1. If all else fails then a 12 string bass is the answer. Seriously though, I bought one to try it out with the rock band I was in at the time which had only one guitarist and ended up using it for the entire gig. The more bands you play in, the more you learn to adapt. Going from one guitar & keyboard to one guitar to 2 guitars and so on present their own challenges but it's up to all of you to provide the solution to make the band sound it's best. Incidentally the guitarist in the rock band is the best guitarist I've ever played with and I'm fortunate enough that he is the gutiarist in my wedding band now
2. I would've paid the £90 for tickets but the decent ones for the Hydro, that is the ones where you could actually see Jeff Lynne and not by looking at one of the screens, were £125 That is a silly price IMO. I saw Jerry Lee Lewis supported by Albert Lee and James Burton and they were £90 but I was 3 rows from the front Really disappointed as my brother and I had really wanted to go
3. I'm all for great drummers but I'm not mad keen on the video that the OP posted. Much rather listen to something like this: But then again Appetite for Destruction is one of my favourites
4. Buckie - is that where they make Buckfast? Kidding aside, you don't have to go down single track roads and use ferries to get to Buckie. It's pretty easy to get to. My brother's outlaws live just along the road in Portknockie
5. I've posted this a lot of times but this is what I use. It's a Gator mixer stand. No rumble off the stage (Apart from the fact that it's a Fender Rumble ) , still plenty of bass and I don't need to have it as loud as I would if it was pointed at my ankles
6. The Hartke LH amps fit in the Gator shallow 2u racks perfectly and those are big amps
7. Been using them for years. Mainly going between EXL-165s and EXB83s. The EXLs are about as close as I've been able to get a roundwound string to feel like a flatwound. I did briefly change them from the 165-5s to Elixir stainless 45s on the BB1025. A few slides up and down the neck and I thought I had sliced my finger open they are so rough. Plus the tension is a lot higher as well making fretting the notes really difficult. So they're off and back in the packet after one gig never to be used again. As of today I've put on a set of ECB80s Chromes 45, 65, 75, 95 and a 132 B which I had do buy separately as they only do 5 string Chromes in 45s. A lot lighter than I am used to but they feel really nice and I'm looking forward to being able to play a bit closer to the bridge like I used to. The BB425 is fitted with ECB81-5s and is my backup and used for rehearsals.
8. It's probably for the same reason I bought combo over the head. The head is coming in at around £380 and for an extra £60-80 you're getting a 2x10" so it just made sense. I've been toying with the idea of adding the 2x10" cab all year but I've never been in a situation where I thought I would benefit from having it
9.
I think you should play what suits you at the time.
This is what I do. In my last band I only needed a 4 string with a D tuner. In the current band I need a 5 string for certain songs that require a low C or B or where there are runs from the low D that would sound messy on a dropped 4 string. If those songs were dropped from the set then I'd get another 4 string. I'm not going to use a bass with more strings that I need.
10. I lower the string height until when I am playing normally it doesn't rattle but if I dig in it does. No idea what that translates to in actual distance between strings and frets.
11. Been doing it for 21 years now. As all of the above regarding waiting around, getting there early to set up and learning the most appalling first songs if it's a wedding I'd add to that that you need a very understanding partner and be prepared to give up most weekends in your life depending on how busy you are. During the summer I'll regularly play about 3 hours drive away so I'm giving up about 12 hours of my weekend per gig, bearing in mind that this is still technically my hobby and we all have day jobs. I'm still loving it because I'm fortunate that I play with other musicians who are really good at what they do and we all get along so well.
12. HIpshot Ultralites and a neoprene strap will help with balance
13. Stainless Elixirs?
14. The Chinese are scarily good at everything
15. How about a Fender Rumble 500 combo and matching 2x10"? My previous rig was a Hartke LH1000 and Laney 4x10" & 1x15" cabs and I prefer what I have now in terms of volume, weight and sound
16. I played a 6 for a few years but didn't use the C string too much and ended up back with a 4. In my current band there are songs where I need the low C & B and being in a function band there ain't time to switch basses otherwise I'd love to still be able to play a 4, neck like a pencil compared to anything else.
17. Pretty sure I've had this off and on since yon time
18. I honestly thought I was watching one of these videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOF1FJ7wGhw Bass player at the wrong gig? - more like musician on the wrong instrument - sounded like Sound Control in the early 90s on a Saturday morning
19. I've been using my 500 V5 since the beginning of the year for wedding gigs so it's on for 4-5 hours at a time and for rehearsals. Absolutely love it still - it's a perfect match for my Yamahas. I bought a Roqsolid cover for mine the day I got it so it still looks brand new. If you do decide to sell then I'd be interested in your 2x10" cab
20. Three things will help you - a good wide neoprene strap as mentioned above, Hipshot Ultralites and move about as much as you can. This is what I do as moving about moves the weight of the bass around and I can play a lot longer before I notice any pain or discomfort
21. Never seen one in that colour combination before - really stunning
22. I had a Trace 1110 4x10" combo that had an external power amp in but I think it was done at the Trace factory. I expect that it would come in handy if you used a combo (like I do) and the head failed - if you carry a spare head then it means just plugging it in rather than having to carry a second rig
23. Someone is going to get a free year's supply - surely that's only going to be one set if they're as good as they say they are? I have a set of the stainless ones and I'm waiting for the D'addarios to go dead before I replace fit them. Looking forward to seeing how long I get out of a set
24.
(ps, any tips for curing this GAS would be appreciated)
Just try lifting one on your own, especially anything involving stairs - worked for me
25. William Shatner eh? It is a great song but has to be considered a tad novelty And who could forget - (NSWF ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXtx6N3ww7Y I drew the line at posting the adult version of Agadoo from the Blue Album And anything by The Proclaimers, Paulo Nuttini and most of the UK pop charts for the last 10 years
