flat strings and precision not sounding right.
Delberthot replied to red rooster's topic in General Discussion
I've recently found that my Precision with PJ EMGs and Chromes sounds really punchy through a Hartke LH1000 and Laney cabs but decidedly dull through my Fender Rumble 500 Combo. There was just something missing -
Personally I would say that the BB424/5 = MIM standard quality at minimum. I certainly can't fault mine in any way and it's replaced my MIM Fender FSR Precision Special in the wedding band. I haven't tried a BB1024/5 so can't comment on that but I'd expect it to be very good. Looking at these models, there doesn't seem to be very many places with them in stock.

James - Sit Down and Laid. Same from start to finish Waterboys - you saw the whole of the moon - who cares? Those bad 80's style songs that appear from time to time like We are Young by Fun. Belong in the same bin as St Elmos Fire and Nothings Gonna Stop us Now. That style of music that shouldn't exist or at least should've died out a long time ago - Valerie by Amy Winehouse, Imelda May and others. Kind of pseudo 60s motown but pish. MICHAEL BUBLE - aboslutely nothing special about him other than he can sing in tune. Gives me the dry boak every time I hear his sickly voice. Could be any singer out of a boy band.

Advice needed on how to power a Trace Elliot BFC please
Delberthot replied to Urban Lions's topic in Amps and Cabs
I was thinking a Hartke LH1000 would work with this. Run the two 2x10" parts into one side at 2ohms and the 15" into another at 4ohms. Alternatively if you wire it the other way and have the 2 2x10"s running at 8ohms. Assuming it could be rewired to work this way -
Definitely RMS. I think it's only Behringer and low end car audio manufacturers that advertise output in PMPO or peak as in - what wattage it will take as it melts.

I have a 425 and love it. I'm considering a 1025 as a 40th birthday present to myself if I still love the 425 as much come August 14th this year. The different body construction, nut made of the same material as the frets and the bar P pickup seem to the be the 3 main differences. I'm guessing that it's the same neck used on the 425 which I find extremely comfortable. If I buy it I will in all probability have the 425 defretted.

I used them on my gold sparkle Warmoth '54 Precision and they suited that bass very well but I was buying them from Thomann when they were £16 a set and not the £40+ they are now. This was only 4-5 years ago so I actually wonder if it was a mistake on the website or if they were actually that cheap then. I only stopped using them after playing a very humid sweaty gig with a brand new set - by the time the gig ended they were dead and the price had shot up to what it is now

What is your standard gigging set up and sound?
Delberthot replied to FuNkShUi's topic in General Discussion
Yamaha BB425 with everything on full into my Korg floor tuner and into the Fender Rumble 500. I couldn't honestly tell you what the controls are set at, I generally only touch the volume. The simplest setup I've ever owned and the perfect sound for my current band. -
I can honestly say that if money was no object - if one of these basses gave me the exact sound I wanted, enabled me to play like on no other bass and felt incredibly comfortable then I still wouldn't buy one unless they made me something that looked a bit more normal and less coffee table. Looking at all of the bass players that I've listed to over the years there is no one that I am aware of that plays one. I know Anthony Jackson and Victor Wooton play them but I'm not into their style of music - Maybe AJs work with other artists that I'm unaware of but I can't say I've ever consciously listened to a song and thought "that's a Fodera" That's why I can't work out why they are so expensive because there's no one huge that I listen to that plays one. Wal on the other hand is a bass played by a number of bass players I am aware of and given they're relative scarcity, electronics and the fact that they were briefly not being made - I can understand the fuss, plus I love the sound but lack the cash.
I cannot find the article I read only yesterday from a studio sound engineer going all scientific on me and saying special kit was needed etc etc, but I did read it, honest. :-) My question really arose out of the fact some of the sellers on here appear to be going back to 4s as they are struggling. My only complaint with mine is the low tension strings so I may put flat wounds on it. I am used to those on my P bass, my main player at the moment.
I use D'addario Chromes on my Precision - 40-100 gauge but I wanted rounds on my 5 string so I looked up the tensions of each gauge and found that the EXL165-5 string set was the closest and it enabled me to drop the string height significantly - they're 45,65,85,105,135 and feel exactly the same tension wise as the Chromes
The only 5er I heard live that sounded any good was a 5 string Fender Jazz. Mind you, the chap doing the mix was a professor of acoustic engineering. Not knocking 5ers, but.......not for me.

The two 5 string Fenders I've owned were probably the worst 5 string basses I've played , everyone's different though.
The worst 5 string sound I ever heard live was a guy using a Jazz bass and it put me off buying another 5 string for a long time
I'm just curious about what other players like. I'm not really after advice about which to buy; I think they are all probably good basses in their own way and i will be trying all three out, plus any others which are suggested. I actually play in a few different bands, so could use each of them in at least one!
If you're looking for other suggestions then give a Yamaha BB series bass a try. I was very very surprised how good they were. I'm using a BB425 which is cheap as chips and am amazed at how good it is, not just for the money, it's just good. If I'm still of this opinion in a few months time then I'll be considering the BB1025.

I bought my first 5 string about 20 years ago after watching Nathan East playing a Yamaha TRB6 and making it look so easy. After a trip up to a 6 string I went back to a 4 string and used a 4 string exclusively for about the last 7-8 years until I bought my Yamaha BB425 at the beginning of the year. Personally I think a lot of it depends on what you play. The 4 with a D-tuner was all I needed at the time but I now need a 5. I don't see myself ever needing a 6 but I don't think I ever did. I may go back to a 4 in the future if my band changes, who knows? I think what I'm trying to say is that things change and you may no longer need what you used to have. I remember seeing Guy Pratt playing a Status 5 string with Pink Floyd but nowadays I've mainly seen him either playing his Burgundy Jazz, a Precision of some description or his Status thingy that he helped design.

I have a Rumble 500 and it feels as sturdy as any other combo I've had. I understand about bracing and lining the cab but I can't see how it would make it sound any better than it already is - I'm very happy with the sound of mine and wouldn't want to alter anything that would make it sound different. If you price match against some of the European websites you could have a new one for around £410 at the current exchange rates.

I had one of the MB combos and I've had several 700RB, a 1001RB and an 800RB. I couldn't get the GK growl from the MB but it may well have been due to the speakers. I also couldn't get it from the 1001 as I wasn't able to turn it up enough at a gig to get it. My favourite by a mile was the 700RB II

Fender Rumble 500 V3 - Got One? What's It Like?
Delberthot replied to Norris's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've had mine 3 months now. The first thing that struck me was how something so light and small can be so loud I'm using mine in a wedding/function band as my own monitor and have it sitting on one of these so it's at ear level. I find it very much a set and forget amp and I'm amazed at how quickly I found a great sound. I haven't bothered with the distortion or the other buttons, I only need a clean sound. As I mentioned on another thread here, go to a website like this to get a really good price, especially with the current exchange rate, then email GAK and they will price match it. For a cover go to Roqsolid. I had to submit measurements for this combo as the ones they had been given previously were a wee bit out but now they're spot on. -
When I returned my Midnight Blue Rickenbacker 4003 with the infamous runny paint that turned the binding pale blue to the Glasgow shop, they refunded me straight away. I would've taken another but they didn't have any more in store at the time.

A bit like 99% of the videos on Youtube of people playing along to songs - pure showboating, showing off and nothing like the record. The other 1% are people actually playing what was on the record An example of the 1% would be this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QCJAvmJITc Which I am playing tonight thanks to this guy

Carting one cab will be easier than two as you only have one trip to the car but to put things into perspective that cab weighs about 12 1/2 stone or 78kgs. Try lifting one of your mates out of the house and into the car and it'll give you an idea of the weight. I bought an Ashdown MAG810 on Ebay brand new cos it was cheap and I'd always wanted one. It comes in 11kgs less than the Mesa at 67kgs. I lifted it twice, once into the house when it was delivered and once out of the house when I sold it. Never again. I used to use 2 4x10" at about 35kgs each and previous to that used 2 trace V-type cabs, a 4x12" and a 2x15" which were 46kgs each and they were a breeze by comparison - overkill though

Yamaha BB series - talk me through them please!
Delberthot replied to Paul S's topic in Bass Guitars
I bought my BB425 just before Christmas and it has done all but one gig this year effectively temporarily retiring my green Precision Special FSR for the foreseeable. I bought it as a stepping stone to getting back into playing 5 string again but to be honest I love the bass and the way it sounds and I'm now wondering if I need to go any further up the price list at all or stick with what I have. I couldn't get a decent action with the factory D'addario strings so I bought a set of D'addario EXL165-5 as they are roughly the same tension ( excluding the B ) as the Chromes I like on the Precision. Once fitted and allowed to settle I think I managed to drop the string height by 3-4mm on some strings. The 135 B was so thick that when I strung it through the body it wouldn't sit on the saddle when tuned to pitch so I fed it through the bridge and it's fine there. I have always wanted a BB5000 since I was a boy and with my 40th looming I think it's a contender for a present but I like my basses to look pristine but I can't see me finding one in mint condition. Are the pickups as powerful on the BB5000 as they are on the BB425 or would I have to go for the BB5000a? I think the BB-NE2 might be out of my price range, much as I love Nathan East's playing and his sound -
Neck depth is important for me rather than the width. Bought a G&L from Thomann that I simply could not play as the neck felt as if it was as deep as it was wide Slim C, Vintage C and so on mean nothing to me other than I'd guess the latter to be deeper

If you're recording then you may need a few different ones for certain sounds but live I think it all gets lost to an extent. But then think about the number of arguments there have been about what bass Geddy played on what songs recorded Unless you're in a Paul Young or Weather Report tribute band I don't think many punters would hear the difference between fretted, fretless, active, passive etc. I've lost count the number of big gigs I've been to where the bass player could've been playing anything. The answer for me has always been 1 but I've mainly played wedding/corporate/function stuff and there is very rarely the chance to check the tuning between songs never mind change basses I've just temporarily retired my Precision as I need the 5 string for the new band. I won't sell it but it's there for the next time I need it. I spent far too much time and money getting it as close to perfection as I want it just to sell it on.
