  1. I could have just pressed the backpage button and walked away from this thread but is there any reason why anyone has to defend or deride these basses? They are what they are - a tool for us bass players to use. There are many tools out there, it's just a matter of picking the right one and if it doesn't suit then either modify it or try another. I have 2 overrated basses that I enjoy. Neither were perfect for me initially but I made small, reversible modifications and now they suit me and my style of playing. I said that I didn't like Foderas or Alembics but there's no need to defend these basses. The companies wouldn't be in existence if everyone thought the same way that I do. This isn't directed at anyone, just a general observation.
  2. If my memory serves me right I think that it was Virgin that killed off Tower Records
  3. I can't remember the last time I went into a shop and bought a CD. A bit of nostalgia but I fondly remember going into Tower Records in Glasgow. 5 floors of music. I got a lot of what was considered obscure back then like Parliament, The Meters, Funkadelic etc
  4. I've never understood bronze strings on an acoustic. They feel horrible and make that horrible slidey noise when you move your left hand. I had chromes on my Fender acoustic bass and it sounded really good
  5. I think Foderas and Alembics are overpriced. When I hear Stanley Clarke play I can tell he is talented but all I hear is clackety clack. Victor Wooten's bass sound is pretty dire IMO as well. They look well made but I've never heard one that I liked. At the end of the day it's all subjective but the fact that most retailers never have stocks of Rickenbackers available for long would indicate that people are buying them at that price so they are either underpriced or at the right price. If I could afford a new Audi A8 then I would have one in a minute but they're the best part of £70,000 so about 4 times as expensive as my car was new. I would still have one though. 😀
  6. In the past couple of years we've played at a different venue and the fireworks at 12am usually meant the end of the night, even though we were booked until 1am as no one comes back in, instead heading for the bar or bedroom
  7. I checked the QSC website and they recommend 18 gauge right angled cables which are pretty easy to come by - just a pity that you'd need to spend more to get one from QSC with the locking mechanism. Or not if you just want an ordinary one
  8. I don't want to derail the thread too much but unfortunately in our society it breaks down as: had a bad day? - have a drink had a good day? - have a drink does the day end in a "Y"? - then have a drink
  9. We've been playing the same venue for their Christmas party nights for the last 3 years so they know us and trust us - enough to pay us in advance for all of the gigs including hogmanay. I have also noticed in the last couple of days on local Facebook pages that there are a lot of people having gigs cancelled for NYE which is extremely shabby. I honestly wouldn't know what to do if I wasn't playing as I don't drink alcohol.
  10. Well my first thought on powering it up was that I may have got a dud as there was a lot of distortion when playing an open G. It took me a while to work out that it was actually the contents of my house vibrating 😛 I've had a play with it in the house but I am trying to find a rehearsal room with a free hour slot available tomorrow as I need some time to get to grips with it before I gig on 31st I only have one concern which is that when it is sitting in the monitor position, the power and instrument cables and slightly squashed against the ground. I'll probably invest in a right angled power cable
  11. Absolutely - it's been sitting in various cold trucks, vans and warehouses for the past 24 hours so I have it sitting in the living room getting up to temperature before I open it up and try it out
  12. My one has just been delivered and the tote bag was included so I'd definitely chase it up. There's a chance that they simply didn't have any in stock but it would have been nice of them to tell you when you could expect it. PMT are on the QSC website as an official dealer so there shouldn't be any problem getting it - if not contact QSC on their Facebook page, they respond pretty quickly
  13. Absolutely but what I meant was that as soon as I adjusted my playing position to suit the Rickenbacker, it felt the most comfortable of the two basses. I play mine finger style with Fender flats and it still has that amazing sound. Not in the least bit thuddy
  14. A quick look around the internet offered - an explorer case, an EB-3 case, a coffin case but the one that sticks out is that a case for an Epiphone Rivoli bass fits this bass. As long as they kept the dimensions roughly the same then the Jack Casady case should fit the Ripper
  15. You're right but for me it required a change of playing position, strap height etc to be able to enjoy it to the fullest whereas the Sterling is just a plug and play bass or at least was as after a couple of months of playing the Rick, the Sterling feels odd to play now
  16. Most of the other players started off on Ricks and moved to other basses. Off the top of my head John Entwistle, John Deacon, Roger Waters, Pete Quaife & Geddy Lee. I think it was either Waters or Quaife who said that the neck ended up like a banana when he changed strings so that was the reason to change
  17. I have a EBMM Sterling and a Rick. I changed the tuners to Ultralites on both basses as I found them both slightly neck heavy. Both basses have their place although I'm enjoying the Rick more at the moment as it's still relatively new but will be using the Sterling when we go into the recording studio at the beginning of next year
  18. Joliet Jake was John Belushi's character who was released from Joliet correctional facility at the start of the movie
  19. I own a Musicman and a Rickenbacker so everything is overrated 😀 My last car was a 280bhp VW Scirocco R but my current car is a Skoda Rapid 1 litre - I like to keep everyone guessing 😉
  20. I got a set of licenced Ultralites for my Rickenbacker here and they were £64 delivered. You just tell the seller the configuration that you want I've had licenced ones on my Sterling for the past few years and I didn't feel the need to spend double the amount for the USA ones as these ones are really good. They are more of a satin finish than shiny chrome though
  21. The way I have taken it is that the RCF 735 & 745 are superior but maybe more than is required for what we are looking to use it for. The QSC K10.2 is plenty enough to be gigging with as a bass monitor but the K12.2 gives you a bit more headroom just in case
  22. I think I may have discovered the donor piece of wood used Just under £20 from your local Travis Perkins
  23. Get it just in time to put the tree back up again (ooer missus)
