  1. It's not a matching headstock, it's a neck made entirely from rosewood but I have to agree that it does look odd. I'd much prefer it with an all maple neck but then maybe that's why they've gone all rosewood cos there's a million all maple necked Fenders out there
  2. I really wanted to like the Rickenbacker that I bought at the tail end of last year. They look amazing but after replacing the pickup cover with a bezel, fitting Hipshot Ultralites to help balance it better and so on I had to admit that it was a piece of stinky poo and got shot of it.
  3. Didn't sales of Les Pauls soar after Appetite for Destruction was released despite the fact that Slash used copies of Les Pauls complete with Gibson Logo'd headstocks? I don't think that Slash would have been able to afford the real thing at the time so surely it was good publicity for the Gibson brand despite not actually being a Gibson. Later on they did release a Gibson version of his copy which is, again, great for Gibson, despite them actually making a replica of a replica
  4. I've been tempted to try Elixirs but am still unsure. I generally get 8 gigs out of a set of D'addario EXLs - that's wedding/function length gigs. Strings Direct sell my current EXL165 choice at £22.99 and the equivalent Elixir strings are £42.99 so I would need to be getting 15 gigs from the Elixirs to break even as it were so I would be disappointed if they started going dull after 12. I don't use a plectrum, I don't really sweat and I make sure that my hands are always clean so should I expect more than this?
  5. I always thought it was a reference to gay sex since the last line is "give me every inch of your love"
  6. And they now have your login details 👍 Ok maybe not but there's the chance that they do
  7. It's a guitar tuner rather than a bass one but I thought that it would still have been a licenced tuner at that price. The bass tuners start at £12 for the licenced ones. I've bought from this seller before and everything was as per the listing
  8. Another is Distant Sun by Crowded House. Simple but very melodic
  9. One I've recently rediscovered is Lovely Day by Bill Withers. One of those songs that instantly lift your mood and also a great bass line
  10. I love the Mustangs but always think that P & J pickups look out of proportion on such a small bass, as did those ones with the big mudbucker
  11. I have the contents of my cupboard alphabetised from Actimel all the way to zucchini although problems arise when I'm faced with whether to put the Pot Noodles under P or N. I still have no idea what a key performance indicator is
  12. I've had a couple of these including the older one that could be angled back and I remain dubious if they actually do anything or if they're just for psychological purposes to make you feel better about the big cab blowing air at the back of your knees
  13. I use a Hercules stand for mine - one of the ones that grab the neck as you place it on
  14. I'm with chris_b on this. I generally change my setup to suit the band I am playing with at the time. My last band was a loudish rock band so I had a Hartke LH1000 with Laney NX410 & NX115 cabs. The latest incarnation of my rig with the wedding band is a Radial Bassbone which also serves as my DI into a QSC K12.2 for my on stage sound. My advice would be to keep some money aside (if you can) and decide once you're in a band what the best rig for your circumstances would be - circumstances being type of band, pa or not, sizes of venue etc BTW a Ray34 is a hell of a bass to be learning on and to be honest I would happily gig that bass myself. Don't think that because it's not the full fat US version that it isn't a good bass
  15. I decided to give the JB75 a try and got it yesterday. Neck was obviously a bit more clubby than the Geddy but I must have got one of the lighter ones. I can't see any joins so I reckon it's a 1 piece body as well. I weighed it and it came in at 9.8lbs, I then weighed my Geddy with much slimmer neck and Ultralites and guess what? 9.8lbs Someone mentioned the pickups not being able to be screwed down and I've found that as well but they are low enough not to cause any issue, although they make the bass appear louder than the Geddy because of their height. Worse case scenario I have a set of Fender pickups that I can fit. I bought it as a backup to the Geddy but I think I am going to gig it this weekend
  16. I found screws that were about 30mm but with a head small enough to fit inside the schaller strap pins and I put superglue on the threads before I screw them in. I've never had one move yet
  17. Been using D'addario EXL165 nickels for a few years now but have just bought myself a set of Prosteels to try for a change
  18. The first blurry picture gives the impression that there are frets but I think the second one shows that it is a lined fretless, I think 🤔
  19. Best P pickups I've ever used were Lollars in both single coil '51 and split varieties and if I ever got myself another precision then It'd be the only choice for me to get another one
  20. After last night's gig I was looking for a DI & eq pedal that had a midrange control and by sheer chance spotted a Radial Bassbone Tonebone for £151 being sold by Amazon. It was one of those anomalies that Amazon have in their pricing from time to time so I couldn't say no to that - should be here next week Went back in this morning and they're back up to £299
  21. Is trying a bass with a thinner neck at a gig an option? Just in case you have the work done to your basses and they still give you grief
  22. I started accidentally in 1987 as me and my best mate at the time were going to enter a talent contest miming to The Springstein song Dancing in the Dark and another mate suggested that I borrow his acoustic to complete the look. I was really into Queen back then so tried to play bits just using open strings and found that I could pick up bits and pieces so for my 12th birthday was given a junior sized acoustic but realised that I loved the look of John Deacon's Red Precision that he used in the One Vision video. That Christmas I was given the choice of an electric guitar or bass. Everyone wanted me to get the guitar but me being incredibly stubborn decided to get the bass. Similar to one of the basses above, it was a Marlin Slammer, and for all intents and purposes was the double of said Precision used by John Deacon. £99 out of the Littlewoods catalogue. I had to get an amp so having completely no idea stumbled into my local music shop which would become my home for the next 10 years and my dad bought me a Squier 15w guitar amp with the finishing touch being a yellow curly cable like Brian May's This served me well until I saw the picture of John Deacon's maple fretless on the gatefold sleeve of Live Killers and took a large rough file to the fretboard. Needless to say the bass ended up in the skip a couple of months later to be replaced by a fantastic second hand Riverhead Jupiter for the princely sum of £199 in Sound Control in Glasgow
  23. Save the slap for the Youtube videos 😅 Seriously though, I've never had any really reason to use it yet according to Youtube, everything has to and indeed must be slapped. I'm with Ped on this. A wee slap or pop here and there can add something new to a song but continuous slap sounds like someone pushing a drum kit down a flight of stairs
  24. At least it's in the UK so you won't get stung with import tacks
  25. I've been playing in wedding bands since 1995. I've only just added in a Behringer BDI21 as I stopped using my Wireless which had its own DI out. I've gone back to a passive Jazz bass with two volume controls so started using my Korg DT10 to both mute the signal and tune. My Behringer BEQ700 is there to add some mids as I play with both volumes up full. I've been on the effects merry-go-round for years and eventually go back to using nothing. What I have is out of necessity rather than buying things for the sake of it. Start out using one effect/processor at a time. If you think that you need to add anything after this point then add another one. If you buy a whole pile of effects then you'll either go nuts trying to get them all working at the same time or sell them on again without using them.
