Did your band improve AFTER a player left?
Delberthot replied to Arrowsmith's topic in General Discussion
Yes - In our case a drummer who played far too loud and far too fast - ironically he was a drum teacher 😄 He had a midlife crisis and systematically fell out with everyone he knew. I'd known him 20 years and will never talk to him again. As soon as he was gone the band was so much better and much more fun -
Over powerd gallien Krueger backline 600

I've always been a big fan of the MAG 4x10" cabs. I think that they sound better than the ABM ones. I used 2 cabs with a Gallien 1001RB, it sounded epic and went stupidly loud -
I haven't had this long but I think that this is my final attempt to bond with a Stingray. I have had many over the years but this is my first 2 band one. It looks incredible and it plays really well but I just can't get a sound that I am happy with. The body is dated January 1998 but the neck plate dates it to the beginning of March 1998. When I first got it I took the neck off it as it was grubby as expected for a 20 year old neck with a hand rubbed finish. I lightly sanded it and then gave it 4 coats of Birchwood Casey tru oil as recommended by EBMM. This was then lightly rubbed down with 000 steel wool. It still looks shiny but is really smooth to the touch. The tuners went into a container of cola to remove the dirt and then they were carefully dried off and put back together. The pickup poles were slightly oxidised as they do so I decided that, instead of taking a wire brush to them and having lots of metal filings sticking to the pickup, I would buy a closed cover pickup cover. I also took the opportunity to level out the poles to combat the quiet G string issue that these seem to have. This was done by gently pushing the poles down and it could be easily reversed if needs be. There are 2 dings on the body which are fortunately on the back so not noticable when you are playing. The first is on the upper horn near the strap button and the other is at the opposite corner near the jack. There are also a couple of other small dings around the headstock. Everything on it functions 100% and I made a slight adjustment to the truss rod so I know that it works as expected. It is strung with my usual D'addario EXL165, it has a brand new Duracell battery and comes in a functional gig bag. I can't work the colour out: I think that it is sunburst but in a certain light it looks more like cherry burst. It has been incredibly hard to photograph the colour but either way, it is a really nice colour.

When I had my Warmoth '54 Precision made I was really into Sting's tone at the time. He uses a Seymour Duncan 51P bass Stack pickup. I managed to find one on Ebay and it was indeed a mighty sounding pickup http://customshop.seymourduncan.com/51-p-bass-stack/

Depending on the finish you could try high bond tape

Another thing I would always suggest is moving the bass around during the course of a gig so that it's not sitting on the same part of the shoulder for the entire night.

I'm not sure how much he actually paid for it but I heard he was going to party like it was £19.99

Absolutely - You don't hear the bass at all at the gig for the chest thumpingly loud kick drum but that's another thread entirely
-
I'm beginning to think that I've had my money's worth out of them so it might be time to change. Those new ones do look good. I remember a thread some time ago about the Loxx ones but no one has mentioned them since. Those new Schaller ones may be worth a try

Some of my straplocks have become a bit difficult to operate - is there something I can apply to the mechanism to get it moving more freely to make it easier to remove the strap from the bass? I've seen something mentioned on the forum before but I can't seem to find it Although I suppose this should probably be in repairs and technical maybe (?)

What I would get might not be what you would get. It will depend on how you like your string spacing, the sound, pickup configuration etc Having said that, if I was in the market for a 5 string fretless then it would be without a doubt a Stingray

Worst bass you've ever played that you did not own.

Anything that was in Sound Control on Jamaica Street in Glasgow when the basses were downstairs. I went in with the intent of buying something really good but every bass that I pulled off the wall was so badly setup to make it impossible to try out properly. I can't remember what it was but I found something I liked and asked the guy about having it set up. He told me that if I bought it that they would set it up for me. The whole point was that it needed something done to it to make it playable in the first place before I even considered buying it. -
I was doing that with the exact same same amp about 10 years ago. I used to have my cab on an angled cab stand so the amp would always be on its side in a rack next to the cab on the floor
-
Our PA subs have wheels but are designed to sit on their sides on rubber feet. This is what I used to do when I was using big cabs - big wheels on the bottom to roll everything in but I screwed in extra feet to that they could stack sitting on their sides.

When I buy any bass I set the eq to how I like it and this is what goes to the desk. If my FOH sound needs to be changed then that's the job of the mixing desk Any tweeks that are made to the amp to change my on stage sound to prevent booming etc do not affect what goes out front as I have my amp set to output the DI pre-eq. If you adjust the settings on your bass during the gig then you are changing what comes out front. Unless there is something specifically wrong with your FOH sound which cannot be fixed by adjusting the settings on the desk then you could be messing up the balance that you got when you did the soundcheck.

I changed from a Stingray 5 to a Sterling 4 due to a shoulder problem I had. A wide padded strap can help but for me it's moving around as much as I can on stage as it moves the bass around your shoulder instead of it sitting at the one point all night
-
The would be my first reaction as well - before spending lots of cash on trying various things for them to moan at, ask them what they would like. They've told you that they want to feel the bass but complained when you put an amp on stage so that they could feel the bass. It's like someone asking you to make a chocolate cake but that they don't want it to contain any chocolate, or be a cake

To me punchiness has as much to do with the bass as the amp and you certainly have the right bass to be punchy so I would also say Gallien Krueger for the amp
-
I've found more at £29.99 and decided to get one for my Stingray https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Blake-Bravo-bass-guitar-case-New/253609036586?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 Still 5 left when I posted this - the seller has it at BIN or best offer but says that the best offer was a mistake but £30 is still cheap for what seems a decent gig bag
-
I nearly ordered a headless Status Stealth 6 fretless a few years back when they were still around the £2000 mark - now I won't go above 4 strings I also keep a cheap fretless in the livingroom to remind me why I don't play fretless - I can't get the punchy, snappy tone that I want from a fretless so there it sits as a reminder. Still doesn't stop me wanting one from time to time
-
I've had a couple of 15" setups including 2 x Ashdown ABM115s, Trace 1524 2x15" and the V-type 1528 which at one point I paired with a V-type 1248H 4x12" and Gallien Krueger 1001RB for 96kgs of thunder

Crack Converters Jazz-Ray
Delberthot replied to lowregisterhead's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The serial number dates the neck plate at 1960-61 and the neck, if original is 87-91 when they changed to the 6 bolt neck. The pickups will be 1990ish to 95 It's certainly interesting -
I think equally importantly is what bass do you play? Some combinations go well together depending on what sort of sound you are after - for me it is Musicman and Gallien Krueger
-
I too went from a Rumble 500 combo to GK MB200 & Barefaced One 10. I soon changed the amp to an MB500. The main reason for the change was that I wanted something smaller, lighter and that I could attach to a speaker stand to have it at ear level. The Rumble did sound really good when using both my Yamaha BB1025 and SR5 but my sound has revolved around Gallien Krueger and Musicman for a good few years now. I've gone in different directions with both bass and amp/cab but keep coming back to this combination

I love EMGs as well. They are quite straightforward if you follow the wiring instructions as the wires clip into the pots. The only time you would need to solder would be for the barrel jack socket that theses basses have rather than the usual ones you would find in Fenders etc but I have seen ones made up on Ebay that have the solderless cables attached
