Mark King Fans. They're a sensitive bunch.
Delberthot replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I like listening to MK. He's not my favourite bass player but he's certainly unique. In no particular order my 2 favourite videos with MK featuring some fingerstyle playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKI8pFqWm0s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECqW4pt6-JQ -
I guess I'm not a well rounded player despite playing a wide variety of styles for the past 30 years in dozens of bands
For those not familar with the tune, here's 'Teen Town', live ... Quite good, as noodling goes, and it gets better as it progresses right up to a blistering climax. Hot stuff, from all of 'em ...
I'm sorry but I could pull a better song out of my a$$. I'd rather listen to paint drying

So to summarise the view and opinions expressed on here: Jaco is universally acclaimed and was an credible bass player with incredible technique but leaves a lot of people "cold" when they listen to his work. This doesn't make sense to me - is this some people's way of saying that they don't like his work without offending the fans? Jaco influenced so many people but I've only seen two names mentioned. I honestly would love to see if any of the players I listen to were influenced by him If you don't like Jaco's playing or criticise it in any way then that's a stoning offence and you should give up playing and become a tegestologist I've tried to listen to JPs work in the past. I really wanted to like it as I had heard nothing but good words but what I heard wasn't pleasant. The live solos I've seen on youtube seem to be a series of random notes and noises. I honestly thought I was watching one of those "shreds" videos. This would be funny if it wasn't so sad. At the end of the day it's only opinion. You can't make someone like something that they don't and getting defensive, borderline aggressive & name calling isn't going to change someone's opinion

I went through a bout of bass and amp GAS that lasted about 10 years. In that time I bought and sold £36000 worth of basses and amps on Ebay alone. That doesnt include stuff that I bought or sold on here or Gumtree. Thing is that overall it didn't cost me a penny as I made money on some of my purchases and I sold one thing to buy another. I think I've had about 110 basses, 20 amps, 10 combos and maybe 40 odd cabs.

We're getting to the end of our first year together and were lucky enough to get a function gig at a hotel about half an hour away. It's not as much as we would normally go out for on hogmanay but it's still good wedding money and I would rather be out gigging than sitting in the house listening to the bloody Proclaimers and Paolo Nutini. last year was the first time in 20 years that I didn't have a hogmanay gig. I enjoyed spending the time with my wife but the telly is rank and we'll have the full weekend after NYE together

I love Adele's voice. It's really unique and really powerful but by christ are her songs depressing. Sing something cheerful FFS. You've got the talent, sing something happy for once Incidentally Adele is one of my top 4 female vocalists of all time along with Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson & Skin

Role of the bass player in a one-guitar band?
Delberthot replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
If all else fails then a 12 string bass is the answer. Seriously though, I bought one to try it out with the rock band I was in at the time which had only one guitarist and ended up using it for the entire gig. The more bands you play in, the more you learn to adapt. Going from one guitar & keyboard to one guitar to 2 guitars and so on present their own challenges but it's up to all of you to provide the solution to make the band sound it's best. Incidentally the guitarist in the rock band is the best guitarist I've ever played with and I'm fortunate enough that he is the gutiarist in my wedding band now -
I would've paid the £90 for tickets but the decent ones for the Hydro, that is the ones where you could actually see Jeff Lynne and not by looking at one of the screens, were £125 That is a silly price IMO. I saw Jerry Lee Lewis supported by Albert Lee and James Burton and they were £90 but I was 3 rows from the front Really disappointed as my brother and I had really wanted to go

I'm all for great drummers but I'm not mad keen on the video that the OP posted. Much rather listen to something like this: But then again Appetite for Destruction is one of my favourites

Buckie - is that where they make Buckfast? Kidding aside, you don't have to go down single track roads and use ferries to get to Buckie. It's pretty easy to get to. My brother's outlaws live just along the road in Portknockie

I've posted this a lot of times but this is what I use. It's a Gator mixer stand. No rumble off the stage (Apart from the fact that it's a Fender Rumble ) , still plenty of bass and I don't need to have it as loud as I would if it was pointed at my ankles

The Hartke LH amps fit in the Gator shallow 2u racks perfectly and those are big amps

Been using them for years. Mainly going between EXL-165s and EXB83s. The EXLs are about as close as I've been able to get a roundwound string to feel like a flatwound. I did briefly change them from the 165-5s to Elixir stainless 45s on the BB1025. A few slides up and down the neck and I thought I had sliced my finger open they are so rough. Plus the tension is a lot higher as well making fretting the notes really difficult. So they're off and back in the packet after one gig never to be used again. As of today I've put on a set of ECB80s Chromes 45, 65, 75, 95 and a 132 B which I had do buy separately as they only do 5 string Chromes in 45s. A lot lighter than I am used to but they feel really nice and I'm looking forward to being able to play a bit closer to the bridge like I used to. The BB425 is fitted with ECB81-5s and is my backup and used for rehearsals.

Fender Rumble 500 V3 - Got One? What's It Like?
Delberthot replied to Norris's topic in Amps and Cabs
It's probably for the same reason I bought combo over the head. The head is coming in at around £380 and for an extra £60-80 you're getting a 2x10" so it just made sense. I've been toying with the idea of adding the 2x10" cab all year but I've never been in a situation where I thought I would benefit from having it -
I think you should play what suits you at the time.
This is what I do. In my last band I only needed a 4 string with a D tuner. In the current band I need a 5 string for certain songs that require a low C or B or where there are runs from the low D that would sound messy on a dropped 4 string. If those songs were dropped from the set then I'd get another 4 string. I'm not going to use a bass with more strings that I need.

Relief and Action height - what do you use?
Delberthot replied to Twigman's topic in General Discussion
I lower the string height until when I am playing normally it doesn't rattle but if I dig in it does. No idea what that translates to in actual distance between strings and frets. -
Been doing it for 21 years now. As all of the above regarding waiting around, getting there early to set up and learning the most appalling first songs if it's a wedding I'd add to that that you need a very understanding partner and be prepared to give up most weekends in your life depending on how busy you are. During the summer I'll regularly play about 3 hours drive away so I'm giving up about 12 hours of my weekend per gig, bearing in mind that this is still technically my hobby and we all have day jobs. I'm still loving it because I'm fortunate that I play with other musicians who are really good at what they do and we all get along so well.

HIpshot Ultralites and a neoprene strap will help with balance

Stainless Elixirs?

The Chinese are scarily good at everything

How about a Fender Rumble 500 combo and matching 2x10"? My previous rig was a Hartke LH1000 and Laney 4x10" & 1x15" cabs and I prefer what I have now in terms of volume, weight and sound
-
I played a 6 for a few years but didn't use the C string too much and ended up back with a 4. In my current band there are songs where I need the low C & B and being in a function band there ain't time to switch basses otherwise I'd love to still be able to play a 4, neck like a pencil compared to anything else.

What an amazing bass solo ... or maybe not
Delberthot replied to A.G.E.N.T.E.'s topic in General Discussion
I honestly thought I was watching one of these videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOF1FJ7wGhw Bass player at the wrong gig? - more like musician on the wrong instrument - sounded like Sound Control in the early 90s on a Saturday morning
