1. Laugh? I thought I'd never start.
2. Wow. My first proper bass amp when I was 16. I'm sure they were about £600 odd quid new. Fantastic sound but ended up getting caught up in the hype that was Trace Elliot
3. I'm guessing they're so cheaply made that they would melt at 4 ohms hence the 8 ohm minimum and 16 ohm cabs to get that 8ohm load? They look well enough made but I've no idea how they'll sound.
4. From what you have owned, I would suggest some kind of super Jazz with a graphite neck. Passive but with a preamp you can switch on or bypass completely. Ash body, maple neck with block markers. With the exception of the graphite, I think I've just described your current bass.
5. Now sold and will shortly be on its way to the US
6. I'm happy to end the Ebay auction providing there are no bidders to anyone here who would like to buy it
7. Nice, really nice. Just needs a bridge ashtray
8. my favourite sound is either the Dragon Attack solo or the high up bit on Liar. I'm confident I can get it on my usual rig
9. I have no conscience. I am the man, Do you play with 3 or 4 fingers? the you're a cnut. f*** off. Take me drunk I'm home

13. My mum originally- Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody contains the world's greatest misheard lyrics: 'Save this boy from his pork sausages' and the greatest line ever: 'Beelzebub has a devil for a sideboard' If it wasn't for me old mam I would never have got into bass and would never had my first P bass copy. My second influential person was a guitarist in my first band's aunt who took us to see Eric Clapton in 1994. My first ever concert. Nathan East playing. Has affected me ever since
14. I am a huge John Deacon fan and have always loved his sound. He was my first bass hero and I suppose a lot of what he did has rubbed off on me. I have never had any luck with regular P basses in terms of getting a good sound so what would you recommend to help me get the John Deacon sound?
15. I'm putting it to the other guys in the band to either got with 2 2u racks or a 4u roller rack or the 4u roller rack bag. This is actually for our band's PA amps - 2 Crown XLS602s I just can't make up my mind what to go for
16. I had a Crafter last year. Used it live on several occasions and it was really good. Fed back on my amp but it has a phase switch to overcome that. Absolute bargain. Really nice playing bass Other ones that may fall into your price brackets are Epiphone El Capitains and possibly second hand Fender BG whatevers. I'd probably avoid all no name stuff as you want something that you can actually play and not have an action like Robin Hood's straightest bow
17. I really believe that it all boils down to what you've got: Gallien Krueger - solid state but does a good impression of a driven valve amp Ashdown - Valve pre - as wooly as a wooly christmas jumper Hartke - pass Genz Shuttle - personally this is the best sounding light weight amp I've tried. I could even be persuaded to say better than Gallien in overall sound. The valve does make a huge difference to the sound as far as I'm concerned. I recently had the misfortune to try an Ampeg STV II Pro and, well, it was complete $h!te. Definitely put me off valve for a while. It'll take someone a lot of effort and a warm Marshall VBA400 to change my mind. I used the Shuttle in preference to it as it sounded a million times better and louder. I've just recently sold a proper valve preamp combo - a Trace Elliot TVT9 guitar combo - it had 8 preamp valves which were very effective. there is a debate as to whether 1 single preamp valve does anything or not. I'm looking into multi valve preamp setups just now
18. Shine do make very good basses but forget about the neck through natural ones as I think they look cheap and scrimp on the electronics and hardware. I think that they make Epiphones still. not sure though. My first 6 was a Washburn that I got from Dolphin music for about £135. The best 6 I ever owned was an Ibanez SR1016 (I think) and would buy it back if the owner was ever selling it (who happens to be a member here) If you're starting out then the best thing to do would be to try as many basses as you can. I've bought so many basses that I feel that i can comfortably buy something and make it sound good, even if its a pile of $h!te. Better to buy a bass with decent electronics and hardware than something that you'd have to spend a shed load making playable
19. If its all about a certain sound that a certain bass player had on a certain album then forget about it. Personally Rickenbackers sound hee haw like Chris Squire, Stingrays sound nothing like stingrays and so on. I can get my Wamoth bass to sound more like a Rick than I could get my Rick to sound like a Rick. I've been everywhere from A to Z (excluding Alembic and Zon ) and its all about trying different stuff. Nothing is as it seems.
20. I'm currently using Optima Gold Strings so where's your stainless and nickel now then? Seriously though, I cannot believe how good Rotos are when they go dead. Seriously good strings. It is really going to depend on your bass: With the Stingrays and my '51 P bass reissues, nickel Hybrid Slinkies were where it was at but I absolutely love stainless with my Warmoth. I'd also have to say a huge +1 to Hartke strings. Cheap as chips and they sound fantastic. When the Optimas die I'll flip a coin to decide if Rotos or Hartkes go back on. Nickel is softer, as is 24 karat gold, than stainless steel so won't eat your frets as much. For pure finger softness and the ability to play dozens of nights on the trot, nothing can beat TI flats.
21. 4 string 3 bands usually go for around £700, 5s for £850. Personally, the best Stingray I ever owned was my 30th Anniversary but it was far too beautiful to consider gigging in pubs. The punchiest, growliest, gnarliest bass sound I ever had from any of the Stingrays I owned and the reason my Warmoth has a mahogany body.
22. I thought I'd revive this thread instead of creating a new one. I too am looking for one and came across this: http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~G...-4U~ID~8470.asp Not sure it would hold up with 2 Crown power amps in there though. The problem I have with the regular ones is that the wheels don't seem to stick that far out so, it for example, you happened to be wheeling the rack across some gravel or grass etc it would bottom out. Are they all like that or are there better alternatives? - we're all getting old and fed up of carrying the bugger. i prefer ready made rather than cobbled together so would prefer something that is designed to have wheels than attaching something etc
