amps and being absolutely 100% happy with your setup

Should/Can I combine capacitors in a P bass?
Delberthot replied to krispn's topic in Repairs and Technical
I have those same caps and generally put them in all my basses - call it snake oil, call it good old Ruskie workmanship but I like them. -
When I'm playing Billie Jean I have my Boss OC-2 on for the whole song - chorus during the verse and flanger in the chorus Not exactly accurate but it sounds the bollocks
