1. 2 basses that I loved but had to sell because of neckdive were a Thumb NT5 and a Thunderbird. Thankfully mine does not suffer from this. Actually, I picked the wenge neck as I loved the Thumb's neck and I picked mahogany for the body after the thunderbird (and my 30th anniversary stingray)
2. I've just realised that I may have come across as a smart a$$ which I'm not. I just don't feel the need to practice. I used to remember reading magazies and you'd get these guys who'd been playing for years saying that the maybe picked their bass up once or twice a week. At the time I couldn't believe that if you loved doing something so much you would only do it now and again. Buddy Rich never practiced but then again he was $h!t hot.
3. Usually active pickups are potted from experience so it makes it nigh on impossible to get into them. How about making it easier on yourself and getting a prewired harness? I've got one coming tomorrow to try in my Warmoth P bass and am hellish at soldering. as far as I know they do different versions for active and passive pickups but I could be remembering some random information about something else. You can more or less get what you want - Mine is a 2 band, single pickup one with a main volume and stacked treble and bass so as to avoid drilling another hole in the bass.
4. Don't have a Gecko but I do have a Warmoth. Mine is a '54 reissue precision. Mahogany body, Wenge neck and Ebony fretboard. Everything is gold right down to the frets. Their stuff is first rate and unless you get a maple fretboard there's little you have to do to get them up and running. Its easily the best bass I have ever owned and not even slightly neck heavy. Its a welcome change from the usual Ash/Alder/Maple/Rosewood basses that you find on the high street without going exotic as it gives you access to a whole lot of woods that are normally only available from the boutique guys without paying boutique prices. I put my current one together for about £600 which is around the same as a second hand MIA Fender. I should be getting my next one through at the beginning of October. I'll probably take pics as I'm building it to show exactly how easy it is to assemble. I managed to get this one done for a total of £500. They are a bit of a gamble as they are considered parts basses and you'll lose a fair bit it it turns out not to be the one for you.
5. The Police - "When the world is Running Down" I read Sting's autobiography when I was on holiday last month and have been listening to them quite a bit recently. This will be followed by AC/DC - "Let There Be Rock"
6. Its funny but I very rarely pick up the bass at home and haven't practiced regularly at home for maybe 8 years but I am playing at the best I have ever played in my life and enjoying it more than I have ever done as well. My wedding band doesn't practice. We have 3 songs to learn for this weekend so the usual format is that I will listen to them for the first time on Saturday afternoon, write out the chords and go to the gig. We'll then play them at the gig. If we like any of them then they will be added to our setlist, if not they'll be filed away until such time as we are asked to play them again. This is a big diference to when I was first learning. I drove the neighbours nuts for years practicing every minute of the day that I could. I find that if I take a break from a song for long enough I will play it completely differently when I play it again and its almost like playing a new song.
7. I don't play with 2 guitarists but my guitarist in the rock band plays a Les Paul through a Peavey 5150 which is a 120w combo and I have absolutely no problem being heard and don't have to turn up that loud either. Another vote for a Schroeder 1212L cab. I've got a Vectra but I can get my amp which is in a 4u rack, the cabinet, my bass, cab stand, keyboard stand to sit my rack on and my bag of leads in the boot without folding the seats down.
8. My bass gear to date: Peavey TNT160 combo - lasted one gig before being traded in for Trace 7210 combo and then added Trace 1048H to give me a 6x10" set up. Band got a PA so I downsized and got: Gallien Krueger 800RB and a Trace 1153 and swapped out the 200w 8ohm speaker for a 300w 4ohm one. Used that setup for years then after a particlularly bad gig sold the lot and bought: Hartke HA5500 and a Behringer BA410 cab. Amp was good but really heavy. All 4 aluminium cones in the Behringer cab blew. Kind of reminicent of the scene at the beginning of Back to the Future when Marty plays a chord through that 10' speaker with the little guitar. They sent me a replacement and I immediately sold it. Then bought an Ashdown RC Evo 500 blah blah blah with 2 15" cabs. Sounded wooly, blew one of the speakers. Decided that small, light and good quality was the answer so bought a GK700RB II and Schroeder 1212L. Best looking set up was the Trace in all its 6x10" glory. Worst sounding was the Ashdown stuff. Shoddiest was the Behringer - you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Lightest, Best sounding, best quality, easiest to set up and easiest to adjust would have to go to my current setup. I'm also with Born 2B Mild as most of the controls on the GK are set flat. In fact my setup is so good for what I want that I don't need any controls on my bass and if GK did an amp with just gain, output volume, a tuner mute, active bass pad button, boost, an input from the bass, a speakon output and a DI out then I'd have it. Easily the dirtiest, punchiest and best all-round sound that I have ever had. Can't wait to get my Warmoth '56 P bass up and running when it's ready.
9. how about the Schroeder 1515? http://www.schroedercabinets.com/1515.htm only 31kg
10. I had my bass at Jimmy Moon's for a fret dress and because some nutter had installed a Warwick JAN III and put it in the wrong place so I had him do this and check the electronics as the same nutter isn't very good at soldering. Very impressed with his work but it is a bit out of the road if you don't have a car. Its about a 5 minute walk from Crossmyloof train station - yes you read right - Crossmyloof. It looks the type of place to harbour soap dodgers and could be the home of the infamous 'Glasgow Shower'
11. Have you tried the Trace website? http://www.trace-elliot.co.uk/support_3.ph...g=GB&lan=UK its listed under discontinued products in the 7-band range.
12. A similar problem that i have been encountering for the past few years is that a large number of hotels seem to be selling off land to build houses on. They then have to fit sound level meters as the people who bough the houses then complained about the noise!
13. Last night's gig was fantastic. I've not been happy with my sound for a while now as I have had to keep the gain low and the DI send low otherwise it would overdrive the desk. I usually leave the adjustments to the guitarist but decided to have a gander at the desk. I pressed the 20dB pad button and went back to my amp. I was able to turn the gain and the send up quite a bit before getting anywhere near the level it as at before. The resulting changes enabled me to get the GIVE overdrive to kick in on my GK 700RB II head and I was back sounding like my old self again. I had also been trying TI flats on the bass for the past couple of gigs but they're like rubber bands to me and I just couln't get a decent sound from them so I had changed back to a fresh set of Optima Gold strings yesterday morning. Anyway, to the gig: Everyone was really up for a good time and loved everything we played and because they were so into it and we really enjoyed the sound and everything else, it definitely rated as one of the best gigs of the year. We got asked for about a dozen songs that we had never played before, luckily we knew enough of them to have a bash. Something that may be a bit of good advice - if you're asked to play a song by someone try to avoid playing one in an unusual time signature. We got asked to play something by Pink Floyd and I started playing "Money". Not easy if you're not confident playing in 7/8.
14. I'm afraid that there was 'more entertaining' program than topless darts - It was of course 'painted ladies'. We did a gig once in a used car salesroom. It was the owner's 40th birthday and his wife decided to surprise him. They cleared out some of the cars and we set up. It was really weird playing and being able to look outside as all the shoppers stopped and looked as they were passing. We played our first wake a few months ago. We were booked to play at a pub that we'd done a few times before but the week before we were due to play, the guy who booked the bands threw a seven / bought the farm / popped his cloggs / etc. They were originally going to cancel the band but it turns out that we were his favourite so they decided to keep us booked for the night. Only need to do a bar mitzvah now to have a full house of gig types
15. Hi i think you misread my post. Mine has the threaded aluminium piece behind the main frame. It was my old SKB one that had the captive nuts.
16. Another one not mentioned yet is Nathan East Anyone who can play up and down a 6 string bass effortlessly, while dancing and with a huge grin on his face is cool in my book. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMzOuWMTPYQ
17. I was just thinking about some of the basses I've had over the years - some right crackers. Warwick Thumb NT5, 20th & 30th Anniversary Stingrays, Modulus Flea, About 6 other stingrays, 6 Rickenbacker 4003s including the greenest Blueboy one ever, a 4000, Fender 1973 Telecaster bass, Early Squier JV & SQ basses, 2x '51 reissues, a few 6 stringers, 2x 8 stringers and 2x 12 stringers amongst others. I've had around 60 basses in my time but I only ever take 1 to a gig. Always have done so having all of these basses at one time would be a waste to me. In the next couple of months I'll be down to 2 - My gold '54 Warmoth which is about to get a Bartolini active circuit in it and my vintage spec '54 Warmoth that should be here by October. One for the wedding band and one for the rock bands. I suppose if money was no object I'd have a lot more basses but only really for the sake of having them. Mainly Fenders that marked certain periods or rarities such as a '51 P, a '53, '57 single coil, '57 split coil, custom colours, '68 Telecaster. Other early landmark instruments such as Rickenbacker 1999, '76 Stingray, Gibson EB1. I think that if you're happy having these basses and they all mean something to you or have a use then there isn't a problem. If it was a case of "what the hell am I doing with all of these basses?" then I'd reconsider keeping them all.
18. Mine is called Goldie funnily enough
19. I currently play in a few different bands. In my 2 rock bands there is no PA support so my cab provides the out front sound and in my wedding band my bass goes into a desk. With the wedding band, my cab goes on a stand angled up towards me to act as a monitor. With the rock bands, it is still on the stand but facing forwards towards the audience. Now the problem is that I always keep the settings on my amp constant and adjust the tone with my bass but the different setups require me to have 2 different EQ settings on my amp - one for the rock bands, one for the wedding band. Is there something to allow me to simply press a button rather than muck about with my settings at every gig? I like to keep things simple.
20. You'd have to be about 11 feet tall to carry it in its gig bag without it scraping along the road. Ideal for a Cheap trick tribute band.
21. Looks exactly like the ones i have. I have a 4 unit for my amp & tuner and another 6u with 120lbs of power amps inside. Never let me down. Better than the POS SKB rack that I used to have before it fell apart. If its like mine, it uses a second piece of aluminium behind the fixed rack mounting rather than the captive nuts on the SKB ones to secure the screws. The trick is to loosten off all the screws that attach this to the rack mounting as the threads are often not lined up front to back. I've had mine 2 years now and have put equipment in and out of them with no problem. As with all lower end gear there is bound to be variations in quality so you maybe got a duff one.
22. I thought I'd seen it all http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-PRO-6-NECK-GUITA...1QQcmdZViewItem Only a real man could play one of these. :brow: slightly expensive or does it include a course of treatments with a chiropractor?
23. And the green one has gone. The other 12 and the acoustic finish tomorrow and I am still taking offers on them.
24. Most 12 string guys use a plectrum but I have always played fingerstyle.
25. 2 Things I don't understand about the seller: Only ever one picture of the bass which is generally at the same angle very time. Not enough to get anyone going really. Most of the basses don't have strings on them in said picture. If i was trying to get a good amount of money I would be taking lots of pictures and making the basses more presentable.
