Must be the time for it. I've just started looking for one for myself. The last time I played was when I was at school. I think I'm initially going to hire one to see how I get on and get myself a teacher immediately just to show me the correct technique so I don't do myself an injury. Mev Taylor in Edinburgh rents them out and they're not as expensive as I thought they'd be (DBs, not teachers)

not one of your obvious bass lines there. I learned it by first working out what the root notes were and adding it in from ther.

its all about rhe pickup - I managed to get my CIJ one for £265. The real thing was to get the Lollar pickup to make it sound the dogs sloblock

just letting light gauge strings settle in just now on my bass Rick strings to me were like rubber bands - about as much use as tits on a boar

After mucho basses from a Warwick Thumb and a Modulus Flea bass to a Wesley see through bass and another that I got for free that it doesn't matter what bass I play anymore. It may be from changing so often that I've adapted to being able to get used to any bass very quickly My current bass is an Epiphone EB-3 that I've just fitted a Hipshot bridge to to make it easier to adjust. Other than that its original. My other bass is a fretless conglomeration of Squier PJ body, fretless neck bought from Gafbass and and an Artec active 2 band EQ. Ampwise its a whole different kettle of fish - to enable me to get 'my' sound I must have a Gallien Krueger amp as nothing else will do. For cabs I've been searching for years for something with balls that allows me to hear my sound clearly yet have a lot of grunt so I can use it for standalone or with a PA. Currently and for the foreseeable I am using a phenomenal trace elliot 2x15" with 7052H bright box. So there you have it - I've thrown down the gauntlet before: I can take any bass and I mean any bass as long as it can be set up and gig it live. Amps are a whole different thing - my amp has to be new or nearly new as I have a mad phobia about my amp breaking down. Cabwise, as long as it has the balls regardless of age I'll try it.

A lot of very formal answers about study and buying books and getting a teacher etc which may work for someone who wants to learn the ins and outs or scales, modes and a load of other stuff that I don't understand. When I first picked up the bass when I was 12 I didn't want to be like anyone, I simply wanted to play along to records. If I heard a tune I liked, I'd try and learn it. I was a huge Queen fan and enjoyed learning as much as I could. I went to see Eric Clapton when I was 14 and began listening to Nathan East as I thought it was amazing to see a guy playing the hell out of a bass with far too many strings and still being able to laugh and dance on stage. Shortly afterwards I first listened to 'Appetite for Destruction' and wore out the cassette tape by listening to it so much. It wasn't until I was 16 that I first heard the Chilis and Primus and that took me to a whole different level. i've listened to Jaco, Manring, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooton and all the others but find them boring as hell and don't seem to add anything that I would consider useful enough to want to learn from any of them. I get bored listening to people even talking about Jaco. Getting a good teacher, buying a good intructional book/DVD/etc may appeal to someone who wants to learn scales, apreggios, perhaps stuff that their favourite bass player did when they were starting out but it isn't necessarily the best way for everyone and I don't feel that I have lost out in any way. In fact, I bought my first book last week - Progressive Tapping Technique. Its something I've wanted to learn for a long time but because of its complexity of playing multiple notes at once, I felt a book would be the best way to learn as I can see the notes written down. I don't want to learn it so I can be like anyone else, just for something a bit different to add in during a gig where the music allows it. I know Bilbo is a big fan of proper learning and technique and as far as learning upright goes I'd absolutely agree as a bad techinque can lead to physical problems later down the line but its not what everyone wants or needs. If I had gone in that direction when I was first picked up the bass I'd probably have given it up long ago.

ah cool man, you managed to find one then. I'd be very interested in hearing how this sounds - The TVT9 is a phenomenal preamp. I used the Trace combo with this preamp for the top end of my 12ver

Are they really worth that or is this more likely to appeal to a young trendy band who've just made it and are going for the obscure older guitars look?

I think every combo I've seen has been like this - suppose they don't need a full case since its all protected inside plus it keeps the weight down a bit as well

You could do what I do and complain directly to the Uk distributor that they're the best part of £25 per pair - they could send you the ones that attached the amp Jack Bruce was using to the rack for the Cream reunion concerts No wait, I got those :brow:

It'll be like when valve amps were overtaken by solid state. Everyone wanted the latest transistor stuff that was coming out - except Vox cos that used to melt. As soon as there were only a handful of companies making valve stuff, everyone suddenly wanted it and so now you have modern companies such as Markbass and other companies coming from the ashes like Matamp all vying for this latest boost in valve popularity. There may become a time down the line where everything is digital and using lightweight neo speakers - suddenly people will start making a beeline for the older stuff simply cos you can't get it any more and remember when they used it when all of this was just fields. In which case, Thornybank has his retirement fund ticking over until then. I like big, solid cabs. I tried lightweight and found it guilty. I like my heavy (by today's standards) Gallien Krueger 700RB II and my heavy Trace 2x15".

I had a Corvette 5 string - a lot of variety of sound but easy to get a good sound right away. Phenomenally fast neck, one of the fastest I've ever played. Brilliant B String - really suits a set of Warwick Yellow label nickel strings so stop it being too zingy I sold it. believe it or not, because my thumb kept trying to lodge itself between the pickups and I couldn't find a comfortable place to put it.

Hmm. Many choices. I've gigged with a Trace 4x12" and a Trace amp putting out 90w before and it was loud enough that I didn't need the full 90w. If you want warm and are insistent on a tube preamp then get a Trace V-type combo or failing that a Hartke LH500. Gallien Krueger are the bollocks and the whole reason I have gone back to them after trying many different heads. This is my latest setup and without a doubt the absolute best sound I have ever had. I'm thinking the same - for some reason I;ve just remembered the story about the audiophiles that were fooled with the wire coathangers joined together when they thought it was Monster super dooper speaker cable. I've always used both speaker outputs from the amp when I've been using two cabs except from my current setup where I link my 2x15" to my Brightbox . The reason for this is that it is what I was told to use by Guitarist magazine and my local music store so I'm not saying either is wrong just what I was told by different people If you're not playing stadiums then there shouldn't be a problem, if you are then its all in the mind
