Hipshot Ultralite fitting - loose in the hole (oo-er)
Delberthot replied to fretmeister's topic in Bass Guitars
I had this problem too but used paper cut to the required width and wound it around the outside of the bit that goes through the back until it felt tight in the hole then taped it on. Not ideal but it worked -
Just ignore me, pilot error 🤪

I posted earlier in a for sale thread quoting another member's post. I've gone back in and my post isn't there. How queer

I remember a thread from a year or so ago regarding using various lubes such as nose grease on your fingers but I thought at the time and still do that surely that's going to deposit more gunk in between the windings of your strings making them go dead quicker? For me it was a matter of finding the correct strings and string height. I use D'addario EXL nickels as they are the smoothest roundwound strings I have found after years of using flats. String gauge is also crucial - too light and the strings feel like rubber bands, too heavy and it can become a real effort to play. A case in point is that I use 45, 65, 85, 110. I tried the balanced tension strings either side of this. EXL220BT are 40, 55, 70, 95 and EXL160BT are 50, 67, 90, 120. They both felt wrong so I went back to the ones that I normally use Unfortunately everyone is different so it is up to you to find the correct balance that matches your playing. A second issue is that it can also depend on your bass so if you find yourself changes basses regularly then you can soon find yourself going through lots of strings to get the right ones for each bass

With very little pressure I tighten the screw until it stops moving - correctly or incorrectly I think that if I tighten it any further then I'll be tightening it further than it was originally

So, just how many basses do you own ????
Delberthot replied to musicbassman's topic in General Discussion
I have my Musicman Sterling and a Geddy Lee Jazz which I keep meaning to get around to selling. Personally I only need 1 bass for everything. I would have to be doing something pretty specialised (like playing in a Kiss tribute band) to warrant getting anything else -
I've also discovered that the ones I enjoy listening to can often be the ones I don't enjoy playing - eg Le Freak. That should be my song as a bass player but I find it incredibly dull to play, even the bass solo bit later on There will always be songs that you don't like within a band unless you are the one that decides the set. I enjoy playing Crazy In Love and Uptown Funk but can't stand listening to either one of them.

Collecting Basses/Guitars as an investment
Delberthot replied to StuarDaddy's topic in General Discussion
Not rare or valuable in the grand scheme of things but I actually sold my 30th Anniversary Musicman Stingray 4 string because it was such a thing of beauty that I was terrified of damaging it or even using it. -

The serial number dates this bass to between 2007 to 2010. During this time there was a transition from CIJ to MIJ. The first part of the stamp on the neck suggest a 2008 but I can't confirm if the rest of the stamp means 03/12/08 or if it means something else The "JB-GL" stamp on both neck and body confirm that it is a Geddy Lee body and neck and it is possible to get the action ridiculously low on these. I have one of the early models with the "Limited Edition" neck plate that I will be putting up for sale shortly. It has a B serial number so I had to do a lot of digging to get the correct date. Most websites were telling me 1985-6 despite the Geddy not going into production until 1998

I had already set up the on board EQ on the QSC so at the beginning of a gig before we sound check I make whatever slight adjustments I need to on the bass. I love simple so this suits me perfectly. Plus it's a great sound so I don't feel the need to add anything else
-
I began by buying various pedals but got bored so I've gone for the most basic setup and loving the sound. I have a Line6 receiver with DI out so I go straight from the transmitter on my bass to the receiver and into the QSC with DI from the receiver going to the desk. I figured that I already have a 3 band EQ on my Sterling so I have what I need without going for any external processors.

Those Copiers Were Fast In The Old Days.

"Due to Ebay rules and regulations, I cannot say what this Bass is without the listing being removed." Allow me: "it's a piece of stinky poo" -
I have no experience of this amp so does this mean that you can't use a single 8ohm cab if your choices are only 4 or 2? For about 99% of my playing career to date I have used a single 8 ohm cab so that would be an odd thing if an amp didn't work at 8ohms

He was Alanis' drummer at the time so I always assumed that it was him but Wikipedia only states that he was in the video - no mention of the actual track
-
And Taylor Hawkins on drums I think 🤔

I found that I got the best sound using only the bridge pickup with the neck pickup completely off and the bridge pickup controls wide open. Unfortunately I found it incredibly uncomfortable to play and ended up selling it but that's for another thread

It will eventually get dusty and need a good clean. My main gigging bass gets cleaned once a year because it lives in its bag when I'm not using it I always thought that the strings would go dead quicker if left out but that could also be complete cobblers There;s also less chance of it getting damaged if it's kept in it's case/bag

Dunlop steel or Ernie Ball cobalt flats?
Delberthot replied to Painy's topic in Accessories and Misc
If you're using superbright stainless steel strings have you thought about nickel plated strings? YMMV but I found my usual D'addario Chromes absolutely dreadful on my Sterling so switched to EXL165s a couple of years ago and love them. They're not too bright and retain their sound for a good while before going dead. Bright s/steel strings to flats might be too big a jump in sound if you're used to the bright zing of them -
When I had to change from a 5 to a 4 due to back issues I was having at the time I still actually needed a 5 string but adapted what I played so that I could still play it on a 4. I have a Hipshot double stop as I need D & B, sometimes on the same song, so I sat at home and worked out how I could make the change mid song so now it comes naturally to flick between the three tunings during songs. I use a 110 E string so that it doesn't get too floppy when I drop the E to B

It was more in response to NickA's post about listing things on the forum - I'd prefer to sell here but Mr Hall forces us to sell Rickenbackers elsewhere. There are quite a few of us on the forum who own them but can't offer them here
-
I try to list everything I have on the forum unless it's a Rickenbacker in which case I had no option but to list it on fleabay. Pain in the bum really as Basschat also allows you the option of trades but Egay is sale only
