I never took JE seriously until a couple of years ago when I listened to the solo'd bass on won't get fooled again. The huge problem was that the bass was never loud enough in the mix most of the time so I couldn't hear what everyone was raving about. I could be wrong but wasn't Roger going to the get the spanish archer and be replaced by Boz Burrell many moons ago because he wasn't good enough? (no pun intended)

One of the early instruction videos I got was Nathan East and ever since I have always practiced cross string octave runs. Sorry, that makes me sound like I'm being a smart Rse. I love that song but don't have a band that I would be able to do it with out of the 3 that I'm in. "What is Hip?" by TOP is kind of similar with the fast cross string octaves.

I've been using ER20s now for the past couple of months and can't believe the difference. I now can't play without them! they are awsome - i originally bought them to use when playing in my pub covers band as there is no PA so my cab has to be turned up louder than I would use it when it is being used as a monitor normally. I would come away from gigs with ringing in my ears for at least 3 or 4 days so after 2 gigs I decided enough was enough and paid the grant sum of about a tenner for them. I now use them for all gigs and practices.

I've been using a giraffe one now for a good few years. Currently use it for my Schroeder 1212L but it has been used with a 4x10" many times in the past so it'll take whatever you've got (as long as its not a 2x15")

I have been using initial citylink for the past 5 years. Cheap as you like and to date I have never had a damaged parcel. the average for a bass in a bag is £13 and £15 with a case.

We played with Ray Lewis a few years ago - he was one of the singers from the 4 tops. When I was 15 I got lessons from James Finnegan after he left Hue & Cry and before Stiltskin. The bass player from Snow Patrol played my bass one night. About 1998 I was playing with one of my pub bands. after we finished I was off to a club with a girl and the guitarist asked if I would leave my bass so they could do a bit more so I did and the guy that played it was the dude from SP. Apparently he's left handed but I'm not. This was a few years before SP formed. We were going to back Graham Bonnet when he was touring the UK a couple of years ago but the band went tits up so I missed my chance to play the old rainbow song "since you've been gone"

I have to say that initially I was worried that I had made the wrong move as my Ashdown ABM115 had so much bottom end boom. After a few gigs i am absolutely over the moon. I now realise that the Ashdown was just boom with little definiton. I now find that I need to use a fraction of the volume on my amp that I used to. the sound is fantastic. I think subconsciously I wanted a Billy Sheehan / Chris Squire sound because that is what I have. I am primarily a finger player and always set up my amps and basses for this but i now find that i have the most amazing slap and pick sounds available as well with minimal adjustment. My whole set up comprises the 1212L, a GK 700RB II and my main bass - a '51 reissue Japanese precision. I can now also get my gear into the gig with 2 trips instead of 3 so less carrying time. I carry my 1212L and rack wwith my cable bag on one trip and my stands and bass in the second. Easy peasy. No more wheeling a big heavy cab around. I will be doing my first gig on Friday with no pa in Selkirk but I have no doubt that the sound will be ace and plenty loud

I would like to get other peoples view points about last week's gig. I was looking forward to this for ages. I bought tickets the day they came out. I am a huge Chilis/Flea fan to the extent that I have had 7 stingrays, a Modulus Flea and am currently on my second Gallien Krueger amp. And a chilis tattoo on my arm. Not to mention many sets of GHS Flea boomers strings, DOD envelope filter, nearly dyed my hair blue for the "by the way" tour. They came on with a very long jam before beginning the first song. They played a lot of album songs that the average person would not have heard of before. They played about 5 songs that I had never heard of before - this is bearing in mind that i have every song ever recorded by them so they must either be songs that they have written on the road or covers of other bands' songs by bands that i have not heard of before. Anthony was off stage a lot of the night. Don't get me wrong, the songs that they did were s*@t hot but there was too much arseing(sp) around and not enough songs that people actually knew. Don't forget the £3.50 bottles of wife beater with 4" foam head, no food and no programmes. All in all very disappointing. If you own "Off the Map" on DVD don't go to see the Chilis. As far as i am aware this is the best concert that they have done and is how I will remember them. I will never go to see them ever again unless they decide to actually give a s£$t. I used to buy into the whole give it the funk attitude that they talked about but now it seems like a bunch of BS since they sold out to pop music. eg. I saw the Eagles last year. probably not a band that would need to sign on at the dole office but refreshing to find a band that has been touring for years that are still so much into it. That is still the best concert I have been to with the Floyd in 1994 in London a very close second Rant over - what do you think?

That pretty much hits the nail on the head. Fender Japan was set up in 1981 and the basses were modeled after the vintage ones - ie the ones that made them the money when the company was first set up. Unfortunately for Fender the Japanese ones were miles better than the US ones. Fender saw high quality copies coming from this now legendary factory so set about having 'budget' versions of their own range made there - some allegedly using US parts. Ended up being higher quality than the US ones. Fender bought the Squier string company in the 60s but I think that this was the first time that they used the name anywhere. i would still rather have a CIJ bass than any MIA or MIM but there aren't that many available direct in this country.

On the underside of the pickup are 4 polepieces with screw heads Do i take 2 from one side or one from each?

This isn't a Squier - it is a Fender Japan bass. the Japanese Fender basses made between 1982 - 84 also had the JV serial number. The same goes for the SQ models. As far as the Squier's go - generally a serial number of JV0xxxx has a good chance of having the large Fender, small Squier logo anything from JV1xxxx will be the other way around.

I've used these out live before on several occasions. really impressive. I've got another see through blue one on the way that i got for £35 on fleabay. Heavy though - not Warwick heavy but still heavy - thick padded strap recommended i don't believe a bass has to be expensive to be good. this is the cheapest bass I have ever owned but not the worst. the most expensive was a Warwick thumb NT5 which would've retailed around the £1800 - £2000 mark

here she is after the first sanding. That's as far as i can go until i get some sand and sealer onto it. most of the dark parts are needing filled before i can can sand any smoother.

Yes, ebonol is like artificial ebony. My mighty mite neck has it (it is unlined). Its meant to last longer than the real thing. There is also Phenolic resin which is like another plastic coating - you clean that with.........................WD40! As for wearing grooves on fretless boards. it normally take years of use to mark a board enough for it to have to be sanded. the best tip you can have from me is, regardless of what type of strings you use, slide side to side as opposed to bending the string up and down - that is what makes the snail trails up and down the board worse.

How early a JV did you get?

Too tired after the gig last night so I thought I'd wait until today. First impressions were that it is completely different to the Ashdown ABM115 that I was using - kind of made the Ashdown sound very boomy by comparison. After mucking around with the setting on my amp, it became evident that my bass badly needs a set up. The sound is very clear, not as much low end coming out of it as my Ashdown but I think that it is better this way but Jorg did say that after a few gigs I would get a bit more. Volume wise - my Ashdown had been fitted with an Eminence Delta 500w 4ohm driver, this cab only needs half the volume for the same output. Only the first gig but I am very impressed so far in terms of output, overall sound, build quality and the fact that I can carry it and my rack in one go meaning that i only have 3 trips to the car instead of 4

after you've used the T-cut, you need to polish it back to shiny again

ABM500 RC II - sh*te Am I allowed to say that? the worst amp I have ever owned bar none - fart city Trace elliot were fantastic at producing vague sounding "our bass sound is identical to everyone elses" amps and cabs - even the mighty 1048H but the follow up - Ashdown are hellish at best Oooohhhhhhhh Matron
