1.
Whatever you think about the man now, he was certainly one of the pioneers of electric bass and should be accorded due respect for that alone, quite apart from his well-documented songwriting skills. IMHO.
I once had a Pioneer Stereo and it was sh*t. Accept the fact that not everyone likes him and not everyone want to be a brown nose toward him- I don't like him as a bass player, guitar player or any other player
2. I stand by my statement - utter sh*te. I don't rate him at all, c'mon his solo stuff after the beatles was rank rotten and I don't really rate much of the beatles stuff at all. Regardless of who was influenced by who, personally I don't buy into that crap at all. Unless you go out to intentionally copy someone then you have your own style. I may have a fretless but one mention of Jaco has me sleeping. I may have an EB-3 but I'm not trying to be Jack Bruce. I have a hangover today so am not in a particularly good mood so please - I cannot stand the guy and that is my personal opinion, you don't have to like it or try to argue it.
3. I forgot to add - the Frog Chorus? Silly Love Songs? Simply Having A wonderful Christmas Time? what utter sh*te.
4. William Shears Campbell to give him his correct name is a dick. I've never understood the appeal of his dull muffled basslines. The Rickenbacker nuts go crazy about his sound but it sounds as dull and muffled as it did when he played his cheap Gibson EB-1 copy. He is an arrogant twat and I for one have learned nothing from him - a bit like Jaco to me - as soon as someone mentions him I get very tired.
5. I'm pretty sure the bass player from Ska Face (who are from Blackpool) is a member here but I am having trouble locating him. I'm just back from blackpool and we saw them last weekend at the Venue in Cleveleys. They were absolutely fantastic. One of the best bands I've heard in a long time. Drunk as a skunk (me that is) but loved the show. Are you here Ska man? Cos I want to know what bass you have - it was a bizarre Epiphone looking beautiful sounding ska bass
6. I'm thinking Dean or Peavey Palaedeum - doesn't look anything special. A JPJ custom bass should be a dual course 12 string bass, at least JPJ in the modern sense, otherwise its a Jazz
7. I used Ti flats on mine but it was active. i think a passive 6 would sound sh*t with flats
8. Funnily enough I discovered this site on Talkbs as well.
9. I've been with my wife now for 10 years but before that I did manage to pull a fair few girls over the years. The funniest was a trainee dental nurse at a wedding. The keyboard player offered to play the bass part to a couple of songs so I could have a dance with her at a slow song. By the end of the song you we were standing snogging in middle of the dance floor which had by this time cleared. We went out on a few dates and the subject of age came up. She thought I was about 19 and I thought she was as well - I was 23 and she was 17. She was the double of Billie Piper and probably about the same age at the time. That was in the middle of my run of going out with younger girls - I started off with a 19 year old then 18, 17, 16 and then I gave myself a shake as I didn't like where this was heading and met my wife the year after who is 4 years older than me
10. you would think that someone who has 260 feedback points would know how to work things like putting pictures in the listing and the fact that if he really wanted to use Parcelfarce he can calculate postage online or with almost any other courier as well. Why does the picture have the neck there? I thought he didn;t have it?
11. I've owned both Terror Bass and GK 700RB II I found the TB to be a very dark sounding amp which I found difficult to get a giggable sound from. the EQ is very limited. I'm a fan of simple controls so at first I liked the fact that this amp only had a couple of tone controls but I didn;t seem to be able to get anything useful from it. The GK on the other hand is uter bliss as far as amps go - I'm on my third one due to GAS. I'll see something that I want to try so the GK gets sold only for its replacment to be sh*te so I end up buying another. After I sold my TB I immediately bought another GK 700 and took it to a gig without touching anything. This amp allows you a great deal of control over your sound but its inherent sound is fantastic so just a tiny bit of tweeking is required to get you exactly the sound you want. I've used a GK with the following cabs: Trace 1153 Trace 1153H Trace 1524 Trace 1528 Trace 1248H Trace 1518 Schroeder 1212L Ashdown 115ABM Peavey 410TX Behringer BA410 I couldn;t even begin to list all the basses I've used it with but there's as varied a selection as you're likely to use from a Warwick Thumb NT5 and Modulus Flea to cheap/free basses and onto my current Epiphone EB-3 IMO there isn;t anything better than the GK for giving such a fantastic, versatile, useable sound. Personally the 1001 is overkill as the 700 puts out 480w into 4 ohms. I'm using mine with an 8ohm cab so I'm getting about 300w and that's for all gigs including ones without PA support and its absolutely nowhere near its limit, in fact its just ticking over.
12. The Clevinger was the first one I heard being used by Nathan East and it does sound good. When I was 17 I used to carry the School's DB 2 miles from the school to my house and I still have vivid memories of how heavy that was. One of my biggest concerns with gigs is going to be the transporting of it and whether or not I can fit it in my car
13. fantastic amp with fantastic preamp valves fitted not long before we traded. I concur with Mert, the absolute best combo you are ever likely to play through. capable of some monumental sounds. Add an extension cab and this'll do a full volume rock gig with no PA support easy peasy. By the way, my wife was wondering how much for the Chewbacca on top of the combo.
14. Before I begin I am in no way dissing these, I would truly like to understand them. I play electric bass both fretted fretless. They sound like electric basses. I am contemplating my first double bass as I really like the sound and can think of several sections it could fit into my current band as well as open up opportunities for other work. It sounds like a double bass. I don't get the EUB. It doesn't really sound like either, it has a sound of its own. When I think of the type of sound Tony Levin gets, it sounds a bit like a bit like a slow fart for want of a better term. If you play one, do you play it because it has a sound of its own, because you can't afford or want to try a double bass or some other reason?
15. Must be the time for it. I've just started looking for one for myself. The last time I played was when I was at school. I think I'm initially going to hire one to see how I get on and get myself a teacher immediately just to show me the correct technique so I don't do myself an injury. Mev Taylor in Edinburgh rents them out and they're not as expensive as I thought they'd be (DBs, not teachers)
16. I think I played thorugh there about 15 years ago for a biker's do.
17. not one of your obvious bass lines there. I learned it by first working out what the root notes were and adding it in from ther.
18. Cool - where were you playing?
19. its all about rhe pickup - I managed to get my CIJ one for £265. The real thing was to get the Lollar pickup to make it sound the dogs sloblock
20. just letting light gauge strings settle in just now on my bass Rick strings to me were like rubber bands - about as much use as tits on a boar
21. Oh my giddy aunt - currently a Live version of Mr Pink by Level 42 that i discovered on Spotify. Gets very close to being heavy rock, funky boogaloo, heavy duty thingy. iam so looking forward to seeing them at the end of the year. Funny thing is that I've never felt the urge to play like Mark King, I just enjoy their music This is likely to be followed by Saxon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYSIKC5IccI And then possibly Frankie Goes to hollywood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVJMMT9nXRI
22. After mucho basses from a Warwick Thumb and a Modulus Flea bass to a Wesley see through bass and another that I got for free that it doesn't matter what bass I play anymore. It may be from changing so often that I've adapted to being able to get used to any bass very quickly My current bass is an Epiphone EB-3 that I've just fitted a Hipshot bridge to to make it easier to adjust. Other than that its original. My other bass is a fretless conglomeration of Squier PJ body, fretless neck bought from Gafbass and and an Artec active 2 band EQ. Ampwise its a whole different kettle of fish - to enable me to get 'my' sound I must have a Gallien Krueger amp as nothing else will do. For cabs I've been searching for years for something with balls that allows me to hear my sound clearly yet have a lot of grunt so I can use it for standalone or with a PA. Currently and for the foreseeable I am using a phenomenal trace elliot 2x15" with 7052H bright box. So there you have it - I've thrown down the gauntlet before: I can take any bass and I mean any bass as long as it can be set up and gig it live. Amps are a whole different thing - my amp has to be new or nearly new as I have a mad phobia about my amp breaking down. Cabwise, as long as it has the balls regardless of age I'll try it.
23.
I anchor my thumb on top of the pickup, and where im quite a heavy handed player press down quite hard with it. Balls!
so was it just me that read this as 'I anchor my balls on top of the pickup'? that's bound to cause some sort of strain
24. A lot of very formal answers about study and buying books and getting a teacher etc which may work for someone who wants to learn the ins and outs or scales, modes and a load of other stuff that I don't understand. When I first picked up the bass when I was 12 I didn't want to be like anyone, I simply wanted to play along to records. If I heard a tune I liked, I'd try and learn it. I was a huge Queen fan and enjoyed learning as much as I could. I went to see Eric Clapton when I was 14 and began listening to Nathan East as I thought it was amazing to see a guy playing the hell out of a bass with far too many strings and still being able to laugh and dance on stage. Shortly afterwards I first listened to 'Appetite for Destruction' and wore out the cassette tape by listening to it so much. It wasn't until I was 16 that I first heard the Chilis and Primus and that took me to a whole different level. i've listened to Jaco, Manring, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooton and all the others but find them boring as hell and don't seem to add anything that I would consider useful enough to want to learn from any of them. I get bored listening to people even talking about Jaco. Getting a good teacher, buying a good intructional book/DVD/etc may appeal to someone who wants to learn scales, apreggios, perhaps stuff that their favourite bass player did when they were starting out but it isn't necessarily the best way for everyone and I don't feel that I have lost out in any way. In fact, I bought my first book last week - Progressive Tapping Technique. Its something I've wanted to learn for a long time but because of its complexity of playing multiple notes at once, I felt a book would be the best way to learn as I can see the notes written down. I don't want to learn it so I can be like anyone else, just for something a bit different to add in during a gig where the music allows it. I know Bilbo is a big fan of proper learning and technique and as far as learning upright goes I'd absolutely agree as a bad techinque can lead to physical problems later down the line but its not what everyone wants or needs. If I had gone in that direction when I was first picked up the bass I'd probably have given it up long ago.
25. ah cool man, you managed to find one then. I'd be very interested in hearing how this sounds - The TVT9 is a phenomenal preamp. I used the Trace combo with this preamp for the top end of my 12ver
