1. The 1975 sound a bit like Walk The Moon to me. I don't think they have much to offer other than nostalgia but then I can be very critical. I love Peter Gabriel's music. Some of my favourites are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0GcqYGv1AA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1bMpke0yVs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY42nrt_nIc
2. I still keep expecting Lem to say something. He was such a big part of my life I remember depping with a wedding band and the main man told me that I played just like a rock bass player. Being a funk player I was disdturbed. I tried to Play Kiled By Death the entire night
3. I would like to put a fresh set of eyes on this and say that I don't think that any one of these people mentioned will be the next generation of favourite bass players. I remember buying bass player magazine in the 90s and seeing Victor Wooten and BIlly Sheehan on every second advert - they have never inspired me to play differently I always remember a big advert with a guy with a bunch of basses - it was Michael Anthony from Van Halen. I like his singing, he played a Musicman Sterling and some Yamaha basses My favourite songs were those that were in the charts when I was first starting out but listening to the charts now there's no discernable bass.. It's all been muffled into background noise so that we can hear the autotune. I ended up listening to tunes that were out in the 70s & 80s and that's never really changed much as there's not been much IMO to trump it. I regard 1993 as one of the best years for pop music where we had Lenny Kravitz "Are You Gonna Go My Way", Peter Gabriel "Steam", Duran Duran "Ordinary World, Faith No More "I'm Easy", Charles & Eddie "Would I lie To You" and more: Check it out here Check it out, there was some diabolical dirge but even the worst song there was better than most of what we have had this century so far. Sax is just a rehashed Lionel Ritchie song and Hello by Adele is just plain miserable. it's actually depressing and I think that Flea, love him or hate him, will be the most popular bass player for a while to come as he's been the most commercially available bass player. Ask anyone outside of this forum and they will have a hard time telling you who Jaco Pastorius, Larry Graham, James Jamerson, Hadien Something, even Billy Gould are unless you are really into a type of music or a specific band. Long gone are the times when bands were encouraged to flourish and develop their song writing capabilites. It's now or nothing and if you're not on the strictly X-factor on ice big brother in the jungle "I'm not a celebrity" bandwagon then you're not going to be remembered for anything. Welcome to the 21st century where everything is disposable. Celebrity means that you know someone famous or have been on another TV program not having done anyting to warrant being famous yourself. It's all over folks so enjoy being in your post apocalyptical shoegazy punk melancholy fusion freeform jazz rock pop ensemble while it lasts
4. The last string I snapped was a B on Warwick Thumb 5 in 2008 because it wasn't tapered. Quick check with the Bass Centre and I had a tapered Elites 135 guage string on its way. Before that it must have been about 1998
5. Just avoid those trolleys where the wheels fold up as they have a tendency to do so while you're moving them and it all goes wrong at this point
6. Playing in a wedding/function band my main bass is a Musicman Stingray 5 string with a Yamaha BB1025 being my backup. I also have a Yamaha BB425 to practice in the house with and a Lindo 4 string fretless to remind me why I never want to buy an expensive fretless to gig with ever again
7. Bought Andy's SR5 over the holidays. Everything went incredibly smoothly and I received it very quickly and exactly as described. Top banana
8. I played for years in a band with a drummer that could not control his volume and tended to overplay all of the time so I began wearing ear plugs to every gig as having a large china symbal battered right next to my left ear wasn't my idea of fun or going home with ringing in my ears. Thankfully I am now in the position of playing with a drummer who can control her volume and now only wear one ear plug in my left ear not fully in to slightly attenuate the high frequencies from the symbals. I am now enjoying things more and not having to crank the top end to hear myself clearly with the ear plugs in and the stage volume is at a sensible level now that we can all turn back down again. I actually have the opposite problem to most of having a fantastic guitarist right next to me who plays too quietly and it's only when he kicks in the boost for solos that I can hear him properly.
9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOs4vsthLD0 I lost my train of thought earlier today and, em, something, help?
10. I've found that this is the case with a number of tutors. I've been trying to find a decent vocal teacher but no one has got back to me. I have absolutely no idea how I know what I do or how to transfer it to someone else or I would've gone down that path years ago as I am completely self taught and just played along to everything when I was young. There are no decent bass teachers in my area that I know of that aren't just guitarists who think that bass is an easy version of guitar and therefore easy to teach.
11. 10 years ago I began the revolving door of basses. In the beginning was a 2000 Musicman Stingray 5 followed by about 120 other basses - Fenders,. Warwicks, Modulus, Aria, Yamaha, Ibanez, Rickenbacker, Warmoth, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 12 strings, fretless, fretted, acoustic, semi acoustic, and so on. Some were sold before they were gigged, some were sold before I got them and some made a gig or 2. Some of the more expensive ones were the most disapppointing. At one point I was taking 2 basses worth £4000+ to pub gigs. Last night I played the 2002 Stingray 5 I bought from Andy Dye at a Hogmanay gig and I felt like I was home again. My mate Mick the guitarist kept turning round all night. He told me at the end of the night it was because it sounded so good.
12. Those look like the same tuners that my MIM Seafoam Green Precision had
13. I bet Phil Taylor, Lemmy and Scott Weiland are having a right old knees up right now So hard to believe that 3 outstanding musicians have gone this year. I was a huge STP fan. Found them on "The Word" in about 1993. It's all gone tits for arse this year
14. On Christmas day I was treated to a Snark Tuner and Herco plectrums which are two very small but very necessary things. Tomorrow (technically today) I'll be treated to a Stingray 5 string and a Line6 G30 courtesy of Andydye and Guitarguitar
15. I lost my wallet in the middle of Falkirk sometime in 1994. If anyone has any information regarding the whereabouts then please send it to: Old Pink, Care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont Oh yes, it was a brown one if that helps
16. I've been in and out of thread a few times today not knowing what to say. I first saw Lemmy in that episode of the Young Ones "Bambi". Since then me and my brother have been to see Motorhead loads of times. We were both sad and disappointed when the last tour was postponed then cancelled but had tickets to next month's show in Glasgow and were looking forward to seeing the big man in action again. It takes a lot to get me going but I'm genuinely upset at this. It was inevitable and we both knew that this was likely to be the last tour but for it to happen so quickly was a complete shock. I shall be wearing my Motorhead wristband at the new year's eve gig and the Star Wars tattoo I had planned for early next year might become a Motorhead one.
17. I bypassed getting the holder for the G30 as I couldn't find the exact one for it. I have mine zip tied to my strap at the bottom part of the unit but velcroed around the top where battery compartment is. You really can't go wrong at £118.
18. Since the day I started playing I've only ever used guitar combos in the house. Means I can play at a reasonable volume without annoying the neighbours. I've been using the same 40w Meridian combo for a good 10 years now. Plenty of volume and doesn't annoy the neighbours but then I only ever play in the house to learn new stuff. It obviously doesn't sound the same as playing through a proper bass amp
19. I like listening to MK. He's not my favourite bass player but he's certainly unique. In no particular order my 2 favourite videos with MK featuring some fingerstyle playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKI8pFqWm0s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECqW4pt6-JQ
20. I guess I'm not a well rounded player despite playing a wide variety of styles for the past 30 years in dozens of bands
21.
For those not familar with the tune, here's 'Teen Town', live ... Quite good, as noodling goes, and it gets better as it progresses right up to a blistering climax. Hot stuff, from all of 'em ...
I'm sorry but I could pull a better song out of my a$$. I'd rather listen to paint drying
22. So to summarise the view and opinions expressed on here: Jaco is universally acclaimed and was an credible bass player with incredible technique but leaves a lot of people "cold" when they listen to his work. This doesn't make sense to me - is this some people's way of saying that they don't like his work without offending the fans? Jaco influenced so many people but I've only seen two names mentioned. I honestly would love to see if any of the players I listen to were influenced by him If you don't like Jaco's playing or criticise it in any way then that's a stoning offence and you should give up playing and become a tegestologist I've tried to listen to JPs work in the past. I really wanted to like it as I had heard nothing but good words but what I heard wasn't pleasant. The live solos I've seen on youtube seem to be a series of random notes and noises. I honestly thought I was watching one of those "shreds" videos. This would be funny if it wasn't so sad. At the end of the day it's only opinion. You can't make someone like something that they don't and getting defensive, borderline aggressive & name calling isn't going to change someone's opinion
23. I went through a bout of bass and amp GAS that lasted about 10 years. In that time I bought and sold £36000 worth of basses and amps on Ebay alone. That doesnt include stuff that I bought or sold on here or Gumtree. Thing is that overall it didn't cost me a penny as I made money on some of my purchases and I sold one thing to buy another. I think I've had about 110 basses, 20 amps, 10 combos and maybe 40 odd cabs.
24. We're getting to the end of our first year together and were lucky enough to get a function gig at a hotel about half an hour away. It's not as much as we would normally go out for on hogmanay but it's still good wedding money and I would rather be out gigging than sitting in the house listening to the bloody Proclaimers and Paolo Nutini. last year was the first time in 20 years that I didn't have a hogmanay gig. I enjoyed spending the time with my wife but the telly is rank and we'll have the full weekend after NYE together
25. I love Adele's voice. It's really unique and really powerful but by christ are her songs depressing. Sing something cheerful FFS. You've got the talent, sing something happy for once Incidentally Adele is one of my top 4 female vocalists of all time along with Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson & Skin
