As said before, it depends on the brand of flats and the sound that you are after. I play with quite a bright, percussive sound and I couldn't get it right with the stock D'addario rounds so changed to a set of D'addario flats which are quite bright and middy. I am very happy with the sound I have now. The only bass I have ever owned that sounded dreadful with flats with my MM Sterling and that was using Chromes as well. It sounded dead boxy and crap and I could not coax a decent sound from it at all and ended up using EXL roundwounds on it.

The most disappointing basses I ever owned were a Warwick Thumb NT5 and a Modulus Flea bass. Both regarded as great basses and am sure that they are in the right hands but I thought that they were terrible in terms of playability and sound. Conversely my Harley Benton Jazz is worth virtually nothing second hand but is one of, if not the best sounding and playing jazz bass I have ever owned

Do Diddley bass? none more rectangular

In less than 7 days it arrived today form China. At first glance the fingerboard is a nice piece of slightly flamed maple. It has a coating on it that looks like a typical poly neck finish. I'll be using flats on it so it should be ok. It looks to be very well made. When you hold it up to the light, it's not perfect but from further away it does look really good. At under £60 I'm not going to complain. I just need to decide whether to withdraw my Geddy Jazz, fit it to my Thomann Deko jazz or buy a cheap precision body and a set of pickups. I have most of the other parts that I need so may go with this option. Gear4Music do natural finish P bass ash bodies for £40 plus postage which are all ready to go. I'l post a couple of pics when I'm back home.

I don't buy back up basses anymore as invariably I would end up selling or trading them for something else as I never used them. I have a few basses that are all different in some way and that I would gig on their own so each bass is effectively a main bass that I will use when I feel like using it. I have no problem switching between a £3000 bass or a £140 Harley Benton depending on what I fancy using that night. There's actually something extremely satisfying about having such a cheap bass that plays so well and sounds so good.

Since I changed from a 5 back to a 4 I had been using mine with the double stop lever so I could tune the E to D & B quickly but have found recently that I don't really use the B that often so have changed back to the original lever for going to D. Just remember to get the vaseline on the lever for smooth action - ooooh matron. I use a custom gauge of Chromes on my Precision as I prefer the balance - 45, 60, 80, 110. The 110 on the E means that I could still go down to B for the occasional song and the string wouldn't be too floppy. I used the Rotosound Billy Sheehan strings once which have the 110 on the E but they lasted about 3 gigs before being completely dead - I usually get 8 or 9 full wedding sets out of a set of strings before I need to change them - obviously longer on the Chromes, much longer

I always preferred the MAG 4x10" cabs. They had a better sound to me when I used them with my GK1001RBII at the time. Plus they went ridiculously loud as well which is handy when you are trying to be heard over 2 guitarists out of their nuts on speed Weight no option and if I was still playing in a rock band then I would still have them

No that wasn't what I meant. You had said that a pig ugly car wouldnt sell yet I'm stuck behind them most weekends. I wasn't talking about amps at all.

No it doesn't matter but if they had wanted to make it like the original then it would have had 1 screw. I'm guessing it was to keep costs down by using a part that they already had - same goes for the bridge

I have to disagree - if you're ever in a tail back of cars out in the countryside and get a chance to look at the car holding everyone up, chances are that it's a fugly POS that you cannot name because only people who don't care about driving, just getting from A to B, buy them. Whether it be the one that looks like a roller skate or the other thing that looks like Postman Pat's van, you can pretty much guarantee that you won't know what it is or who makes it but they sell loads of them to daydreamers and driving sightseers so that you can be held up for no good reason

I bought one for my Warmoth '57 single coil P bass and it didn't move. Easy enough to replace I suppose if I do get one

Nooooooooooooo I really love the look of the Mustang, then saw the '51, then the walnut Precision. I can see at least one of them being bought. Just a pity they aren't doing the '51 in the Colonel Mustard finish or that would have definitely been the one. Just to be pedantic but shouldn't the tug bar on the '51 being a single screw one?

I've never ever received a bass that was perfectly set up for me and in my early years the few times I did take my bass to be set up, they didn't get it the way I wanted it either so the only option left was to learn to do it myself. Considering the number of basses I've had, I've had very few cases of anything being badly needing a set up. I can recall one high fret which I filed down myself and a bass with a dead pickup and that's about it
