1. I've got 7 gigs and maybe 5 rehearsals out of a set of EXLs and the E string especially is as dead as the thumpiest of flats. I thought it was more than that. I've just put a set on my BB1025 but might give the EXPs a go next time around.
2. Don't spend too much cos if it isn't a success then you'll be Up The Khyber unless you can get a gig at the Grand Vizier's Garden Party. If you do then you might get to do a quick Spanish Piece at the Ibiza Bar
3. If you're stuck for transport I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like but One Slip and you'll end up Raving & Drooling until you end up with Nothing
4. only ever had a problem with a Thumb NT5 in that the tuner is incredibly close to the nut so I had to get an Elites B String that tapered as soon as it went over the nut
5. I once received a 1976 Rickenbacker 4001 in a cheap flimsy gig bag with a burst zip and some brown tape wrapped around the bag once. the bass was in perfect condition when it arrived. I have no idea how the courier thought that it was acceptable to take it like that.
6. I concur. I normally don't like black basses as I find it a very boring colour but that is incredible
7. I put 1/4 pounders in my SQ when I had it as I didn't like the stock pickups and I was playing in a Black Sabbath tribute band at the time
8. I bought a 5 string for one song - Get Lucky Yes it sounds silly but every time I heard it I heard that low B being played by my favourite bass player Nathan East I just had to have one since we would be playing it with the band. Since I bought it I've found so many different ways in which it helps me to play the set with the wedding band and actually few of them involve going below the 3rd fret of the B string which was where the D tuner on the Precision took me. I had played for about 20 years between 5s and 6s before going back to a 4 string, including several years incorporating fretless, acoustic, semi acoustic, 8s and 12ers. But if you're not needing the fifth string or don't find that you wish you could play certain patterns without moving too much then stick with the 4
9. The bass I could not be without would be the one that I am currently using and I don't mean the Yamaha BB1025, literally whatever bass I am using at the time. I've had well over 100 and used to buy and sell just cos I fancied changing and trying something else. I happened to need a 5 string with the current band so bought a nice cheap Yamaha BB425 but it was so good it became my main instrument to the extent that I bought a BB1025. I won't get to use it until next weekend though which is a pain but it means that I have time to modify my Boss AB-2 to run on mains power so that I can pick up the BB425 in an emergency
10. BIN is £589 Granted there will be shipping and customs charges but still. I've never understood why G&L basses are so much cheaper than Musicman ones, to me they are an evolution of the Stingray and I prefer the sound of them.
11. I learnt octaves very early on from believe it or not Roger Waters. A lot of Pink Floyd stuff uses octaves, nothing difficult but it gets you used to playing them. From then I got into Nathan East through his stint with Eric Clapton and started learning all of the disco stuff to the extent that I'll sometimes invert the pattern. Anyway for me it's most stuff by Nat King Cole and the likes. The chord progressions and basslines tend to be unexpected to what you'd think that they should be, yet they sound dead easy when you first listen to them
12.
They've been on sale a while I think, I paid 250 for my 425 from GAK a few months ago :-)
I got mine for that as well at the end of last year from GAK
13.
Nope doesn't have to be new at all - more than happy to go second hand if it gets me something better! Looked at the fender rumble - would even a 15 be decent enough? In unlikely to ever be outside of the house playing, so want something that I can crank up to get the best out of!
The Rumbles are loud for their size. I use a 40w Meridian guitar amp at home. It's more than loud enough and doesn't produce so much bass that it's going to annoy the neighbours. In fact it's more volume than I need. I've never felt the need to buy a bass amp for the house
14. Early on Guy Pratt used Status & Spector basses - how about a Washburn Status? That would be within the budget
15. When I bought mine every store I checked out didn't have any in stock but I just so happened to order mine as they were coming back in so they must be very popular and selling a large number of units. So far I think there's been 3 members had problems with theirs. I don't think that's too bad considering how many they are making so I wouldn't be too worried about reliability unless more and more start failing like the Ampeg PF500s did (mine included) When you consider the price that they are selling as well, how good are components really going to be? TIme will tell. Mine has done 13 gigs so far but I always carry my DI box just in case, always have done.
16. Price now lowered to £175 collected or best offer. Postage is coming in at around £20 for mainland UK and £35ish for Europe
17. Well there you go. I've never liked jazzes and I've just proven how little I actually know about them I am about 99% sure that Warmoth used to offer the option of the other position (70s?) as an extra cost option but they don't seem to any more
18. Must have used the predictive text to type the title. It should have said "Left Handed SHOCKING bass guitar custom made"
19.
I've used their cabs (4x10 and 1x15) with my usual rig (Peavey Classic 400, couple of overdrives, stainless steel strings). They sounded full and plenty loud, but compared to my Markbass they were way too harsh and brittle at the top end for my liking. I normally have the tweeter full on and even after switching it off it was really harsh! Very good cabs and very efficient though, and they look good on a stage! If you like that kind of sound you should be plenty happy though
Maybe the amp not suiting the cabs? I never thought that the cabs were harsh in the top end. I had used the 4x10" with an Ampeg PF500 and it sounded terrible. Couldn't get enough of anything to make it sound decent but with the Hartke LH1000 and GK 1001RB II they were fantastic
20. I've had a 4x10 and 1x15 (I have the 15" for sale now) I used mine with a Hartke head and they were amazing. Really punchy, lots of trouser flapping bass but at the same time really clear. I just don't need that much gear any more of I'd still have it. I think several members have used the fet and valve heads but I can't remember who The trouble is that it's not the flavour of the month stuff and never has been but it is really well put together solid gear made from top notch components (Celestion Neos in the cabs and marine grade plywood construction)
21. According to the site 3 3/4" inches from the bridge
22. I really do think that some people don't listen to the lyrics when choosing songs for their wedding. A couple we've had as first dances have been: Always, Bon Jovi - a song about a guy who had a fling with another woman and is singing about the girl he used to be with but will never be with again Without You, Nillson - the first line is the girl leaving him forever The first song for tonight's wedding is Rule The World by Take That but what's the second song? Mr Brightside
23. I decided to go for it in the end. I will get it on Monday. Without asking for anything I've been sent a Leathergraft strap, 3m cable and a set of D'addario EXLs. I'll be sure that if I decide at a later date to go for the BB2025 to speak to the same guy who's been sorting me out with this one.
24. Some better pics Feel free to make me an offer or a trade. I've also put this on Egay and Bumtree
