1. I've been contemplating selling the BB1025 and possibly the BB425 after it but I went through phases of buying and selling and buying the same again so I don't want to make the same mistake again. I spent a long time deciding on the BB1025 but since I got the Stingray I haven't used it live, in fact it's only been out of the bag once and that was to take the Chromes off and put them on the Stingray. I don't need the Yamaha, I don't need the money and I don't need to free up space but I feel that if I don't use it then there's no point in having such a great bass as a backup that may never get used. I can see me renewing my sellers subscription on here before long if I can't make up my mind one way or the other and let fate (or another member looking for one) decide.
2.
My Fender Rumble v3 500 combo lasted less than 3 minutes at bedroom volume before it packed up working. It was straight back to GAK for a refund. Put me off them forever. I've a secondhand Orange Terror Bass 500 and cab now and couldn't be happier.
Not to jump to Fender's defence but they must have shifted many thousands of these by now and at one point were out of stock everywhere. They are cheap for what they are and it's only inevitable that some of them will fail. I was one of many who had a failed Ampeg PF500 but many are still gigging theirs very happily and there are others who have had failed Terror Bass amps. I also agree that it's a completely different sound to a big manly rock rig. Prior to owning mine I had a Hartke LH1000 and Laney NX115 & NX410 and the sound was very grindy, loud and deep. I have no doubt that the combo couldn't keep up with the big rig but it's a fraction of the size with a fraction of the speakers and many other things that couldn't be further from one another but on it's own it's loud enough for everything I do and sounds incredible with the Stingray & Yamaha. If I played in a rock band I'd get the matching 2x10" cab but I don't need it. I'd describe the sound as tight, focussed and punchy but plug a different bass in and adjust a few controls and someone else could get flabby, indistinct and wooly. It also depends on what you're used to and if you're the kind of person who buys a new amp only to try to make it sound like your old one and are disappointed when it sounds nothing like the old one. It happens with amps and basses - I'm sure we're all guilty of it and one time or another
3. Sorry, I only just saw the two posts regarding my stand. It's one of these I have a strap that goes round the whole combo and stand as it doesn't look steady but it's never moved since I got it just over a year ago. It folds flat and can go quite high. I have mine at it's highest setting so that it's closest to ear level. I've also thought about an extension cab but haven't been in a situation where I needed it. When used as a monitor I have the input gain at 3 and the output at 3 - it's that loud. I had thought about getting a Rumble 200 for smaller gigs as I have trouble getting this quiet enough sometimes while still sounding good
4. Almost anything these days is good enough to learn on as long as it's comfortable and can be adjusted to suit My first bass (also at 12) was a Marlin Slammer complete with peeling chrome on the bridge and I plugged into a Squier 15w guitar combo via a yellow curly cable
5. ZZ Top at the Academy in Birmigham in June. I really need to get out to see someone else before then though
6. Another vote for the Rumble 500 combo. Been using mine for the last year and it's been fantastic. I have also used the GK MB combos with 2x10" cab but they felt a bit fragile to me and sold them quite quickly
7. I've been using mine for just over the last year now and have considered buying the 200w version as some smaller gigs I struggle to get the volume low enough while still getting a good sound, that's how loud they are. I have the input gain at 2 and the main volume at 3.5 and that's also with all of the EQ set at it's lowest point and then turning up from there to suit the room. I thought it sounded good with my Yamaha BB1025 but with the Stingray it's absolutely incredible.
8. I thought the first one was fantastic the way all the different managers operated, especially Peter Grant. I watched the second one last night which was also pretty good but it confirmed to me that I really don't like any of Mark Ronson's work. Also, this is the first time I have heard him speak - has he had a stroke in the past? I thought the Heroes bit was really good. I thought the bass sound was fantastic and not what I expected then it was covered in all sorts of weird noises that sounded mostly terrible on their own but put them all together and it sounds amazing.
9. I use the least amount of strings I can get away with in whatever band I'm playing in at the time. This is currently 5 but up until this time last year it was a 4 for a few years. In the past my main bass has had 4, 5, 6, 8 or 12 strings depending on the band.
10. Last gig I went to was Duran Duran. Absolutely fantastic. Supported by Seal who should've been headlining himself. He too was top class. Some turn to drugs, some to drink - Seal has obviously been in the gym for the last 20 years. Fantastic band he had as well. Next gig should've been Motorhead tomorrow night But, I am going to see ZZ Top at the Academy in Birmingham in June. One of the last of the bands I have on my bucket list still to see. It's a 5 hour drive each way but I didn't think I'd get the chance to see them and I likely never will again.
11.
The problem IMO with all the people mentioned as the new inspirations for bass players is that they seem to have zero impact beyond the world of other bass players. Coupled with the fact that the majority of their music has all the style and class of elevator muzak or a second rate porno movie soundtrack, it's little wonder that their audience is entirely composed of other musicians as the technical playing aspect is the only thing of value.
Big Red X - straight to the point as usual but my thoughts exactly. They say that the only people who find body builders attractive are other body builders. This is what I wanted to say in my own post.
12. My FSR Precision had a faulty preamp so I went the full monty and got the EMG pickups and 3 band EQ. Through a big rig like the hartke LH1000, Laney 115 & 410 it was thunderous and not remotely sterile like people say they can be. Lots of dirt
13. I love this song. I usually use it when sound checking but then again I love octaves. Anything with octaves is good for me whether it be the simplest Roger Waters bass line or the most difficult Bernard Edwards one. I learnt to play octaves from a combination of the Dark Side of the Moon and Nathan East's instructional video back when he had a beard and hair
14. The 1975 sound a bit like Walk The Moon to me. I don't think they have much to offer other than nostalgia but then I can be very critical. I love Peter Gabriel's music. Some of my favourites are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0GcqYGv1AA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1bMpke0yVs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY42nrt_nIc
15. I still keep expecting Lem to say something. He was such a big part of my life I remember depping with a wedding band and the main man told me that I played just like a rock bass player. Being a funk player I was disdturbed. I tried to Play Kiled By Death the entire night
16. I would like to put a fresh set of eyes on this and say that I don't think that any one of these people mentioned will be the next generation of favourite bass players. I remember buying bass player magazine in the 90s and seeing Victor Wooten and BIlly Sheehan on every second advert - they have never inspired me to play differently I always remember a big advert with a guy with a bunch of basses - it was Michael Anthony from Van Halen. I like his singing, he played a Musicman Sterling and some Yamaha basses My favourite songs were those that were in the charts when I was first starting out but listening to the charts now there's no discernable bass.. It's all been muffled into background noise so that we can hear the autotune. I ended up listening to tunes that were out in the 70s & 80s and that's never really changed much as there's not been much IMO to trump it. I regard 1993 as one of the best years for pop music where we had Lenny Kravitz "Are You Gonna Go My Way", Peter Gabriel "Steam", Duran Duran "Ordinary World, Faith No More "I'm Easy", Charles & Eddie "Would I lie To You" and more: Check it out here Check it out, there was some diabolical dirge but even the worst song there was better than most of what we have had this century so far. Sax is just a rehashed Lionel Ritchie song and Hello by Adele is just plain miserable. it's actually depressing and I think that Flea, love him or hate him, will be the most popular bass player for a while to come as he's been the most commercially available bass player. Ask anyone outside of this forum and they will have a hard time telling you who Jaco Pastorius, Larry Graham, James Jamerson, Hadien Something, even Billy Gould are unless you are really into a type of music or a specific band. Long gone are the times when bands were encouraged to flourish and develop their song writing capabilites. It's now or nothing and if you're not on the strictly X-factor on ice big brother in the jungle "I'm not a celebrity" bandwagon then you're not going to be remembered for anything. Welcome to the 21st century where everything is disposable. Celebrity means that you know someone famous or have been on another TV program not having done anyting to warrant being famous yourself. It's all over folks so enjoy being in your post apocalyptical shoegazy punk melancholy fusion freeform jazz rock pop ensemble while it lasts
17. The last string I snapped was a B on Warwick Thumb 5 in 2008 because it wasn't tapered. Quick check with the Bass Centre and I had a tapered Elites 135 guage string on its way. Before that it must have been about 1998
18. Just avoid those trolleys where the wheels fold up as they have a tendency to do so while you're moving them and it all goes wrong at this point
19. Playing in a wedding/function band my main bass is a Musicman Stingray 5 string with a Yamaha BB1025 being my backup. I also have a Yamaha BB425 to practice in the house with and a Lindo 4 string fretless to remind me why I never want to buy an expensive fretless to gig with ever again
20. Bought Andy's SR5 over the holidays. Everything went incredibly smoothly and I received it very quickly and exactly as described. Top banana
21. I played for years in a band with a drummer that could not control his volume and tended to overplay all of the time so I began wearing ear plugs to every gig as having a large china symbal battered right next to my left ear wasn't my idea of fun or going home with ringing in my ears. Thankfully I am now in the position of playing with a drummer who can control her volume and now only wear one ear plug in my left ear not fully in to slightly attenuate the high frequencies from the symbals. I am now enjoying things more and not having to crank the top end to hear myself clearly with the ear plugs in and the stage volume is at a sensible level now that we can all turn back down again. I actually have the opposite problem to most of having a fantastic guitarist right next to me who plays too quietly and it's only when he kicks in the boost for solos that I can hear him properly.
22. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOs4vsthLD0 I lost my train of thought earlier today and, em, something, help?
23. I've found that this is the case with a number of tutors. I've been trying to find a decent vocal teacher but no one has got back to me. I have absolutely no idea how I know what I do or how to transfer it to someone else or I would've gone down that path years ago as I am completely self taught and just played along to everything when I was young. There are no decent bass teachers in my area that I know of that aren't just guitarists who think that bass is an easy version of guitar and therefore easy to teach.
24. 10 years ago I began the revolving door of basses. In the beginning was a 2000 Musicman Stingray 5 followed by about 120 other basses - Fenders,. Warwicks, Modulus, Aria, Yamaha, Ibanez, Rickenbacker, Warmoth, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 12 strings, fretless, fretted, acoustic, semi acoustic, and so on. Some were sold before they were gigged, some were sold before I got them and some made a gig or 2. Some of the more expensive ones were the most disapppointing. At one point I was taking 2 basses worth £4000+ to pub gigs. Last night I played the 2002 Stingray 5 I bought from Andy Dye at a Hogmanay gig and I felt like I was home again. My mate Mick the guitarist kept turning round all night. He told me at the end of the night it was because it sounded so good.
25. Those look like the same tuners that my MIM Seafoam Green Precision had
